Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion
A Novel Role-Playing Game
>
ChrisP and Zuzana
Hi Chris! Here we can plan how to tackle the Apprenticeship Scheme quest and I will try to answer any questions you have about the game.BTW, I'm using either my personal account (as Zuzana - my real name) or the game mod account (as Keeper of the Books). :)
The rules thread is a good place to start. https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
There's also a beginner's guide. I wrote it several years ago, but it's still relevant.
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
It's great you're familiar with the RPG genre. This is in many ways an old-school 1990s text RPG - you're fighting monsters, completing quests, upgrading your character, building your inventory - the only difference is that reading books is your currency.
You can also check out my very first apprenticeship with Jackie - she had some great questions about how the game works.
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Thank you for being my mentor, the reading and gaming part of brain getting to meet still has me amped up. I am and heavy reading and I completely understand about your availability. I'm going to go review your first apprenticeship before I send my thoughts. I have reread your beginners guide many times since last night.
I didn't really say hello properly. My name is Chris. I tell people I'm from Iowa but I live in Indiana. To save money my wife and I combined our resources with her brothers family and we live in an overcrowded house that holds five of his seven kids ages 2-18, four adults, a grandma, and a friend. It is a very fluid household. I read anywhere between 1-8 books a week.
Tentative ThoughtsUnless your thoughts have changed in the last five years copying your first few moves with Jackie makes to much sense.

Do I need to read a book between 100-200 pages to level up my sword? or can it be any book?Can/Should I use time turner on Academy (I want to write DQ questions like I want to go to the dentist)
Academy II where do I announce I am working on this quest?
What did Sir Ray mean by this post End of the Year Quest Answered
Do I need to have all my book I've read since I started removed by the end of year?
I fixed the links in that post. Hopefully that will make more sense since you can click through to see what I was referencing:]
It appears to do Academy III I will need to do Academy.II - Literature
• Complete both of these quests: The Academy, The Academy - part II
When it says Complete does it mean, complete all tasks?
It seems doing the upgrading the Academy(s) getting the permanent increase to your HP seams like a good idea. Unless their is a better path.
I noticed in Reva guide she mention this:
The Gem of Power and the Green Gem (part of the Shield) each increase the Maximum Heath of your hero by +1 at any level.
Does that mean if you possess the gem(s) at every level upgrade you get a bonus +1 or is it a one time thing like a Health Gem?
Hi Chris, wow - 11 people in the house, including kids?! I can’t imagine you ever having a spare minute to be bored, especially with Christmas coming up! :) I’m genuinely impressed you still manage to read as much as you do. Getting through 1–8 books per week is perfect for getting the most out of the game, so I think you’re going to have a blast. If you’ve looked at the Jackie Apprenticeship thread, you already know a bit about me. I’m a 44-year-old lawyer from the Czech Republic. I spend my weekdays working in Prague and my weekends in the countryside. I don’t have children of my own, but I’m very close with my brother’s kids (both adults now), and we often do various activities together on weekends and we usually spend vacations together, too. I’ve been playing this RPG since it first came out back in 2015, and about a year ago I took on the mod role (just for the game, not the whole group).

My pleasure. :)

I would focus on your Welcome Basket and picking the right 15 books you read in the year before joining the game.
For staff lvl 5, you would need 15 books (so if you have all those series books on your read shelf from within last 12 month, that's great and you can include them in your Welcome Basket and immediately used them up for getting your staff to lvl 5.)

Magic Staff: LVL 5 (AP: 7)
I read a lot of series.
I would rearrange the order of the activities for your Adventure Log (because of how the leveling up works - healing your HP)The way you proposed it would give you
I. - 3 XP for saying hello in the Local Tavern (a separate quest) + it also ticks off task no. 2 in the Apprenticeship scheme.
1. Say hello in the buddy thread set up for you
✔2. Introduce yourself in the Tavern (the experienced player does not need to do this again!)
3. Newcomer reaches level 2 experience
4. Newcomer levels up a weapon
5. Newcomer levels up both weapons
6. Newcomer defeats their first monster
7. Together spell out one of NOVEL, ROLE, PLAY, GAME using standard spell out rules
8. Visit the melting pot and suggest a quest idea that you have worked on together
9. The experienced player gives a gift to the newcomer to help with a quest (e.g. potion/egg/magic item)
10. Both partners read a book that involves a teacher or student, or that has a link to a video game (i.e. Ready Player One or The Last Wish). It does not have to be the same book. The mentor can also read a book with the letters AS in the title.
II. saying hello in this buddy thread (we both did that) - that's task 1 done, and by finishing the second task, we'll get the tier 1 reward: Tutorial: Complete 2 tasks for 2XP
✔1. Say hello in the buddy thread set up for you
3. Newcomer reaches level 2 experience
4. Newcomer levels up a weapon
5. Newcomer levels up both weapons
6. Newcomer defeats their first monster
7. Together spell out one of NOVEL, ROLE, PLAY, GAME using standard spell out rules
8. Visit the melting pot and suggest a quest idea that you have worked on together
9. The experienced player gives a gift to the newcomer to help with a quest (e.g. potion/egg/magic item)
10. Both partners read a book that involves a teacher or student, or that has a link to a video game (i.e. Ready Player One or The Last Wish). It does not have to be the same book. The mentor can also read a book with the letters AS in the title.
this would mean leveling up because 5 XP = LVL 2 Hero without putting any of those 10 HP to use.
If I may I would rather we rearranged the order of the tasks - a little soft-ball not-really cheating.
---1. Saying hello at the tavern. 3 XP
doubles with task 2 in the Apprenticeship scheme: ✔2. Introduce yourself in the Tavern (the experienced player does not need to do this again!)
Hero: LVL 1, HP: 10/10, XP: 3
---2. Killing the Sewer Rat.
• Sewer Rat (3 AP, 5 HP - Reward: 1 Experience)
Hero's attack power: staff LVL 0 = 2 AP, HP: 10/10
round 1
Hero attacks Sewer Rat: 5 - 2= 3
Sewer Rat Attacks Hero: 10 - 3= 7
round 2
Hero attacks Sewer Rat: 3 - 2= 1
Sewer Rat attacks Hero: 7-3= 4
round 3
Hero attacks Sewer Rat: 1-2= Sewer Rat is Dead
Hero: LVL 1, HP: 4/10, XP: 4
It also completes task 6 in the Apprenticeship Scheme: ✔6. Newcomer defeats their first monster
---> 2 tasks from the Apprenticeship Scheme complete: Collect your Tier 1 reward = Tutorial: Complete 2 tasks for 2XP, those XP will carry you to LVL 2 (LVL 2 - 5 XP - max HP 12)
Hero: LVL 2, HP: 12/12, XP: 6
Now you can count--- 3. Apprenticeship Scheme task: ✔3. Newcomer reaches level 2 experience
--- 4. Saying hello in the buddy thread which completes task 1 of the Apprenticeship Scheme: ✔1. Say hello in the buddy thread set up for you
---> This means we can collect Tier 2 of the Apprenticeship Scheme rewards= Easy: Complete 4 tasks for 4XP.
Hero: LVL 2, HP: 12/12, XP: 10
---5. LVL up your Magic Staff (MS) to LVL 5 (BTW that's putting your Welcome Basket books to good use. Great job!)
Your MS is LVL 5 (AP: 7)
It conveniently completes task 4 of the Apprenticeship Scheme: ✔4. Newcomer levels up a weapon.
---6. Attack Goblin
Attacking Goblin
Hero - Staff: LVL 5 (AP: 7) 12 Health
Goblin 6 Attack 10 Health
Round One
Hero Attacks Goblin MS (AP:7), Goblin 3 HP
Goblin Attacks Hero (AP:6), Hero 6 HP
Round Two
Hero Attacks Goblin MS (AP:7), Goblin Dead
Hero 6 HP
Reward: 1 Experience, 1 Goblin Bone
Hero: LVL 2, HP: 6/12, XP: 11
Apprenticeship Scheme: Our progress✔1. Say hello in the buddy thread set up for you
✔2. Introduce yourself in the Tavern (the experienced player does not need to do this again!)
✔3. Newcomer reaches level 2 experience
✔4. Newcomer levels up a weapon
5. Newcomer levels up both weapons
The mentor can also read a book with the letters AS in the title.
we need 2 more tasks to get to Tier 3 rewards (Intermediate: Complete 7 tasks for 7XP and 10 gold). Those experience points would take you to another hero LVL (You need 15 Xp to level up to LVL 3)
I'd suggest tasks 8 and 9. I really like your quest suggestion about shoveling snow. Let's work on that for task 8.
I'm thinking about a proper gift for task 9. Probably a selection of special potions. I'll check my stack.
I was missing only needing 5XP to get to LVL 2, I was hung up there for a bit. I don't know if you ever saw the movie Clue at the end when he was counting how many bullets he should have in his revolver.
Task ✔9. The experienced player gives a gift to the newcomer to help with a quest (e.g. potion/egg/magic item)My gift is a basket of potions: a bunch of advanced potions: 2 Greater Poison Potions, 2 HP Bounce Potions, 2 Stoneskin Potions, and a bunch of regular ones: 3 Major Heal Potions, 2 Heal Potions, 1 Damage Potion and 1 Enhanced Weapon Potion.
You will get more of advanced potions only after you get to certain levels in the Halloween Event here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
The event monsters are a bit more advanced in terms of difficulty, so having some of these in the earlier stages of the game will be very helpful.
You can read up on these and other potions in this thread:

Thank you for the potions! To upgrade my sword do I need to read a book between 100-200 pages or will any book work?
ChrisP wrote: "Thank you for the potions! To upgrade my sword do I need to read a book between 100-200 pages or will any book work?"
Any book 100+ pages will work. But you might want to hold onto those longer books to use them later.
ChrisP wrote: "Clue is a one of my favorite dark comedies. It is great from the start."Good to know, I'll look if it's streaming in my country. The short clip was giving Knives Out vibes and I loved that movie.
ChrisP wrote: "...Can/Should I use time turner on Academy (I want to write DQ questions like I want to go to the dentist)
Yes, you'll need to use the Timewalking Potion from your Welcome Basket to complete that task. (There are not many expired tasks in the game that are worth the expense but this is definitely one of them.)
I do get it. I hated that task, too. The only one time I joined a NBRC group read was to complete this quest. We were reading a book I wouldn't under normal circumstances choose to read (Landline). It wasn't great despite winning a Goodreads award. And very few of the participants got the point of the book - as transparent and surface level as it was. I'm not planning to reapeat the experience anytime soon.
BUT... Health gems are very useful. Any quest or monster that gives you that extra 1 HP of max health is a must. So I would encourage you to work on that quest. In the end, it's worth it.
ChrisP wrote: "Academy II where do I announce I am working on this quest?"
You don’t need to announce that you’re working on quests or leveling up your weapons anywhere in the community spaces (Tavern, Theatre, Melting Pot), unless a quest specifically asks you to. What you do need to do is keep track of your completed (or ongoing) quests in your Adventure thread.
Take a look around and browse a few Adventure threads to see how others handle it. For example, I only log completed quests because I track my ongoing quests in a separate Reading Log in another group. Other adventurers reserve several comment posts on the first page of their thread for unfinished quests or future plans.
One important note: once you log a book as being used for a specific quest in your Adventure Log (the part of your thread where you record your activity), it becomes locked to that quest and you can’t move it to another one later.
That said, there are tasks in this quest (Academy II) that ask you to share information with the community - they specify if you do it by reporting back in the Local Tavern or in the Theatre threads.
I thought I would check anyway to see if I could kill Brown Bat. I can't I'm sure you would have told me if I could. I wouldn't want to waste a heal potion when I'm so close to leveling up.After the Academies
Would it be useful to work on the Bunny Quest?
I wouldn't be to difficult for me to plan ten books for the seasonal quests the Ray proposed unless it gets in the way of this.
If I add Florida Roadkill which I completed 12/4 to the sword task would it count towards seasonal? Or do I need to complete after I announce and can't take it out of archive? I can until I know more. I don't have to do the seasonal. I have ALOT of my TBR. I should have two more done today.
ChrisP wrote: "Do I need to have all my book I've read since I started removed by the end of year?"Nope! You’ve got a Tote of Infinite Books, and everything you’ve read stays there until you use it for a quest.
This year we ran a special “cut-off for old books.” Veteran players had to clear out their old, unused reads. That was only done because some players had been around for years, and during long periods when mods weren’t updating the game, they accumulated massive backlogs. Once I started releasing new quests, those players could complete everything on day one. So the old books had to go to restore balance.
You don’t need to worry about any of that. It was a one-time, exceptional event, and I don’t expect it will ever be necessary again.
Is it okay to post on the Tavern "Will anyone do a buddy read with me?" I can make anything work whatever you are reading. The Buddy Read thread in NBRC isn't very active. With DM ending I don't know what will be happening.
Ray's post in the Tavern is very useful. The end of the year is the only time when there are published quests with Santa Coupons as rewards. Some of these (and older ones that are still available) are limited to completion in December only.
A Santa Coupon is a special item that can be used in any quest to substitute for one book of your choice. However, only one Santa Coupon may be used per quest. It’s a unique item that cannot be duplicated and can only be earned by completing specific quests.
Once you play long enough you'll come across tasks that are impossible for you to handle - genres, or just too specific requirements for book content you can't fulfill. That's what Santa Coupons are for. You can't use more than one Santa Coupon per quest - but even that is extremely helpful.
Ray is right, you should definitely work on your 10-book TBR to participate in the The End (of Another Year) Is Nigh! quest. https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... (You can obtain the maximum of 3 Santa Coupons in rewards.)
You just need to figure out which 4 quests you'll assign your December TBR books to. Do it today. Because only books started after you announce your TBR in the Tavern count towards this quest.
I'd recommend to assign
1/ 3 books to Santa's Little Helper: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
It asks only for 3 books, so you could knock off the whole quest.
2/ 3 books that would count towards the pet you want: a bunny is a good 1st pet to have, or you might opt for a horse. Both are great starter pets.
3/ Are there any books needed for Academy Part II? Put them here on the list.
4/ Pick one another quest that looks interesting to you.
Once your list is completed, post it in the Tavern and you can start reading. You collect rewards as you go. Only books finished until the 31st December count.
Zuzana wrote: "Ray's post in the Tavern is very useful. The end of the year is the only time when there are published quests with Santa Coupons as rewards. Some of these (and older ones that are still available)..."
Thank You!
If you manage to complete your Goodreads 2025 Reading Challenge (the one on your homepage) - you can claim it as your Stick to your New Year's Reading resolutions (For a change) - task 10 completion and collect your reward (a Santa Coupon) in the Theatre thread. the quest is here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
I know that it's a lot of information to digest at once. So if it's too much or anything seems unclear, either slow me down or ask and I'll try to explain further.
ChrisP wrote: "Is it okay to post on the Tavern "Will anyone do a buddy read with me?" I can make anything work whatever you are reading. The Buddy Read thread in NBRC isn't very active. With DM ending I don't ..."
Absolutely. Go for it.
ChrisP wrote: "Thank You!"You’re welcome, Chris. :) I just hope I can explain everything in a way that makes sense and helps you get into the game. I really think it’s a lot of fun, and I hope you end up enjoying it as much as I do.
I'm keeping okay, its the amount of data posting and organizing. GR isn't working well right now and I have lost data trying to post.
ChrisP wrote: "Can I work on Academy and Academy II at the same time."Yes, you can. Nothing's stoping you.
ChrisP wrote: "I thought I would check anyway to see if I could kill Brown Bat. I can't I'm sure you would have told me if I could. I wouldn't want to waste a heal potion when I'm so close to leveling up."No you can't. It would lower your health to zero. And it's a no-no. As you got on your own, you could use a healing potion, but at this point of the game it would be a waste of resources. Keep your potions for attacking dragons or uncommon monsters, not common or timed monsters.

I wouldn't be to difficult for me to plan ten books for the seasonal quests the Ray proposed unless it gets in the way of this."
Bunny is a useful pet. At the start of the game there are not many easy ways to heal (without wasting resources). So those weekly +3 HP for consuming a bunny egg are really helpful.
ChrisP wrote: "If I add Florida Roadkill which I completed 12/4 to the sword task would it count towards seasonal? Or do I need to complete after I announce and can't take it out of archive? It depends what seasonal you mean. If it's the TBR one (aka The End (of Another Year) Is Nigh!), then only books started after the Local Tavern announcement count towards this quest. Anyway, your archive (aka The Tote of Infinite Books) should be almost empty with those 15 Welcome Basket books gone.
Florida Roadkill could be counted for task 3 in the Santa's Little Helper. But as you plan to finish other books in December, I would rather you use it for leveling up your sword.
ChrisP wrote: "Do you or others add their ranks and titles?"You mean "Sir" or "Lady"? Sometimes. A bit of roleplaying can be fun. But it's not a requirement.
Zuzana wrote: "ChrisP wrote: "Do you or others add their ranks and titles?"You mean "Sir" or "Lady"? Sometimes. A bit of roleplaying can be fun. But it's not a requirement."
I meant like Professor or whatever else you earn for doing the quests. Just a thought.
I was trying to remember the high language from the Dark Tower series yesterday.
ChrisP wrote: "It appears to do Academy III I will need to do Academy II - Literature"You will need to complete a bunch of quests first. There are sets of simple Academy quests: Academy Literature, Geography and History, and Academy II Literature, Geography and History. You need to complete only two from each set. But there are bigger, longer and more complex Academy and Academy II quests and you need to complete both of those for Academy III, as well.
ChrisP wrote: "• Complete both of these quests: The Academy, The Academy - part II
When it says Complete does it mean, complete all tasks?"
Yes, you have to complete all the tasks in Academy and Academy II.
ChrisP wrote: "It seems doing the upgrading the Academy(s) getting the permanent increase to your HP seams like a good idea. Unless their is a better path.
I noticed in Reva guide she mention this:
The Gem of Power and the Green Gem (part of the Shield) each increase the Maximum Heath of your hero by +1 at any level.
Does that mean if you possess the gem(s) at every level upgrade you get a bonus +1 or is it a one time thing like a Health Gem?"
You want Health Gems/Green Gem - these are compulsory items for your inventory.
Not sure I understand your question. The gems add +1 HP to your max health permanently.
Example: You gain 1 Health Gem on LVL2 Hero: Your HP will be 13/13 HP (12+1). Once you level to LVL 3 Hero your health would be 15/15 HP (14+1). The bonus is permanent.
My current Hero LVL is 16 and I have 5 Health Gems and 1 activated Green Gem in my shield. My max health is 46 HP (40+5+1).
If you get a green gem every time you level up it give you in increase to HP with each level. Compounding. After rereading it I'm think no.
ChrisP wrote: "I meant like Professor or whatever else you earn for doing the quests. Just a thought.I was trying to remember the high language from the Dark Tower series yesterday."
Oh, those titles are just for fun! But you’re absolutely welcome to use them if you like. The Local Tavern crowd has never objected to a bit of bragging. XD
