On Baek Se-hee's I WANT TO DIE BUT I WANT TO EAT TTEOKBOKKI , this Club's December 2025 book (with optional sequel):
We distributed some initial discussion questions for consideration ahead of our latest big gathering Club tomorrow (Thursday, December 11, 2025):
_______________
(1.) What was Baek Sehee’s motivation for writing Tteokbokki ? What were her goals?
(2a.) Why did Tteokbokki become popular and sell well in Korea?
(2b.) Why did Tteokbokki become popular and sell well internationally?
(2c.) How/why might the two reactions (Korean vs. international) be different?
(3.) Should the book be classified as “self-help”? As “memoir”? As something else?
(4.) Did the format of the book (psychologist-session transcripts) work for you?
(5.) It’s been said that Tteokbokki is an ‘Instagrammable’ book. What does this mean?
(6.) Some reviewers or commentators say they see political message(s) in Tteokbokki, despite the simplicity of form. Do you agree? If so, what are the political message(s)?
