For this month's challenge I chose That: Read a book with a 4 syllable word in the title, for which I read Reading in the Brain: The Science and Evolution of a Human Invention by Stanislas Dehaene (Ev-o-lu-tion). This was a fascinating read. The author breaks down the science behind how it is that we are capable as a species of reading. Turns out it is NOT due to an evolutionary development. We are in fact repurposing some brain components originally designed for visual pattern recognition and used that to create writing patterns that fit into that function. And it's wild the biomechanics of how it all works, with multiple text, sound, and encyclopedic info being processed to generate results per word within milliseconds. Reading this book about the science of reading really gave me a greater appreciation for this action that beforehand I took for granted. 4 1/2 stars.
