There were a couple of characters that I initially took a set against but by the end of the novel they came back into my good graces.
I have just finished, and have upped my rating from 4 to 5. I just think the characterisation in this one is phenomenal. As you say Cphe, the characters become more likeable as we come to understand their motivations better.
I'm surprised that she wasn't more well known.I've come across people on other threads that have heard how good her work was but have never read her.

Me too. That said, there are loads of authors out there that I have heard are good but I still haven't got round to reading them, so I do understand that. I read Jane Austen's Bookshelf: A Rare Book Collector's Quest to Find the Women Writers Who Shaped a Legend recently, and that has a lot aboutvwhy women writers just get written out of history. (Men tend to be the ones that creat the canon, and they are less interested in 'domestic fiction). I do think she is (slowly) being re-discovered, she even has a blue plaque now. I bet that was something only dreamt of when Persephone first started republishing her works.

Just to add, I have heard that there is a biography in the pipeworks. I think it was a thread on here that mentioned it.
Cost of her novels may play a large part as to why she isn't read more - not many available on kindle and they are expensive at least over here..

I would say she is one of my favorite authors! So much insight into human character, and like both of you have said, we get to like the characters better as the novel goes one because of their characterization and humanity.
I haven't read Jane Austen's Bookshelf yet, but it's on my list!
I liked the way the book ended, with the relationship being repaired through his parents (they took the first step anyway). It was unexpected and very sweet!
