Set in the early 1980s, Atmosphere follows Joan Goodwin, an ambitious astrophysicist training to become an astronaut. As she navigates the pressures of NASA’s male-dominated world, she also cares for her young niece and grapples with a growing connection to fellow trainee Vanessa Ford —an emotional shift that challenges both her personal boundaries and societal expectations.

The novel blends science, love, and identity with Reid’s trademark emotional depth. The NASA setting is well realised, and Joan’s quiet resilience makes her easy to root for. The romance is subtle but affecting, and the slow-burning tension — both in space and on the ground — builds to a powerful conclusion.

At times, the pacing lags, particularly in the early chapters, and some characters feel a bit too polished. The climax, while moving, is slightly predictable. Still, Atmosphere is a tender, thoughtful novel about ambition, belonging, and the quiet courage it takes to be fully seen.
