Do you read more or less when on vacation or when traveling for other, non-vacation reasons? Does it matter what kind of trip it is (flying, train, driving, bus, cruise, etc)?

Dawn (caveatlector) | 363 comments I typically read less on vacation. And I don't travel much for non-vacation reasons.

I don't usually have a lot of time for reading, mostly just the flights or sometimes the subway. On trains and buses I am site seeing. Road trips I'm with someone and doing the driving. Haven't tried a cruise yet. Sometimes when I'm camping, in the evening, I'll listen to a book. Other than that I'm always busy seeing things or eating things, cramming as much as possible into every day, because I might not get to visit again.

I did go to Vegas once for a long weekend and spent to whole time reading in the hotel. In retrospect it might have been a bit rude to the friends I was with, but I'm not a gambler or a pool side sitter, so I was kinda bored.

Kateblue | 159 comments I read more on our typical vacation. That's because my idea of a perfect vacation is to sit with my feet up, wearing a big floppy hat, gazing at a largish body of water, and reading my Kindle between gazes.

I generally read a lot on vacation! I definitely read to pass the time on long plane or train rides, though I tend to get a little nauseous if I try to read in the car (but I often get audiobooks for long drives). My preferred vacation type is a mix of sightseeing/outdoor activities and time to relax, and the relaxing time generally involves plenty of books.

I asked this question because I’ve been traveling for 12 days & won’t be home till tomorrow. I read one book in the airports & on our flights going to Europe but didn’t read at all while we were in Europe because I was sightseeing. During the little bits of downtime, I tried to catch up on emails. I read about 80% of Shroud on the flights back to the US. We have one more leg (short hop) & then drive home tomorrow. I don’t listen to audiobooks when I travel with someone else in a car, although I do when I’m alone.

This is my usual pattern when I travel—other than airports & airplanes, I don’t read much at all.

Random (rand0m1s) | 1308 comments Overall, I read less. Mostly because vacations are times for my husband and I to spend together without a bunch of responsibilities hanging over us. We both always intend to read more, it just rarely ends up happening that way.

Choices
1) Read
2) Snuggle
Answer: Snuggle!

For non vacation traveling, or vacation obligation traveling, I also tend to read less as I rarely actually feel comfortable and it makes relaxing difficult. And if I can't relax well, I struggle to concentrate well.

Ken (ogi8745) | 1469 comments It depends where I am
If I am at one of those inclusive resorts or visiting a city I dont read as much. If I go home or visit friends or relatives I will read more.

Bliss!

Cheryl (cherylllr) | 428 comments My travel is a road trip (alone) to visit my mother (for 3-5 weeks). I can no longer drive all day, so I read a lot in the hotel each evening. At Mother's, we're both quiet readers, so I collect lots of books from her library that mine doesn't have.

In the old days when I went on proper vacations with my husband, yes, after the daily excitement, the choice was usually 'snuggle' - !
