Benjamin (ben21) A way for us to get to know each other. Tell us your favorite band and why they are your favorite!

message 2: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (ben21) Mine is The Twilight Singers. Their lyrics are like stealing pages out of my life. Listening to em makes me feel like Im not alone.

oh man, this is creepy but I was thinking about asking you guys the same question!

I was (well, am) an only child, so music has always been my best friend in a lot of ways. I bought my first album when I was only 7 - Blondie's Parallel Lines actually. (yes it was current, I know I am getting up there).

I have always loved The Smiths and that is my one huge love I have everything they ever did multiple times etc etc etc. I have never felt Morrissey was as good on his own, but of course I have most of his stuff, too. I like Belle & Sebastian, British Sea Power, the Red Hot Chili Peppers (sort of a different genre from the other bands, but they always cheer me up plus I think they're just plain goofy sometimes), Talking Heads...

message 4: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (ben21) LOL Talking Heads are awesome. Belle went on to do a couple albums with Mark lanegan which are also great. Like the Smiths and Morissey too.

message 5: by Paul (new)

Paul I like the old classics - Hendrix, Led Zep, Bowie, Stones and so on. Current bands I enjoy - some of Green Day, some of Nickelback, some of Metallica, Red Hot Chillis, a few others.

Spot the common theme - rock.

message 6: by Lori (new)

Lori (barfield) Hi Paul, what's up?

My most favorite band ever is QUEENSYCHE. I got to see them a few weeks ago for my Bday. I had the best seat in the place, if you think standing up all through the show as your seat. It was at the Lincoln theatre, and it only holds about 5 maybe 6 hundred people it was awesome! Funny how Benjamin said of his fav that their lyrics were like stealing pages of his life, because my fav has a CD called Promise Land, and i feel like that pretty much sums up my life so far.

I can pretty much listen to anything but i don't like hard rap or bluegrass. Sometimes i get in the mood for a little Jazz, or Blues, and yes a little country. :)

message 7: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) I don't have one favorite band. I like R.E.M., Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Queen, ELO, Talking Heads, Rolling Stones, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

oh yes David Bowie. I neglected to mention him earlier. My first Bowie album was Scary Monsters!!

message 9: by John (new)

John Everson (johneverson) | 8 comments I can't commit to just one but... The Cure should be at the top of everyone's list, even if not #1.

Short of that, This Mortal Coil and Delerium should be contenders too!

message 10: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (lifeasabooknerd) Okay, I'm a music junkie, so I could list band after band and then read it and think, OH I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT (insert band name). Some of my favorites are:

Led Zeppelin
U2
Tori Amos
Kings of Leon
Queen
Van Halen
The Cranberries
REM
David Bowie
Cake
The Cure
The Beatles
Journey
Tegan and Sara
Ani DiFranco

I also love love love 80s music. Honestly, there's so much good stuff out there. Probably more than you can ever discover no matter how long you live. I wouldn't be opposed to a CD swap. We tried it in another group and it was not the best result, but I think it was in the execution.

message 11: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (ben21) Unfortunately I cant do cd swaps, all my stuff is digital. You guys are welcome to though (as long as ya dont hold me responsible lol).

message 12: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (lifeasabooknerd) My stuff is all over the place, but I've been adding it all to the computer and making it digital too. No more having to stop listening to songs cuz the cds are scratched!

message 13: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (handmaiden11) | 56 comments Mod
I'd be up for a CD swap!

message 14: by Lori (new)

Lori (barfield) Hi Michelle, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, 80's music, not to many of us around. All the great Hair bands, & one hit wonders.

message 15: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (lifeasabooknerd) Don't forget Haircut 100's "Love Plus One". LOVE THE 80s!!

message 16: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (handmaiden11) | 56 comments Mod
Whip it, whip it good...!
Yeah! Funny I found my Duran Duran fan club folder in an old box yesterday. Ah the 80's..yep, gotta love it.

message 17: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (lifeasabooknerd) My kids watch Yo Gabba Gabba. Anyone else watch Mark Mothersbaugh doing the art skit? Haha...I love it. He's still very original.

message 18: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (lifeasabooknerd) True, true. It's actually not my favorite. I like Through Being Cool, Jerkin' Back and Forth...

and let's not forget Beautiful World. Haha.
What weirdos. Its great.

message 19: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (ben21) I cant listen to music while reading, its too distracting for me. Seems a lot of people do though.

message 20: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (lifeasabooknerd) I have that soundtrack too Shaun. I DO like it. Listened to it a little the other day. I can't play those freaking games unless my husband is home, because I get weirded out. I don't know why...I can do movies and books, but not video games. I'm a dork! I usually don't mix music and books, but it sounds like a good idea. I get so immersed in my books, I doubt if I'd hear the music playing, but the idea of what you're listening to while reading affecting the way you take in the story is very interesting to me.

message 21: by Wayne (new)

Wayne | 1 comments My favorite type of music is metal. Don't listen to much else.

Too many favorite bands to name:
Slayer
The Black Dahlia Murder
Job for a Cowboy
Behemoth
Skeletonwitch
Children of Bodom
Cannibal Corpse
old Sepultura
King Diamond
and the list goes on and on and on...lol

message 22: by Megan (new)

Megan Hi everyone ~ I'm new to this group & have just been lurking so far ;) But had to post in response to Rebekah's Duran Duran fan club folder... I'm *still* a member of the Duran Duran fan club, lol :) So, it should go without saying who my favorite band is!

Good to see so many 80's fans here!

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll chime in and say I don't really have one.. I have enjoyed M&M,System of a Down, Gorillza's, to name a few of the somewhat newer bands out there.. Still haven't heard Lady Ga Ga sing yet but I'll get around to it. Right now I'm into The Beatles again, Wings & some Elton John (all from my youth) Maybe cuz I know all the words & can dance to it :)

message 25: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 09, 2009 05:42AM) (new)

I thought about it and I guess it would be
'The Beatles'
I hadn't listened to the music in like 25+ years because it was pretty much played to death and I wanted and like 'newer music' But listening to them again after all these years just puts me in such a :) mood. They are 1 of the only bands IMO that actually evolved w/the times before they burned out or just got sick of eachother and broke up :(
I don't know if the other bands or music will do that for me...
Cept for maybe 'The Gorillaz'
The Beatles are #1 in my music book :)

message 26: by Jerrod (new)

Jerrod (liquidazrael) White/Rob Zombie
Samael
Sentenced
Soulfly
VNV Nation
Juno Reactor
John Williams
most KMFDM
Testament
Demon Hunter
most Rammstein
Reverend Horton Heat
Southern Culture on the Skids
Bomboras
Louis Armstrong
Chuck Berry
Jerry Lee Lewis

these are the ones that are played regularly on my MP3 player or piped through my PC to the stereo.

message 27: by Lori (new)

Lori (barfield)
And watching lovers part

I feel you smiling

what glass splinters

lie so deep in your mind

to tear out from your eyes

with a word to stiffen

brooding lies

and i'll only watch

you leave me

furtherbehind

Can anyone guess this 80's song, & who sings it. Hint they have already been mentioned.

Duran Duran's The Chauffeur - such a gem and so overlooked! Is that on Rio? I think it is. I'm going to have to go home and download it - I only have Rio on vinyl! I can't even play it because I don't have a record player.

message 29: by Lori (new)

Lori (barfield) Awesome Rebekah, But it's on the Arena cd. I LOVE LOVE LOVE them. Sold all my albums a long time ago, but i still have a big box of .45's in the attic. Your right it's so overlooked. They had a lot of air play with a lot of songs, but only the catchy tunes. They had quite a few good songs that never got played. This being one of them. I think 80's music rocks!

message 30: by LinBee (last edited Dec 29, 2009 09:02AM) (new)

LinBee I love so many different kinds of music. My all-time favorite band is Linkin Park. I just love their lyrics and their beats. I also have a slight crush on Chester (the lead singer).

message 31: by Konnie (new)

Konnie Jones (konniej) | 1 comments Avenged Sevenfold, Stones, Motley Crue, In This Moment, Theory of a Deadman, etc, etc.

Quick mention....Avenged Sevenfold's song "Little Piece of Heaven" is definitely horror based, kind of like an Edward Lee novel! If you think Lee's stuff is gross, don't ever listen to the lyrics of this song!

message 32: by Marvin (new)

Marvin (mpvernon) I've been around for a while so my all-time favorite group in the Rolling Stones.

But I'm not stuck in the 70s. My two runner-up groups are Nine Inch Nails and The Hold Steady.

message 33: by StrawBerry (new)
