Brother in Arms, written by Paul Langan and Ben Alirez, is a book about a teenage boy somewhere around the 1990’s in a city full of gang and violence that goes by the name of Martin Luna. Martin is a fatherless teenage boy who hangs out with the wrong crowd, wrong crowd meaning a gang. A gang that is ran by a much older and bigger man than martin named Frankie. One day martin’s youngest and only brother “Huero” is shot in a drive by, shot by the bullet that was meant for Frankie. Further on in the book martins rage and greediness in revenge only grows, martins mother knows martins seeks revenge so for his safety they move to aa new apartment and to a new high school, Bluford High, where he quickly makes enemies and gets into trouble.
Like many other days martin is hanging out with Frankie and other group members when surprisingly martin’s Brother Eric, a.k.a. Huero, arrives looking for his brother. Then out of the corner a van comes around the corner with alarming speed, everyone knew a drive by was to take place at that time except for martin’s brother. Martin quickly tries to warn his brother of the danger and as the van comes closer a gun pulled out through the window and a shot is fired. Once the van turns the next corner martin quickly rushes to his brother. Martin holds his brother then suddenly feels something warm on his palm where he is holding his brothers head. Martin knows what has happened and in hope screams out to everybody as they watch in terror to get an ambulance. The day martin’s brother died is the day his whole life turned around.
Martin’s mother as depressed as martin for the loss of her child knows what martin is capable of and knows he seeks revenge. In order from martins following his brother’s fate she finds a new home and is martin is transferred to a new high school, Bluford High. Martin doesn’t like the new arrangement one bit. Martins first days at school are not the best, he has already made an enemy and seems to be nagged at by all his teachers about his efforts in class. But there is a girl martin has come to like, her name is Vicky. She is a beautiful, intelligent girl who seems to like martin back as well. Martin’s life only gets harder having to deal with a girl and old friends, who he visited by taking a bus to his old home, is very struggling. He has never stopped thinking about his brother and when didn’t visit his friends he was at hueros tombstone with flowers talking to him in hopes of relief. Martin one day is informed by Frankie who the killer is, Frankie did his best finding the killer because not only was martin his friend but that bullet huero took was meant for him. Once martin is informed about the plan to kill him by Frankie he is come to his better sense and not to take part in the murder. Martin’s rightful decisions led him to a better life and justice for his late brother Huero.
