The story of Eleanore, daughter of a midwife who continues her mother's legacy as a healer after her mother passes away. The passing of the mother leaves Eleanore alone to follow her path. Living in medieval times, she is regarded as a witch and much of her work is done in secret. A chance encounter has her meeting the personal physician of Pope Clement, who takes her under his wing. The plague descends upon Europe and Eleonore's life will never be the same.

This was a stunning debut and the author deserves a larger audience.
Her research is sound, and the writing and storytelling kept me on the edge the entire book.

Highly recommended for HF fans.

Theresa | 15961 comments Eleanore is one of the most fascinating and influential women in European history and I'm delighted to see her getting attention. On my list.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11270 comments Ah, now I remember why I bought it. Early midwifes/ women in medicine. Thanks Joanne. I’m looking forward to reading it next year. Or sooner, since it sounds like it might have some “recommended” tags.

Sorry, wrong Eleanor, this is a nobody, fictional character. You are thinking if Eleanor of Aquitaine, maybe?

Theresa | 15961 comments Duh, yes. The witch accusations -- there were some of those I've come across in a few french books related to Aquitaine's Eleanor -- mostly said out of spite of course.

Still sounds like a really good read set at interesting times. Plus a witchy book that's atypical.
