Jen K | 3196 comments Carolyn regularly interacts with Americans and loves guacamole but she isn't quite like them either... anymore especially after dying and being resurrected a number of times. When she was a kid, she and her 11 siblings were adopted by Father. Father is the real power in the world beyond any borders and keeps his ancient knowledge in a library. Each of the 12 children were assigned a category to become the expert in that category of knowledge and failure was not an option upon extreme pain and death. But now Father is missing and Carolyn and her siblings are maneuvering to determine what or who comes next starting with control of the library and the world and a plumber named Steve seem to be the collateral.

The world and characters are so creative and quirky. Though brutal at times, I enjoyed that the murderer wore a purple tutu and that Steve was obsessed with animals and Edwin's cleverness. It was fun to try to unravel the puzzle. This isn't a typical fantasy book and I quite enjoyed it.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12815 comments I loved this one, Jen. Read it as a buddy read over at the EF group.
I thought it was "wonderfully weird " and a great break from the regurgitated fantasy these days.

Most times, for me, fantasy is all about the character connection and the world-building. This hit the right notes for me.

Robin P | 6009 comments I hated this book, I guess you aren’t supposed to take the brutality seriously but I couldn’t deal with it

Algernon (Darth Anyan) | 581 comments Not one of my favorites. The first word that comes to mind is clunky, but it did have some better scenes
