Jacqueline | 2 comments The book was about two boys, one was a white boy from a settler village and the other is a First Nations boy. There are aspects of racism and the settlers have conflicts with the nearby first nations village (pranks, setting fires), however the two boys become unlikely friends and learn culture and language from each other. He teaches the friend that after someone dies you should look in the sunrise/sunset and when it is red it means the persons soul has moved on to the other side.

There is a disease going around the First Nations community and i think the white boy tries to help his friend? Unfortunately the indigenous boy becomes too sick and he dies and then later the white boy goes and sees one morning that there is a red sunset.

I read this for school in the late 2000s, early 2010s and I remember the ending was very emotional and moving. The book had a reddish cover and I think the title has something to do with a red sunrise or red sunset.

I can't remember if it takes place on the east coast, in Quebec, or in Ontario, but I think there might have been a part about the white boy helping his dad fishing and they go out in a boat, which is why he can't come to help his friend at a challenging part of the book (he is forbidden from seeing the first nations friend).
