SOLVED: Children's/YA > SOLVED. YA fiction. I think I read it in the 1970’s. A teen boy’s ancestor was pressed to death after being accused of witchcraft.

Ghost of a Rose | 5 comments A teen boy comes to live in a remote place where he is very lonely. His male ancestor saved the family’s land by allowing himself to be pressed to death rather than falsely confess to allegations of witchcraft. The boy eventually makes friends with with a brother and sister, Pip and Gilly, who live across a bog or marsh from him. I believe the setting is in New England in the 1960’s or 1970’s.

The novel also has elements of historical fiction, in the parts about the boy’s ancestor. It was probably based on the true story of Giles Corey of Salem.

This book has haunted me all my life, and I’d like to give a copy of it to my grandchildren.
