Does everyone want to go ahead with this book for December or hold off until January?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm ready to read it. I just watched the film "Bright Young Things" and am ready to compare the two.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't mind. If you would rather hold off that's fine.

I'm just concerned that people will be too busy with Christmas preparations. Perhaps we should have a poll.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

A poll is a good idea. I forgot about Christmas! :)

Lol! I'm already beginning to feel pressure to shop for presents and prepare for hosting the clan of 22!

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

There are only 3 of us at my house for Christmas. We spend two days over the holidays watching Lord of the Rings, along with playing board games and building jigsaw puzzles! :)

Well it's my turn this year as we finally have a house big enough seat everyone for dinner - I hope!

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Jesus, 22, Gabriele! I thought 12 was a lot.

I generally read a lot over Christmas, but can understand why others would be really busy.

message 10: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 06, 2009 09:20AM) (new)

I'm getting all excited thinking about Christmas! TV and the computer are banned on Christmas Day, quite rightly I think, so I won't be on GR. Jeanette, I love playing board games. Scrabble is my favourite. Can't STAND LOTR however! Never fails to put me to sleep.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

I also am hoping to stay off of the internet -- at least on the days that my husband is home! Have fun feeding all of those people both of you! :)

message 12: by Suvi (new)

Suvi (orpheusbooks) Well, I have time for reading around Christmas time but I won't be on the internet that much either. I'll be eating, reading, eating, spending time with family members, taking it easy without uni stress and... possibly eating :P

message 13: by Gabriele (new)

Gabriele Wills (muskoka) | 526 comments Mod
And don't forget lashings of wine! : )

message 14: by Suvi (new)

Suvi (orpheusbooks) Oh of course :P How could I forget??

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

All of the above -- including cookies and fudge!

Oh, Lauren, we do a two-day LotR marathon and I still cry at the end! Gets me in the mood to read the books in February! :)

message 16: by Lee (new)

Lee (leekat) I love doing a huge jigsaw puzzle over the holidays!

Lee wrote: "I love doing a huge jigsaw puzzle over the holidays!"

I get a new one for Christmas every year! Yay!

message 18: by Suvi (new)

Suvi (orpheusbooks) I've never understood why people glue jigsaw puzzles on cardboard! Off topic, I know :P It's just incomprehensible, I love when you can smash it and do it again sometime.

Suvi wrote: "I've never understood why people glue jigsaw puzzles on cardboard! Off topic, I know :P It's just incomprehensible, I love when you can smash it and do it again sometime."

I make my favorites over and over again! But, I still like getting a new one every year!

message 20: by Suvi (new)

Suvi (orpheusbooks) I only have one so far :( A globe puzzle would be interesting. You know, the one that has a brown old fashioned map. Or one of those gigantic famous painting (Mona Lisa, Last Supper) ones.

People glue them?!? Really? Interesting.

We try to get a new puzzle from Ravensberger every year, but I haven't been brave enough to do the 5000 piece model yet!

They glue and frame them, like artwork.

Yeah, that's sounds really daunting. Usually those which have lots of large areas with only one colour are the hardest.

message 25: by Lee (new)

Lee (leekat) Now I'm inspired to request a big puzzle for Christmas. It's been so long since I've done one and now my daughter's old enough that she won't eat the pieces LOL!

Get her started, too! :)

message 27: by Suvi (new)

Suvi (orpheusbooks) It's also really interesting when a cat throws herself onto the puzzle and spreads the pieces around the floor :P

I got a picture of a swiss chalet, with lots of green pasture, blue sky and a bit of stacked wood, a few cows. All the pieces were pretty much square (they all fit together). I never finished it!

I hate when that happens. They should make the puzzles so that there's not a lot choices where the pieces go.

message 30: by Paula (new)

Paula I love this group - I clicked on the discussion for Vile Bodies and ran into a thread on puzzles!! I love puzzles, too! Actually, it's become a hobby for my boyfriend and I in the winter (our winters can get pretty nasty). We turn on random music, grab a bottle of wine, and end up staying up late to work on a puzzle. I always thought we were just a dorky couple, but now I know we're not alone!! :)

Note to self - ask for more puzzles for Xmas this year!

SarahC (sarahcarmack) | 220 comments I realized only recently that Margaret Drabble's latest novel relates to the jigsaw puzzle. You folks might find this interesting. Here are a couple of links. I have her book on my Christmas wish list! Jeannette, you may have read her, or at least seen her name on the preface of some Jane Austen novels.

I won "lunch with a librarian" as part of the summer reading progam at the local library this year. They recommended this book to me (with a very good review, since they know my tastes). Thank you for reminding me!

I started puzzling over Thanksgiving back in my single and boyfriendless years (I've been married 17 years today). Stayed in my jammmies on Friday and Saturday and puzzled all day and night.

It is cold here in Iowa, too, so everyone helps build the new puzzle!

DJ (djdivaofjava) Happy Anniversary Jeanette!

Please don`t hate me,Christmas is organised even finished all my cards on Friday, but I would probably think it would be a good idea to read VILE BODIES in January as it would be a perfect Detox after Christmas!

message 38: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 07, 2009 03:01PM) (new)

Hi DJ! I'm jealous -- you have a picture with K-9!

(Oh, and you're finished with your cards!)

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you everyone for the well-wishes! My daughter cooked us a nice dinner and I bought my husband a new game for the Wii, which we played until 11pm. :)

message 40: by Jane (new)

Jane (janeausten) | 16 comments I am so enjoying this site and also have enjoyed reading about your holiday plans and traditions. I had almost forgotten what fun it is to do a puzzle and am planning on pulling out a few of my old ones this year. I lost my husband in June and my children live too far to be with me so it will be nice to have puzzle to do in addition to reading books I am saving for this occasion.

Oh, Jane, how very sad! I do hope you find some joy in the season, so your plans do sound comforting.

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello Jane. Let's us know how you are doing over the holidays! It's hard to be alone, so I hope you'll enjoy your books and your puzzles and "chatting" with all of us, too!

Thank you all so much. I look forward to your comments and feel I am finding "friends" who share my love of "between the wars" books.

Exactly. Even though none of us know each other it's comforting to know that there are people behind the screen always willing to help.

So, are we set to do the Vile Bodies discussion in January instead?

message 47: by Gabriele (new)

The poll ends Friday, but right now the overwhelming majority prefer to start in January.

message 48: by SarahC (new)

SarahC (sarahcarmack) | 220 comments Sorry, I still didn't realize there was a poll! I voted!

message 49: by Gabriele (new)

The poll shows up at the bottom of the page. Not sure if I can make it come up earlier - ???

message 50: by SarahC (new)

SarahC (sarahcarmack) | 220 comments No, I don't think it will post at the top either. I just never think to scroll down to the bottom!
