Nancy Drew Readers discussion

Hey, group. I need some help. I am doing research in another area and I need to know the answer to a question. In the 1939 Nancy Drew movie "Nancy Drew, Trouble Shooter," the solution to a murder is found in the fact that when the body was buried, the seeds of a rare flower were inadvertently buried with him. When the seeds grew, the flower was an indication of the body's location. My question is this: Was this premise in one of the actual books--it would have to have been in one of the first 16 Nancy Drew titles, which were the only ones published before the movie came out. Anyone?

Hi, Megan! I don't recall reading about that scenario in any of the first 16 Nancy Drew books that I've read. But the ones I read are 1960's or 70's revisions (the ones with yellow covers). I'm not sure if the original version of one of these stories has that particular scene. Hope that helps a bit!

Thanks, Charmaine. That's very helpful. As you know, the versions in the yellow covers--as long as they run over 200 pages--are identical to the 1930s versions except for the art.

That particular scene does not occur in any of the first 16 books. IIRC, those movies from the 1930s were not derived from any of the original books.

Also, I am not sure what you meant by this? The books that were published starting in 1930 with the blue hardcover and dust jacket have different texts than the yellow picture hardcover books. Some of the books may retain the same plot but the actual text were revised starting in 1959. There are a few yellow hardbacks that have the original text in them, though.

I wish this group was more active :( I saw a friend had put a Nancy Drew novel on her list of books to read and it reminded me of my previous devotion to reading Nancy Drew novels as a child. So in 2018 I am going to work my way through all of the novels again, I wish I could do it in one go but sadly money is not even close to unlimited lol. Anyone else want to join me in this?? I think it would be fun and interesting to revisit that which I was so in love with as a child.

I wish I could do that, too! Too many other books prevent me from doing that, though. Maybe someday when my physical to-read shelves are empty :)

In the meantime, I have about 10 of the old Nancy Drews that I own that I haven't read yet, so if/when you read those, I'll join in!

I would love to reread and discuss Nancy Drew! I have several of the originals and several of the Nancy Drew Files as well. I am always up for discussing our favorite girl detective. :)
