Anyone seen any good movies lately? Anything you can't wait to see?

I just went today to see Paranormal Activity and I think I'm going to have problems getting to sleep tonight! GREAT/SCARY movie, but I won't be watching it again - that's for sure!

I saw a preview for the movie The Lovely Bones based on the book by Alice Sebold. I read that book about six years ago. Very powerful book. Very disturbing story. It was so well written, parts of it really made me feel...unclean, for lack of a better word. I wonder if the movie will have the same affect.

Alicia (diva2416) | 819 comments I couldn't make it through The Lovely Bones, it really creeped me out. I wonder if I would be able to sit through the movie, I may be willing to give the book another shot.

Kristine (kc0217) | 335 comments I don't think I could watch the movie - the book was hard to get through. Did you read Lucky? It's also by Alice Sebold & is a memoir.

I listened to the audiobook for Lucky. That one was tough too! I tried to read The Almost Moon but I just couldn't do it. Her books are seriously dark. In the preview for The Lucky Bones, they didn't allude to her being raped before the guy killed her so it may not be as creepy/wrong/rough whatever. I don't know, I have a morbid curiosity that makes me want to see it. Mark Whalberg is in it as her dad.

Melanie is on Storygraph (mcipher) | 372 comments I loved The Lovely Bones but I don't think it would be my type of movie.... We just watched Adventureland last night (yeah, not book-related at all) - it wasn't at all what I expected, I had been planning on something really funny and it was about adolescent-type relationships... kind of meh. I would LOVE to see Where the Wild Things Are but my son already went w/ his grandmother and I can't justify going alone. LOL I'll wait for the DVD.

I didn't like Almost Moon as much as the other two. And you're right, all of her books are dark, but she's a fantastic author.

There was a lady that walked into Paranormal Activity yesterday with two little boys about six years old. I thought to myself that they were TOO young to be at a movie like that and almost asked her if she was in the right movie. After about five minutes, she got up and ran out, I'm assuming, to check the poster outside the door. She came back in and told the boys they were in the wrong theatre and hustled them out the door. Good thing too. I know I had a real problem sleeping last night, I can't even imagine how a six year old would take that movie!

I think that's why I couldn't finish Almost Moon. I just couldn't take the darkness of the story.

It's really good Kristine. Just don't expect to be able to sleep the night you watch it! :)
I was so exhausted last night from hardly any sleep Sunday night that I was able to sleep decently. But I still kept waking up and thinking about it.

So I watched four movies Wednesday and Thursday. I know, it's a lot in two days but I didn't have anything to do other than homework....and I successfully avoided that. LOL!

Anyway, I watched Four Christmases - now I'm a huge Reese Witherspoon fan and I'm totally in love with Vince Vaugh but this movie was....well....I don't know. I don't want to say it sucked but it was just really lacking in something. I just didn't really care for it.

My Sister's Keeper - OMG! SOOOOOO good. I committed the cardinal sin and didn't read the book first! I know, I'm horrible! But the movie was so good, I balled like a baby.

The Ugly Truth - I don't know if I just wasn't really in a chick flick type of mood or what but this didn't strike very high on my rating scale either. It was cute, but it didn't really keep my interest. I watched the whole thing but my mind kept wandering.

Angels & Demons - Very, very good movie. And yes, I read the book before watching it. The only thing I didn't like about it was parts of the cinematagraphy. I hate it when the screen is so dark you can barely see what's going on if you have the lights on.

No one is working this weekend so I can bring in a portable DVD player and go to town. I am dying to see My Sister's Keeper!! But I want to read the book first (ARGH!) so as to not ruin any potential plot points. Yikes!

You should definitely read the book first. The book is SOOOO good. I was disappointed because the ending wasn't the same! :(

message 14: by Nadia (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) Wow! You watched some great movies Stacy! Now I want to go rent some. I read My Sister's Keeper so I will definitely be checking that one out. Oh and I read Angels and Demons so I need to see that one. Plus, I did want to see The Ugly Truth, so I'll probably check out that one, too. Yikes! There are a few others on my list of movies to watch, like The Proposal, Wolverine and and 17 again. So many good movies to see!

message 15: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) I'm jealous -- I so rarely get to go to the movies. I've literally been to two movies in the theater this year, and I haven't exactly picked well - "Angels & Demons" and "Love Happens." "Angels" was for no other reason than I had a week off of work and babysitters for an evening, and I wanted to go see a movie! It was the only one that was playing at the time that was remotely appealing. I haven't read that book (though I did read and like The Da Vinci Code), but I still could tell the movie wasn't all that great an adaptation. It gave me my popcorn fix, though! "Love Happens" is one I saw on a rare Sunday movie outing with my mom (I do an afternoon Spin class on Sundays, so Sunday movies never work for me). It was decent, but it made me cry my eyes out, which I wasn't too thrilled about.

I really want to see both "Nine" and "Invictus" when they come out. And I have to admit I'm a little intrigued by "The Blind Side."

Oh, and we did watch part of "Cars" on TV Thanksgiving night. That's my son's favorite movie, but I always really enjoy watching it with him.

I actually made it to the theatre more last year than I have this year. Oh well. I'm so behind on the movies I want to see. Usually, if I don't see it in the theatre, I then forget all about it until it happens to be on cable sometime. LOL! I very, very rarely rent movies which is why I splurged (at $3.79 apiece) and rented four. I figured it'd do me in for the rest of this year and part of next. :)

Suzanne | 767 comments Saw New Moon last night. :) I loved it. New Moon is my favorite of the Twilight books.

There was a preview for The Lovely Bones last night. I haven't read the book yet.

I am so far behind on movies. I have had the same 2 Netflix dvds for months!

I seen New Moon the night it came out. I bought my tickets way back on September 30th. CRAZY!!! I think New Moon was better than Twilight. I can't wait for Eclipse. I think that one is coming out on June 30, 2010. YAY!

I always tease Tara about being a fan of Twilight. I saw in the Target ad that they have Edward and Bella dolls for $25 each and I told her that I was going to buy her one for Christmas. LOL!!

message 23: by Kourtney (new)

Kourtney (readthateventually) | 1215 comments LOL Stacy! You inspired me tonight...not to run out and buy Twilight dolls but to rent movies and have a movie night! I just finished The Ugly Truth. I thought it was cute! I laughed at a few parts, but nothing I'd want to watch again. Up next? Four Xmas's, Up, Ghosts of GF Pasts, The Proposal and Slumdog Millionaire (that's right - I've never seen it and had to break up the Chick Flick movie extravaganza!)

message 24: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 767 comments I got The Proposal from Netflix yesterday & will watch it tonight. I also want to see 4 Christmases and Ghosts of GF Past.

Good luck with 4 xmases - let me know what you think of it.

I want to see Ghosts of GF Past and The Proposal too. It may be a while before I get around to renting them though. That's one thing I miss about living on my own - full control of the TV, even though I don't watch much of it.

message 26: by Kourtney (new)

Kourtney (readthateventually) | 1215 comments So I watch 4 xmases and thought it was cute, but nothing I'd rush out to watch again. I watched Ghosts of GF Past and wish I never spent the money on it! Not good! I have some time to kill until my next appointment (have the day off and have a bunch of errands to run) so I'm making lunch and then going to watch The Proposal...we'll see how that goes but I love me some Ryan Reynolds! Yummy!

message 27: by Stacy (new)

Stacy (stacymarie913) | 5567 comments Mod
Guess I'll steer clear of Ghosts of GF Past then. Hopefully The Proposal will be better!

message 28: by Kourtney (new)

Kourtney (readthateventually) | 1215 comments The Proposal was good (and yummy Ryan Reynolds can really just stand there and I'd watch). So was Slumdog Millionaire. Now, even though I'm only halfway through the book, I'm going to watch Twilight so I can return all the DVD's. What a movie filled weekend!

message 29: by Tara (new)

Tara I really liked Slumdog Millionaire. I seen The Proposal at the theatre and loved it. I would definitely watch that movie again.

Kourtney-Twilight is a good movie but New Moon is better.

Stacy-Yes, I love the Twilight series but I won't own any of the dolls, or other stuff that's out, excpet when the Scene It Twilight game comes out for the Nintendo DS. LOL!

message 30: by Nadia (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) I totally agree with you Tara, New Moon is definitely better than Twilight. I just watched it again last night!

I have yet to see Slumdog Millionaire and I have it sitting by my tv - ugh! I should watch it soon.

I want to see The Proposal, I heard it was really good.

Did anyone see Julie and Julia? Was that any good?

message 32: by Kourtney (new)

Kourtney (readthateventually) | 1215 comments I finally finished reading Twilight so now I can FINALLY watch the movie! I think I am going to sneak it to work - I'm assuming since this is the weekend everyone is finishing up Xmas shopping that I won't have to deal with a lot of customers. Here's hoping!

Kourtney (readthateventually) | 1215 comments When I got home last night I watched Twilight and I now see why everyone is team Edward...YUM! But my heart still belongs with team Jacob :D Good movie but the book was much better. It felt weird...one day Bella and Edward aren't talking, the next she's saying she loves him? Where was the build up? Had I not read the book I would have been scratching my head as to where that came from...

The Blind Side is about a family in Memphis who takes in and eventually adopts a high school student who goes on to become a NFL football player. It's a true story -- the guy actually plays for the Baltimore Ravens. Definitely a feel-good movie worth watching!

I made it to my 4th movie this year (!) Sunday night -- "Up in the Air." That's also a good one. It's a little dark and quirky, but very good. And it stars George Clooney, who seems to just keep getting better-looking the older he gets...

I'm worried too!!!! :( :(

My sister rented "My Sister's Keeper" and "500 Days of Summer" so I'm going against my read the book first rule and watching them both today!

message 43: by Kourtney (new)

Kourtney (readthateventually) | 1215 comments I watched My Sister's Keeper and thought it was really hard to be sympathetic towards the mom at ALL. But then curiousity got the best of me and with all the hub-bub of how the movie and book are so different at the end I had to find out what that change was. Off to Wikipedia I went! And wow - that is quite the difference! I haven't read it yet and don't have it in the challenge so it will be some time before I get to read it, but I wonder how people would have reacted had they stayed faithful to the story. They should have made both endings and let test audiences decide, then put it on the DVD. Oh and I cried...and cried...and cried. It will have to be some time before I read the book if I'm going to cry there too!

I loved the movie, and I'm with Kourtney, I had a hard time feeling any sympathy for the mom. I want to read this book, but it's one of those heavy ones and I kinda have to be in the mood to read something like that.

Kourtney (readthateventually) | 1215 comments I was running through my tv guide and saw the title so I DVR'ed it. I haven't read the books but thought I'd take a peek at it to see if it will prompt me to start reading the series too.

Tara I also DVR'd it. I am waiting for Netflix but now I can cancel it. It is on Nickelodeon 2. I was surprised to see it on there too.

I seen two movies this weekend. One on DVD that we bought "The Hangover" which was funny but not the funniest movie I have ever seen like some people told me. Bradley Cooper is definitely hot in this movie.

I also went to the theatre and seen "Did you hear about the Morgan's?" with Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant. So funny! Hugh Grant cracks me up in this movie. I definitely recommend it.
