Gorilla by Anthony Browne is a wonderful children’s book with fantastic illustrations. At the very start of the story we are introduced to Hannah and we are told that she loves Gorillas. The story explains how Hannah’s father is very busy and doesn’t have time to take her to the Zoo to see a real gorilla. A lot of children will be able to relate to having busy parents who work long hours and who may be unable to spend a lot of time together. The story continues and explains that for her birthday, Hannah had asked for a gorilla and when she woke up in the middle of the night she saw a toy gorilla at the end of her bed. The toy gorilla then came to life. This allows children to use their imagination about what they would do if one of their toys came to life. The gorilla takes Hannah to the zoo, then to the cinema and then finally for some food. At the end of the story, Hannah’s father takes her to the zoo which makes her very happy. This story is great for Early Year’s children and whilst on placement in a reception class, this story was a favourite. As the pictures are so detailed the children are able to explore what they can see in the pictures. Children are also able to use their imagination when reading this story and a discussion could occur around what they would do if they had a toy gorilla that came to life.
