20.1 Most Improved Player: Jager’s Task - Reading is a Gift!
Help Thread
I’m so thankful I found this challenge this summer! I jumped in part of the way through that season and it has changed my reading life. In the Fall Challenge I read some fantastic books and, in this season of giving, I want to share that list with you all! This task will be based on my Fall 2025 SRC reads, linked below.
Jager’s Fall 2025 SRC List
Choose an option and read one book for that option.
Required: State the option
Option 1: Read a book that shares a title/subtitle word (4+ letters) with one of the books that I read for the Fall SRC. Words must match exactly.
Required: State the book title used from the list.
Option 2: Read a book by a new-to-you author that wrote one of the books that I read in the Fall SRC. If there are multiple authors, at least one of them must be on my Fall SRC list and new-to-you.
Required: State that the author is new-to-you and state the book title used from the list.
Option 3: I read 64 books in the Fall SRC. Read a book in a series whose number in the series includes a 4 or a 6 (whole numbers only - #4, #6, #14, #26, for example)
Required: Series title and number must be listed on book's main page.
Option 4: I read books with titles that started with all of the letters of the alphabet except J, O, V, X, or Y. Read a book which has a title that starts with one of these five letters. The word must be the first word in the title with the exception of A, An, or The.
20.2 Rookie at the Top: Amanda E's Task - Baby, It’s Cold Outside… Now, Tell Me About Your Mother?
Help Thread
I’m a doctoral student in clinical psychology, and winter is the one time of year my schedule slows down enough for me to actually read things that aren’t academic articles or case notes. But even when I’m relaxing, I still end up analyzing characters the way I analyze my clients — noticing defenses, patterns, attachment styles, and family dynamics even when I’m just trying to enjoy a story.
The winter/holiday season can surface many difficult dynamics and feelings: family stress, old conflicts, nostalgia, avoidance, grief, and the occasional meltdown over untangling lights. So this task brings some attachment-style inspo to your winter reading… in a fun, bookish way.
Choose one option
Required State the option
Attachment Styles: Winter Edition
Attachment theory explains that the emotional bond between a child and their primary caregiver shapes how they form relationships throughout life.
Option 1: Secure Attachment
Someone with a secure attachment style is comfortable with both closeness and independence, trusting others, and communicating needs openly.
1A: A secure person is warm, safe, and dependable
These words represent the emotional tone of secure attachment — stability, reliability, and felt safety.
Read a book with at least one of the following words in the title (ignore subtitles):
Home, Safe, Steady, Trust, Calm, Warm, Hold, Anchor.
Possesives, plurals, and any variation works, as long as it keeps the meaning of the word. IE: Holding, Trusted, Anchors, Warmest
Examples :
The Safest Lies, Snow Place Like Home, Holding Smoke, Blue Is the Warmest Color
1B: Developing a secure attachment style during infancy and childhood is dependent on a secure and safe bond with their primary caregiver. One whom the child can trust will always be there to meet their needs, is consistent, and predictable, while also allowing the child to develop autonomy and independence as they grow up.
Read a book where a parent–child relationship is central and the child moves through at least two different developmental stages
(example: character starts as a child and grows to teen or adult throughout the book). The book can show the age progression or a dual time line of the child's past, as long as the parent-child relationship is essential to the story.
Required: If the relationship is not evident from the book's main page, provide a reference.
Option 2: Anxious Attachment (“Tell me again that everything’s okay”)
Someone with an anxious attachment style worries about being abandoned and seeks a lot of reassurance. Repetition = reassurance.
Read a book with consecutive repeating words in the title.
Examples: Never Never, Gone Gone Gone, You You You
Option 3: Avoidant Attachment (needs space & distance)
Someone with an avoidant attachment style values independence and pulls back from too much closeness.
Read a book where the main setting is a place that is physically isolated.
(e.g., island, cabin, remote town, winter outpost).
Required: If the setting is not evident on the book's main page, provide a reference.
option 4: Disorganized Attachment
Someone with a disorganized attachment style wants closeness but also fears it. Seeking connection but then pulling away once they feel to close - leading to inconsistent and unpredictable behavior (contradictory “push-pull” patterns)
Read a book with a winter-themed cover with a MPGs of Thriller, Crime, Mystery, Horror, Dystopian, Post -Apocalyptic, Gothic, True Crime, or Dark Academia. MPGs may be stand alone or embedded.
A winter-themed cover needs to include snow, ice, or frost.
Examples:
Required: Post the cover.

December holidays include Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa.

February is for Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day.
This is a one-book task. Please pick one of the following holiday-related options:
Required State the option
Option 1: Holiday Cover
Read a book with one of these items on the cover: Christmas tree (decorated or with presents under, not just an evergreen), Santa Claus, Kinara, menorah, dreidel, champagne (in glass or bottle), MLK, a heart, a couple embracing, or a president.
Required: post the cover

20.5: Bigger is Better: Elizabeth P's Task- My Boys
Help Thread
I always enjoy reading everyone’s tasks and reasoning behind the task, and I love how multiple people often come up with similar ideas during the same season, like all the dog-themed challenges this season. So I decided to join in the pet fun, but this will be a task all about my cats!
Choose one option.
Required: State the option.
Option 1: Fred
I adopted Fred and George on December 6th, 2020. They were the first pets for which I have ever been the primary responsible person (unlike our family dogs, who could count on my mom and dad!). Fred’s favorite thing to do is to crawl under the covers with me after he wakes me up in the morning, and meow at me when I fall back asleep and stop petting him. This December celebrates 5 years of early happy mornings.
-Read a book first published in December of 2020-2025, inclusive.
Option 2: George
Unfortunately, George had a lot of medical issues, some that I knew about when I adopted him, and some that I didn’t know. After countless vet visits, a 3 hour drive to the specialty vet, and many “mom stop making me get in that carrier” bites, I had to let George go in May of 2021.
Read a book by an author who is no longer with us.
Required If authors date of death is not on the authors Goodreads page, provide a reference.
Option 3: : Charlie
I adopted Charlie about 4 months after George passed because I thought Fred needed a friend. According to Fred, I was probably wrong. But I can’t imagine home without Charlie, who is simultaneously the most anxious, scared cat who has ever existed and a complete snuggle bug who wants to curl up on my chest and purr. He’ll hide under the couch for 3 months until he decides you’re safe to approach, but then he won’t leave you alone.
-Read a book with a title word of 3+ letters that can be made from SCAREDY CAT or SNUGGLY BOY.
Required: state the phrase and the word.
Option 4: : The Boys
I don’t know if anyone has figured it out yet, but all of my boys are named after characters from Harry Potter - that’s right, the Weasley family! I’ve always wanted to name a pet after all 9 Weasleys, and since Charlie I’ve got 4 down! To further the similarity with the Weasleys, who all have red/orange hair, all three of my boys have been orange cats. They truly are a wild ride.
-Read a book with a single author's first AND/OR last initial is found in THE WEASLEYS, AND has cover contains the color orange according to Tineye https://labs.tineye.com/color/

December holidays include Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa.
January is the month for New Year's Day and Martin Luther King Jr Day.

If you aren’t keen on sharing your location...

Option 3. Read a book with a least one envelope or a greeting card on the cover. This list has some suggested covers :

I don’t know about the rest of you, but one of my favorite things about this time of year is all of the end of year content and stats from the various creators I follow online and apps I use. One such thing is Spotify Wrapped that tells me all of the stats about my music, podcast, and audiobook listening, including a number of Top 5 lists related to my listens. I also love all of the best book lists from the creators I follow on podcasts, YouTube and Instagram. Taking inspiration from these wrap-ups, I’m going to base this task on my Top 5 books (so far) of 2025.
Choose an option and read one book for that option.
Required: State the option
Option 1: Wreck by Catherine Newman
In the follow-up to Newman’s 2024 book Sandwich, we continue to follow Rocky and her family a couple of years later than the events of Sandwich. While Sandwich is set firmly in the summer, Wreck is set in the autumn. It was perfect to pick this one up in November and enjoy the fall vibes.
-For this option, read a book set at least 50% in your current season. Even though it won’t be winter or summer until later in December, we will simplify and require winter for the northern hemisphere and summer for the southern hemisphere.
Required: State which hemisphere you live in and Provide a reference if the season is not obvious from the Goodreads main page
Option 2: The Correspondent by Virginia Evans
In her debut novel, Evans celebrates the connections her protagonist Sybil makes via her years of correspondence. The entire story is told in letters and emails.
-For this option, read an epistolary novel from one of the lists below. These novels will be told through a series of correspondence (letters, emails, text messages, diary entries, interviews, and newspaper clippings)
Epistolary Fiction
Epistolary Novels
Books That Are Told Through Letters or Diaries
Required: State the list and the page.
Option 3: The Road to Tender Hearts by Annie Hartnett
I loved everything about this novel by new-to-me author Annie Hartnett. It follows PJ as he navigates complicated family dynamics and a road trip across the country. It is equal parts ridiculous and tender.
-For this option, read a fiction or non-fiction book with the MPG Road Trip or Travel. MPGs can be standalone or embedded.
Option 4: The River Is Waiting by Wally Lamb
It’s been over 20 years since I read my first Wally Lamb novel, “I Know This Much Is True.” I don’t remember much about that book but have long said it is one of my favorite books of all time. I read it just as I was entering adulthood and have often considered re-reading it now that I have many years of adulting under my belt, but have been too afraid of realizing that it no longer resonates, or was never any good. That is why I was thrilled to pick up this new novel by Wally Lamb on my vacation this summer. I don’t want to say too much about the plot, but it was heartbreaking and beautiful. It definitely is my favorite of the year.
-For this option, read a new-to-you book by an author you’ve read before.
Required: State that the book is new-to-you by a previously read author.
Option 5: A Hodgepodge of Non-Fiction The Barn: The Secret History of a Murder in Mississippi by Wright Thompson, Raising Hare: A Memoir by Chloe Dalton, and Be Ready When the Luck Happens by Ina Garten.
Okay, so maybe this is really a Top 7 list because I couldn’t choose between these non-fiction favorites. I read a lot of really wonderful non-fiction this year. I don’t think I can pick a favorite because these were all so different.
-For this option, read a NON-FICTION book with the MPG Memoir, Crime, Social Justice, Nature, Animals, or Food. MPGs can be standalone or embedded.

25.1 - XBM's Task: An Author in the Family
Help Thread
Two of the books I read for the Fall season were written by daughters whose mothers were also authors. That got me thinking about other families, like mine, with multiple authors in them. For example, there are the Brontes, the Kings, the Walkers and the Wests, to name a few.
This is a two book task.
Read two books, each by individual authors who are related, either husband/wife, parent/child, siblings, grandparent/grandchild, or cousins. For the purposes of this task, two related people writing under one pseudonym CANNOT be used. Books written by more than one related author can be used if they are listed as individual authors, but each book only counts for one author.
Required: State the relationship and provide a reference if it is not obvious from one of the author pages.

or
Cannot be used:

25.2 - Bookwrm562's Task: The Cutting Edge
Help Thread
I am getting incredibly excited about the upcoming Winter Olympics, so I'm designing this task as an homage to figure skating and the CLASSIC movie, The Cutting Edge. I love this movie precisely BECAUSE it's cheesy and unrealistic.
This is a two book task. Choose two of the options below, and read one book for each option.
Required: State the options.
Option 1: Figure skating is my favorite event in the Winter Olympics, though I love them all. For this option, read a book with ice skates or an ice skater on the cover. For the ice skater, enough of the feet must be visible to tell the person is actually skating.
Required: Post the cover
Option 2: There are six common jump types in figure skating, and three of them are called "edge jumps" because you do not use the toe pick in the takeoff. These are the AXEL, the SALCHOW, and the LOOP. For this option, choose one of these edge jumps and read a book where all of the letters in that jump can be found in the title and/or subtitle.
Required: State the jump name
Option 3: One of the best scenes in the movie is a training montage where Kate mercilessly and repeatedly teases Doug with the line "Toe Pick!", because he's a hockey player not a figure skater! For this option, read a book with a single author's first and last initials (middle initials can be ignored) can be found in the phrase TOE PICK. Letters may only be used as often as they appear.
Option 4: The ending of the movie involves a figure skating move that I'm fairly certain is physically impossible under the current laws of physics. However, by this point in the movie I'm so invested I just don't care. For this option, read a book with a word of four or more letters in the title (subtitles excluded) that can be made from the phrase "WE'RE DOING THE PAMCHENKO". Letters may only be used as often as they appear.
Required: State the word
Option 5: The Olympic Games the characters were supposed to be attending was the 1992 games in Albertville, France. For this option, read a book set at least 50% in France.
Required: If the setting is not clear from the Goodreads description, provide a reference.
25.3 - Kmaried's Task: Birthday Celebrations
Help Thread
This is the season where I turn a year older, so my task it going to focus on birthdays.
This is a 2 book task. You can read one book for 2 different options or repeat one of the options.
Required: State the option for each book read.
Option 1: Growing up, a family tradition was that we got to pick what we were having for dinner. Going out to a restaurant was a special treat since we were on a fairly strict budget. On my 16th, I picked Mexican and the waitress asked if I wanted a margarita. I was a little confused because I was obviously underage and, with a family that didn't go out much and didn't really drink alcoholic beverages, I hadn't realized they could make a virgin margarita. My parents encouraged me to try it as a birthday treat and I had my first strawberry margarita.
Read a book with a 4+ word in the title (subtitles excluded) that can be spelled from the letters in MEXICAN STRAWBERRY MARGARITA. Letters may be used as many times as they appear.
Option 2: Cake and ice cream are normal birthday desserts. But due to my dietary restrictions, I typically couldn't eat at other birthday parties. For my own, my favorite was a special homemade orange angel food cake. I could eat the frosting by the spoonful.
Read a book by a single author where the author's first and last initials can be found in ANGEL FOOD CAKE.
Letters may be used as many times as they appear.
Option 3: Who doesn't like getting presents on their birthday? My birthday is a few weeks AFTER Christmas, and far enough that separate presents were never an issue. This year, as I stay with my parents for Thanksgiving, my mother has already wrapped some Christmas presents and tells me one is actually to take home with me for my birthday. I can choose which one to keep for my birthday. She just wants to torture me with a gift that I can't open for a couple of months.
Read a book with a gift on the cover. It must be obvious that it is a gift with a bow, ribbon, gift tag or other decoration.
Required: Post the cover

25.6 - Robin P's Task: Back to the Office
Help Thread
From childhood on, my daughter Leslie's favorite books, movies, and TV shows were always humorous ones, and she took on life as a collection of funny events. So when she was suddenly diagnosed with ovarian cancer just before her 40th birthday, one of the first things she did was write a series of jokes about it. Over the next three years of chemo and other treatments, whenever she was tired or in pain, she would watch her favorite shows - Parks & Rec, Community, and especially the American version of The Office. In fact, the last conversation I had with her before she finally lost her fight was about The Office. The TV was on while she was dozing on the couch. When she awoke, I said I was watching the episode where Michael Scott (the boss) tries to prove he can survive in the wilderness. She smiled and whispered, "Can't" - that is of course Michael won't be able to handle one afternoon in some local woods, and will have to be rescued by his right-hand man Dwight. In honor of the show and my daughter Leslie, here are some options.
Choose 2 different options and read a book for each.
Required: State the options
Option 1: The seasons
The original version of this show was English, starring Ricky Gervais, and also introduced to our family by Leslie. The American version started out as a slavish copy, which wasn't effective. But once the writers began to develop their own style, it really took off. Some people feel that Season 2 was the best.

25.8 - Jecca's Task: To my Bubba
Help Thread
December 1st would have been my husband’s 56th birthday. He passed in March of 2022. He was my best friend, my favorite person, and had the patience of a saint. He was also one of the geekiest people I have ever met. This task is to honor all things Bubba.
This is a two-book task.
Choose 2 different options and read one book for each option.
For this task option 2 has an A and a B, these are considered two different options and both may be used.
You may use one book with an MPG Sequential Art, Graphic Novels, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga.
Required: State the options
Option 1:
Robert, or Bubba, as I called him, was born December 1, 1969, and passed on March 15, 2022. For this task, read a book first published during his life.
Option 2:
When I say he was a geek, that is an understatement. Think: comics, high fantasy, adventure games, dungeons and dragons, and so on. This is one of the things I loved most about his personality, because these were not just a passing fancy; they were very much a part of him.
Book A - Read one book with an MPG Sequential Art, Graphic Novels, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga.
OR
Book B - Read one book with an MPG Fantasy. It can be embedded or stand-alone.
Option 3:
Bubba was the best husband and dad that I could have asked for. He indulged in whatever “great idea” I could come up with. He engaged in whatever the kids were interested in. And did it all with patience and a “whatever you want, babe.”
Read a book with a title word of 4+ letters that can be made from WHATEVER YOU WANT BABE. Letters can be used only as often as they appear in the saying.
Required: State the word

25.10 - RedSycamore's Task: Records of an Expedition
Help Thread
This season's tundra theme has me thinking of the very long-lived adventure/expedition genre. I only started to dip my toe into these sorts of stories when the SRC picked The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder as a group read in the Spring 2024 challenge, but they had caught my attention before then because of the genre's tendency toward ridiculously long titles and subtitles.
Seriously, look at this nonsense:
This is a two book task. However, Option 4 gives a one book option.
One book for this task may have the MPG(s) Manga/Comics/etc as long as it meets the SRC rules (take a quick peak at the new tweak that allows books with children's MPGs AND the MPG Young Adult or MPG Adult to be used without ARBookFinder).
Required: State the option
Option 1: Read a book with a title OR subtitle that's at least seven words long. Wordy sub/titles seem to be coming back into fashion, so you won't necessarily find yourself stranded in the 17th or 18th century for this one.
Ex. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Pictures at an Exhibition: Selected Essays on Art and Art Therapy
The Ship of Seven Murders: A True Story of Madness & Murder
(The & counts as an independent word by SRC rules, so that's a seven word subtitle)
Option 2: Then again, brevity is the soul of wit.
Read a book where the title OR subtitle is a single word according to SRC rules.
Ex. 1984
11/22/63
Shagduk
Either/Or: A Fragment of Life
Everything That Rises Must Converge: Stories
Some Things I Still Can't Tell You: Poems
Option 3: Balanced, as all things should be.
Read a book where the title AND the subtitle have the same number of words.
Ex. Directed by Desire: The Collected Poems
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope
The Mousetrap: A Play
Option 4: One book option
Read a single 500+ page book that satisfies two separate options above.
Ex. Title fulfills Option 2 and the subtitle fulfills Option 1:
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West
Challenger: A True Story of Heroism and Disaster on the Edge of Space
Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption
The title (or subtitle) fulfills Option 1 and title and subtitle are the same length for Option 3:

30.6 TessaVanessa’s Task: Love of Labs
Help Thread
This is a two book task. Choose 2 different options and read one book for each option.
Required: State the option.
You may use one book with a MPG Sequential Art, Graphic Novels, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga.
We love dogs– especially the Labrador Retriever, also known simply as the Labrador or Lab. The lab is a British breed of retriever gun dog. It was developed in the United Kingdom from St. John's water dogs imported from the colony of Newfoundland and was named after the Labrador region of that colony. It is among the most commonly kept dogs in several countries, particularly in the Western world.
We have 3 of these lovely creatures at the moment and will be adding a puppy to the crew in December.
Option 1:
Sasha was the first dog I fell in love with. She was a beautiful chocolate girl who loved to snuggle up beside me and take naps. She will forever be my girl.
Read a book with the word GIRL in the title. Plurals and possessives accepted, no other variations.
Option 2:
Ellie was rescued from our local animal shelter. She had a beautiful black coat and loved to bark at anything passing by–even if it was a block away. She was also known for counter surfing when you weren’t looking and loved bread.
Read a book with BLACK title words on the cover.
Required: Post the cover.
Option 3:
Duke was the king! We rescued him from the Humane Society and was told he was a boxer/lab mix. As he grew he looked nothing like a lab but he had my “Heart from the start!”
Read a book with a title (subtitles excluded) of at least 4 words where the first letter of each word appears in the phrase HEART FROM THE START.
Option 4:
Dutch is the most well-behaved dog we have ever had. He is a yellow English lab and is bigger than the others. At the last vet appointment he weighed 105 lbs. He is the best! I love that we can be outside with him off the leash and he stays right with you.
Read a book with at least 2 unique numbers from his weight (105 lbs.) in the page count.
Option 5:
Joey and Brutus are the “toddlers” in my house right now. Why we thought getting 2 puppies at the same time was a good idea is beyond me, but we love them so much. Joey is silver and Brutus is charcoal. They keep us on our toes.
Read a book that is #2 in a series. The series name and number must be present on the book's main page.
Option 6:
Puppy love is real! We are anxiously awaiting the next addition to our crew. His name will be Jack and he is a chocolate. We will be able to pick him up mid-December.
Read a book with chocolate candy or cake on the cover.
REQUIRED: post the cover.
30.7 Amy FL’s task - Dog tired
Help Thread
I have three dogs that bring me so much joy, but they also wear me out for different reasons. This is a two-book task. Read one book for two different options and state which options you’ve chosen in your post..
Option 1: Bandit
My 16-year-old Yorkie, Bandit, has been with me through some very tough times. He was a source of great comfort for me through my husband’s lengthy illness and now watching Bandit decline is so heartbreaking. He is losing his sight and hearing and I’m dreading the day when he crosses the rainbow bridge.
Read a book by a single author whose first and last initials can be found in “LITTLE SWEET BOY” which is a nickname Bandit deserves and answers to. Letters may be used as many times as they appear.
Option 2: Rocky
My 9-year-old Shih Tsu, Rocky, was recently diagnosed with diabetes and is borderline for Cushing’s disease. Thankfully he has a gentle disposition, so giving him insulin shots and pills is a breeze.
Read a book with a title word (subtitles excluded) of four or more letters that appears in the lyrics of Rocketman by Elton John. Rocketman is one of the many nicknames I have for Rocky. Words must be an exact match.
Lyrics can be found here: https://genius.com/Elton-john-rocket-...
Required: state the word
Option 3: Cooper
In September I adopted a stray that appears to be a Silky Terrier. He was found wandering the streets with matted hair and other signs of neglect. When my vet checked for a microchip we found out that he is much older than his energetic behavior and beautiful white teeth seemed to indicate. Cooper was the name his prior owner had given him and he will be eight on December 15. His original owner moved away and doesn’t want Cooper back, so he’s mine to train and, unfortunately, clean up after. He has separation anxiety, understandably, so he poops in the house whenever I go out.
My nickname for him is Super Duper Cooper, although given his bathroom habits he has a way to go to warrant the title. Read a book with at least two unique consecutive rhyming words in the title.
Examples.
The Eyre Affair and The Other Mother
