The Shining - Book #1
The only King book that I have totally loved! Although, I have to say that I didn't find it scary at all! Will join in once you guys start discussing. :)Happy reading and hoping that you will keep the spam to the minimum! :P :)
Poulo, first few pages. Gehna, blame thyself. You tempted me by starting this thread earlier. I wouldn't have remembered otherwise. :P
Smitha- Umm.. I don't remember the page nos. What is happening?Utkarsh- I know I am. :P *ignores the sarcasm*
@poulomi narcissistic :p sarcasm was the whole point of that sentence.I think I will read it, I know Stephen king won't disappoint me.
@Utkarsh... You are NOT starting it today....start it tomorrow with me...please? @Smitha... That's not my fault... Polo asked me to make the thread :'(
Polo, Danny is waiting for his dad to come. Gehna, stopped for today. Shall officially start tomorrow, along with you guys. I have not even entered it in currently reading category. :-)
Abhay -Not my first. First was Dracula -unabridged at the tender age of 13 which gave me many a sleepless night
I avoid horror movies
on a scale of 10 -5 or 6
*blames Polo*Utkarsh, okay.... :P
@Abhay.... I can actually see how I sound while posting discussion points XD
Will answer your questions soon, but after reading my review of I Am Legend, you know most of the answers :P
@Abhay I have read Dracula, but I don't consider it horror.
Not very often, never alone.
It's hard to say, not much afraid of real life stuffs. But horror movies scare me.
@Abhay... Stop these scaring remarks.... If I don't find it scary, you will be the first person to pay for it -_-
@Ab:* Yes it is...that's if you don't count those silly goosebumps books I read in my early teens or uhhhh Jekyll and Hyde
* I've watched the Exorcist, uhhh Grudge???? Omen, bits of Emily rose and the conjuring (stopped before anything happened)...
* On a scale of one to ten? I'd place myself in a range...uhh nine to eleven...with eleven being the spine made of custard and nine the one made of cardboard.
But that's only a weak stomach when it comes to horror...I'm not delicate in most other ways. Quite the opposite, I'm made of broken glass and rusted nails and bits of barbed wire.
Abhay wrote: "@Gehna - All I did was wish goodnight :/ @Zaara : Lol :D Broken glass rusted nails barbed wire?! :D Good to know :P Goosebumps was fun.
BTW did you guys know Shining the novel has a guest appea..."
Why?
Abby - Yahaan bhi shuru?? *shakes head*:P
Though I agree, I'm already laughing my ass off in Friends! :D
This one is dominating listopia in any list that has horror or scary in its name.I'm taking it up as well. Starting on Thursday morning. Will be my first Stephen King.Since I'm home-alone now,I'm craving for some spooky stuff, hope I get satiated :D
@Abhay# I have read a few.And Then There Were None is one of the best that I remember.
# Not regularly, but I do watch.Final Destination series,Exorcist, conjuring are a few favourites.
# There were times I was a ten pointer, now I'd say 2-3.
Abhay wrote: "@Vimal - Cool. Actually And Then There Were None spooked me too, not many would associate it with horror but the sinister happenings on that island did have that effect on me. It was awesome :) H..."
Great :) Yeah,I've heard this is one of King's best, so hoping that I'll enjoy it.I'm tired after 2 tomes in a row, so a fast-moving thriller shouldn't be bad.
Zaara wrote: "Welcome aboard, @Utkarsh, @Thala"Hey Zaara! Have you read King before? I once started with Duma key, but kinda quit after a few pages, dunno why.
Vimal wrote: "Hey Zaara! Have you read King before? I once started with Duma key, but kinda quit after a few pages, dunno why."Only the borderline/non-horror works...green mile, eyes of the dragon, on writing, Shawshank...he's an adept wordsmith...started Carrie but chickened out before things got creepy...hee :-)
Abhay wrote: "@Zaara - U seem to be a serial escapist when it comes to horror. U ain't chickening out of this one, once you're in no way out :P"I promised our very own 'king of the undead' Rex that I will read it THIS year. Calendar not fiscal :-P Then I promised @Smith I'd read it with her.
I'd do good to 'ware those two, don't you think? And now you too...sigh...yes yes Ab, I will toughen up my chicken guts and keep my promises. I usually do.
@Polo, et tu?You and Ab can be the 'contest' judges for this thread...and uhhh don't be too strict, definitely don't be too serious...and DO be gentle with the five of us...and no cheating and declaring Deej king (oops sorry queen) of the hill by default, just cuz she is everyone's favourite ;-) heeeeeee
Utkarsh - Start it at the dead of the night. But the first half is more towards technical details and build up, so that you can read anytime. :)
I want to make it an experiment on myself. Hmmm let's see is Shinning really the scariest book ever ?!
Zaara- *winks*You should thank us for being your inspiration. :P
Now, go start!!
I'm waiting for someone to begin posting their thoughts! -_-

As winter closed in and blizzards cut them off, the hotel seemed to develop a life of its own. It was meant to be empty, but who was the lady in Room 217, and who were the masked guests going up and down in the elevator? And why did the hedges shaped like animals seem so alive?
Somewhere, somehow there was an evil force in the hotel - and that too had begun to shine...
Me, Zaara and Smitha (PSmith) are going to start this book on Thursday, 16th April.... You are most welcomed to BR it with us or discuss it if you have already read it! ^_^
Discussion Points:
Ch 1 to Ch 5 : (view spoiler)[1.When Ullman discusses the problems of the hotel with Jack prior to hiring him, was the scene for the horror filled events that occur later set? What incident was most scary or noteworthy?
2. When Tony is first introduced, what were your impressions about him?
3. Jack's character sketch shapes up in these first chapters. What are your impressions about him? Do you think he will be able to redeem himself for the way he treated Danny and Wendy?
4. What are Danny's major worries? How different is he from a normal 5 year old?
5. What made Jack quit alcohol? Do you think this incident will have impact on his future, and the events that occur at the Overview Hotel later on in the book? (hide spoiler)]
Ch 6 to Ch 10 : (view spoiler)[ 1. Why do you think King chose a phone booth as the setting for a flashback sequence?
2. Any guesses or gut feels about the rider-less bike in the middle of the highway? Do you think it will play a part in later events?
3.What does Chapter 6 tell you about Wendy's character, her marriage to Jack, and her relationship with her mother? Which sentence/scene/facet of a relationship leaped out at you the most and why?
4. We see the drive to the Overlook through Danny's eyes in Chapter 8. Does this choice of narrator/focus of the camera lens add intensity to the scene or detract from it? Was there (and if so) which sentence/scene in chapter was visual enough for you to be able to "see" the family?
5. Why do you think the author chooses to show us a vignette of the last bustling day at the hotel?
6. What do you think about Mr. Halloran? In what way does King show us that Halloran forms a bit of a special bond with Danny? Do you think the parents notice this? (hide spoiler)]
