I know this has come up before with classics. Usually, since classics have been in publication for decades, sometimes centuries, there can be a variety of versions, abridgements, etc.

With The Phantom of the Opera, I put the version I have up on the group page, but that is not necessarily the version I am expecting everyone to hunt down and read. Whichever version is most easily accessible to you should be fine.

In fact, feel free to use this thread to post which edition you found so maybe we can compare the differences - if any. (It may just be a difference in cover art!)

Maybe there are not as many versions of the Phantom of the Opera - hopefully!

When I read Les Misérables, I had a copy of the unabridged version. But, when I looked at the book store there were versions that ranged from 250 or so pages all the way up to 1500!

are the three I have. It's hard to tell if they are different because the actual book size is different so I can't go by pages, and I always find my Nook Books have a different number of pages than actual books. I'll need to look more closely.

I notice that at least two of these have Alexander Teixeira de Mattos as the translator. From experience with other books, if the translator is the same, they are probably the same version. Not a guarantee, but a good sign!

Kandice | 944 comments There are a few books I've read more than once because they had different translators. It's crazy how changing just a word or phrase here and there can change the feel of a book!

I cannot seem to find anywhere on online a listing of who translated the version I have. My copy is at home . . . I will have to check and see - it must have a translator! Unless the version I have is in French . . .
