Description:
The celebrated Assamese novelist Devendranath Acharya’s Jangam is one of the finest treasures of Assamese literature. While working as an engineer, the author studied the historical backdrop of Burma (Myanmar) and Assam during the time of the Second World War, gathering material for this novel amidst his professional duties.
Although it carries a shadow of history, it is the author’s imagination and creative power that breathe life into the work. The novel’s central theme revolves around the struggles for survival of a group of displaced, destitute people who fled war-torn Burma, journeying through difficult terrain toward Assam to save their lives during the Second World War.
Jangam is among the most acclaimed works in Assamese literature. It was first published in 1982 by the Asam Prakashan Parishad. The novel was originally serialized in the Parishad’s journal Prakash, and later published in book form. It was honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award.
