TerryJane | 4533 comments AWARDS ACROSS TIME
Duration: January 1 - March 31, 2026

We will start the year by exploring a variety of book awards that have been given from the 1901 Nobel up to the present. Book awards recognize different types of writing, genres and audiences, and help people discover amazing books! From fantasy to mysteries, nonfiction to westerns, science fiction to young adult, focus on whichever awards you wish!

To join, post a message telling the challenge leader how many books you plan to read. If you are new to our group and/or our group challenges, take a moment to check out the Yearly, Quarterly, Monthly Challenges - Start Here thread for more information on how our challenges are run.

Below are forty awards, arranged in order of the years they were established, but there are many, many more that you may choose. Over time, some awards were renamed, paused for the war years, or discontinued altogether. Regardless, any books that were recognized as winners -- or in the case of the Nobel prize, the award winning author's works -- will qualify for this challenge. Nominees, shortlisted titles, honorable mentions, etc. are disallowed.

For each time period you may read one or more books which won:
⏳ - An award established during that timeframe, but received any year
⏳ - An award received during that timeframe, but established any year

The Goodreads Book Award page is searchable by award names.

Yes, the same book can count for both IF it fulfills the prompts. I try to match monthly and quarterly prompts to books I plan to use for yearly challenges, where I'm able.

I copied an FAQ below from Yearly, Quarterly, & Monthly Challenges -- Start Here. Hope this helps.

Can I use the same book for more than one prompt?
No, and yes. Within a specific challenge, each book only counts for one prompt. However, if you participate in multiple challenges, a single book can count toward each of those challenges, as long as it satisfies the rules and prompts for each challenge.

Since it’s only winners for this, is it winners only for the A-Z or just if the book falls under an award with that letter? I have a mix of nominees and winners currently since I was looking for certain books in general from reading lists I’m following.

I do believe A-Z: Award Winners is intended to be award winners as well, but you can certainly ask for clarification within that challenge.

I found winners for the A-Z Award Winners and found out the years each award I used was established so all 26 are used. I’m going to keep my number at 5 for now though (message 8)

♞ Pat Gent | 103 comments Before I get too much further along, my understanding of the way this challenge is phrased - Below are forty awards, arranged in order of the years they were established, but there are many, many more that you may choose. - we aren't limited to only the awards listed, so long as we select any book award that was established in the bracketed time frame.

Is this correct?

Yes, you've read that correctly, Pat. You may read winners of any awards established or received during the specified time periods.

Grace | 94 comments Hi There -
I have a question regarding the Hugo Awards. I finished a book where the SERIES won the award for best series in 2021, but the book I finished, #4 in the series, did not directly win any awards. Is that acceptable? Kindly advise with many thanks!

The book itself has to have won I believe. I had nominees and winners initially and had to change all the nominees in this challenge and the A-Z Award Winners yearly.

Awesome. I have a Lodestar award winner that's been on my TBR for a while. This gives me a chance to get it read! Thanks for the quick reply!

Thanks, Missy. I'll be reading #5 in the series which did win the Hugo for the book Network Effect. With hope I can fit it in toward the top of the pile and during this Q1. Happy Reading!

Hi Grace. What a conundrum! Our rules didn't cover this situation, so I did some digging - from Wikipedia:

"The Hugo Award for Best Series is one of the Hugo Awards given each year for science fiction or fantasy stories published or translated into English during the previous calendar year. The award is available for series of science fiction or fantasy stories consisting of at least 3 published works totaling at least 240,000 words, with at least one work released or translated into English during the previous calendar year."

So, my interpretation: The award was given in 2021 for the series up to that point. To meet the requirement a book had to have been released in 2020. Book #5, The Network Effect", was published in 2020. Book 4, which you read, was published in 2018, thus before the award was presented. I would say that's okay!
