The recent Nightwing run by Tom Taylor is my favorite run of Nightwing ever if you want to try out a former Robin. Chuck Dixon's long run is good too.

As far as Batman goes, I liked the recent Tom King iteration. Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason over on Batman and Robin. Grant Morrison's run is really good but it does delve into some obscure Batman characters. Of course, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's New 52 era run is excellent and introduces the Court of Owls. All of the Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale stuff is very good with a retro feel to it. Batman: Year One by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli is kind of a must read along with The Dark Knight Returns also by Miller. Those are off the top of my head. Feel free to ask questions. I've read most Batman comics published since at least the 80s.

Between Absolute Batman by Scott Snyder and the new mainline Batman run by Matt Fraction, you can get two different—almost opposite—versions of the same character, see which one you resonate with, and go from there.
