any ideas how this group can run now that we won't be able to direct message each other?

I was thinkin the same thing. Perhaps moving to a new platform altogether is the best option - like moving to Fable or Bookly?

I felt genuinely shocked when I read the announcement. Through this group I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I have, and even though we exchange postcards and letters, the direct messages here are what keep those relationships functioning. Confirming addresses, checking that things arrived, talking about delays, etc... I honestly can’t imagine how any of this will work without private messaging.

I also can’t understand why Goodreads made this decision or what must have happened behind the scenes to justify this drastic change. As for moving to another platform… I admit I don’t see myself creating an account somewhere else. Goodreads has been my space for so many time that the idea of starting fresh somewhere new doesn’t appeal to me at all. I don’t know what the solution will be for this group, but I truly hope we find a way to exchange addresses safely and keep the group working within Goodreads.

I was so surprised too and sent a message back to GoodReads to ask what that meant. It’s so sad to see it just before the Christmas exchange which I look forward to every year. I have not gotten a response yet and maybe we never will know why. But it makes me so sad. Possibly too much work to deal with? I plan on saving every address of whoever I’ve sent to in the past but without a list or subject of what to write about, it won’t be the same. 🫤

It's honestly ridiculous . I understand some people are getting spam messages, but that should require increased spam and security features, not shutting down the function.

As a lot of people noticed, GR has been going downhill ever since amz bought them out. No updates or new features, even for obvious and simple things. And turning off functionality, bit by bit. I honestly don't understand why you'd buy a site, only to purposefully run it into the ground, but I guess that's what amz does.

That said, the Holiday Card Exchange _will_ be posted... to participate, you'll have to list your email, and we can exchange addys that way. We'll see how that goes, and I'll continue that into the new year.

Please do type out your thoughts here... about sharing emails in the signup thread and everything else. Ideas welcome!!

Also, yeah, thinking about possibly moving on or starting a sibling group elsewhere. I'm not familiar with any of the other book sites, tho. I'd LOVE to move to TheStoryGraph, but I don't think they have groups yet. And, I don't even know, do they have direct messaging? ha, like I said, not familiar!

Anyway. We'll stick together, one way or another!

No, Storygraph doesn't have DM's or book clubs. They say book clubs are "coming soon" but don't provide additional details on them.
