Desmond Jones | 1 comments This realistic fiction/ sports book was written by Kathy Mackel. Boost is about 2 individuals who are sisters who have specific talents; either doesn’t weigh enough or weighs too much, 13 year old Savvy who is 6 foot 2 has an outstanding 3 point shot. Even though she just moved to town, she has an opportunity to play for the elite senior basketball team, fire. The only problem is that she gets pushed around the court by the older, strongest players. Her older sister Callie made the varsity cheerleading squad as a freshman. She always held the position of a flier but…during practice, she finds out she’s too heavy to be a flier. Both Savvy and Callie need to boost theirs games if they want to be able to maintain their spots at the top but once drugs are found In Savvy’s gym bag, she claims they aren’t hers. Suddenly fingers are being pointed but no one knows who is telling the truth.
In the beginning, Savvy and her family moved from New Mexico to Rhode Island where she meets a girl named Nina Gonzalez or “Gonzo” who becomes her best friend. They both try out for an elite basketball team for players around the age of 18. Savvy was iffy about if she’d make the team or not but she ended up making it because the coach stated that she had a lot of talent. He also stated that her talent is raw and so he gives her a workout plan that she must on every night to become a better basketball player. While she’s working on that, her sister Callie encounters a problem as well. All of a sudden she becomes over weight and unconditioned, causing her problems with cheerleading. Callie also gets jealous of her younger sister because of her basketball achievements. But basketball isn’t the only thing Savvy is interested in. An athlete named Mark catches her eye. She flirts with him a little bit and he appears to like her back. But eventually Savvy catches Mark kissing her sister and finds out that he was just being nice to her just to get to Callie. Savvy eventually earns a starting position on her elite basketball team and becomes a star with a lot of hard work and dedication. Her teammate Lori however was not happy with Savvy at all because she took her starting position. Then a huge conflict arises during the tournament, steroids were found in Savvy’s gym bag. Everyone thinks that Savvy has been cheating, and it certainly looks that way because her body is very detailed. She knows that someone planted the drugs in her bag and sets out to figure out whom.
I found this book highly interesting. It really captured my attention and I am an individual who doesn’t find reading very enjoyable. But, if you enjoy sports, especially basketball, I believe that you will definitely find this book entertaining.
