Staunton Public Library discussion

So I have about 6 books on hold where every single copy is lost! What am I supposed to do about this. Will the library end up replacing the books?

I never noticed until the new catalog and I started doing holds more, but there are lots of lost books!! It's upsetting me, because I always replace or make restitution for books I lost and I am wondering if people aren't doing that or if there is just a delay between losing and replacement.

For some reason the problem seems more prevalent with Graphic Novels....Don't know why.

The Graphic novels get stolen some times...
But anyway, I have the same problem. I have a hold that's been on my card for about 2 years, I'm still number 2 in the queue list.

Maybe if we ask Kayla she can answer about getting things replaced. I would think having something on hold would mean there's a demand and they should replace it. Especially if it was payed for. Or do people just steal them off the shelves?

Maybe it would help to put up a sign or paper near the graphic novels. Something to the effect of 'Please stop stealing from us you soulless jerks (if slightly less rude, but seriously! Who steals from the library??)

I think the Technical Services department periodically goes through the records of lost books and we may replace after about 6 months or so, but things do slip through the cracks.

Keep the lost books on your holds queue and I will check your accounts to get an idea of what is missing.

What can be frustrating is that sometimes other libraries create whole new records for books, so even though one copy is lost, there could still be another record with available books, so I will check on that as well.

We are switching to a RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) security system this summer, which means that we will ACTUALLY have working security gates that will beep if people steal things. The process to put the new Radio Frequency tags is very time intensive, and would be a good volunteer project if you all are interested! More info at the next book group (May 28th) and/or TAB (June 1st)

Melissa mentioned the RFID at TAB this week. Definitely sounds like a good project for TAB members.

I have a lot of books with lost copies on hold but one of them just got cancelled.

I think I canceled Batman: Year One because our copy is missing, but there's a separate record showing that Waynesboro's copy is available. I put in to replace it as well as another Batman one that's on your list.

Great! It looked like Year One was being updated because the missing copies seemed to have been taken off the catalogue.

I got a huge list of recommendations from someone with all these Batman comics so I'm trying to get through those which is really what brought the lost books to my attention. I wonder why it's so much more prevalent with comics and graphic novels?

Comics and graphic novels tend to be easier to carry away, and the sections of comics tend to be in a non noticeable spot because the library is for books mainly, not comics.

Frances and I mentioned at book group last night that we should tape a speech bubble next to the Henry Cavill with him saying "STOP STEALING GRAPHIC NOVELS!" or something. :D

Haha that would be great! Though we might have to explain why we put that there so that non-theif people aren't scared away from the graphic novels :P

But I definitely think it's ironic that superhero books are stolen constantly
