For some context Beth’s father died in action in Afghanistan when she was 11, her mom started dating Andrew when Beth was 13 almost 14 and the reason it’s a flashback is because the rest of the book that this scene is going on is set when Beth is 16. Hope that made sense and I hope y’all love it! (Sorry if you’ve seen this before I did write a update about this if it seems familiar that’s why, lol)
Three Years Ago: The First Meeting
I had watched from the stairs as Mom had let her new boyfriend Andrew in the front door, it was going to be my first time meeting him. But he seemed nice enough from what Mom had told me, and she had been happier ever since she started dating him than she’s been since Dad died.
Andrew handed Mom a bouquet of flowers saying, “Here I got you flowers, I was going to get some for Beth as well but I don’t know what kind she likes so I got her some of those chocolates that you mentioned she likes. I hope that’s ok.” He smiled sheepishly, and I could tell why Mom liked him so much.
He brought me chocolate? Ok well maybe he wasn’t all bad, I was still on the fence about him though.
Mom led him into the living and then she walked into the kitchen to put her flowers in a vase. I could see Andrew walking around the living room, looking at our pictures and nic knacks in the shelves and walls, he stopped in front of the shelf where we keep a picture of Dad in his dress uniform and the flag we were given after he died and his dog tags and his Purple Heart.
Andrew stared at the medal in its decorative box before picking it up, and that’s when I decided to finish going down the stairs and meet him.
“Why are you holding my dad’s medal.” I asked as I walked into the living room and Andrew jumped and turned.
“Oh, um, I’m sorry I didn’t know that I wasn’t allowed to touch it. I’ve just never seen a real one before and I’m kind of a military nut and I was just curious…” he trailed off and then something must of clicked because then he said. “Wait your dad? You’re Beth?”
“Yeah that’s me,” I said taking the medal from his hand and putting it gently back on the shelf before turning and holding out my hand, “Bethany Brown, and you must be Andrew my mom’s new boyfriend.”
He took my hand and shook it. “Please call me Andy, the only time I ever go by Andrew is at work and even then most of my coworkers call me by my nickname.”
“Ok, then it’s nice to meet you, Andy.”
“And it’s nice to meet you, Beth. I hope I haven’t made to terrible of a first impression.” He smiled sheepishly again and I laughed.
“Don’t worry, you haven’t.” I told him with a smile as I pulled back my hand. “Now did I hear something about chocolates for me?”
Andy laughed and was about to respond when he got interrupted.
“Beth! That’s rude.” Mom scolded as she walked into the living room from the kitchen.
“It’s fine Becky,” Andy said too her and then he turned back to me, “and yes you did Beth, their still out in my car since I didn’t know if your mom would let me give them to you, but I can go out a grab them if you want.”
I was about to respond when my mom cut me off and shot me a look. “No that’s fine Andy, the chocolates can wait supper is getting cold.”
“Ok then, Beth remind me to give them to you before I leave, ok?” Andy said smiling at both me and my mom. (it was mostly my mom)
I nodded, grinning and followed them into the kitchen. Andy wasn’t bad at all, maybe I could get used to him.
Hope that made sense and I hope y’all love it! (Sorry if you’ve seen this before I did write a update about this if it seems familiar that’s why, lol)
