Due to the Perry Mason buddy read and people mentioning their parents watching the older show, this got me thinking. Have you ever loved a movie or show, not knowing it was also a book until some point, then read the book when you found out? (I did this with Terms of Endearment and the horror movie Monkey Shines, as well as the Mel Gibson starred movie Man without a face.)

What were your thoughts on the comparison once you read the booK?

And as a second part, do you have any favorite movie to book adaptation novels where the movie did actually come first, so they released a book based on the screen play later?

Pari Seeley | 17 comments Jaws comes to mind. Surprisingly I enjoyed the movie far more. Same with Psycho.
Also The Godfather. But I would say the book was just as good in that case.

Vicki Willis | 555 comments I would have to agree and say Jaws. I was very young when I saw it and wasn't reading adult novels, so I didn't know it was a book. I never did read the book though. I think it would be too dated for me.
No others are popping into my mind right now.

Ann A (readerann) | 908 comments My husband loves to watch British murder mysteries, and I've come to realize almost all of them are from book series. Now, I enjoy reading one then watching the TV show adaptation. Most of them are very well done.

Inspector Morse, Endeavor, Lewis, Inspector Lynley, Vera Stanhope, Shetland, etc. (in addition to a bunch of newer ones).

I had that happen with Broadchurch! Watched the show and found out it was also a book. Did not enjoy the book as much as the show. I watched two versions, the British and American.

Vavita | 191 comments Same with Jaws! I watched all the movies many times and just found out it was a book a couple of years ago.
I didn’t like the book that much. The movie is just marvelous.

Jana Eichhorn | 314 comments I learned two days ago that the movie Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House was a book too. I bought a used copy and might even dip into it today if the mood strikes.

Jen Scott | 50 comments I saw the movie Stardust having no clue it was a book! Stardust is one of my favorite movies, so I was excited to read the book, only to find out I actually prefer the movie more. :) (It doesn't happen very often!)

Sonya | 33 comments Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter..... I saw it in theaters first and then found it was a book. I appreciate both!
