I'm feeling really embarrassed about my TBR right now. I have something like 60 unread books on my shelf and the idea of ever getting through them all seems hopeless. I need to do an unhaul, I think, or just ACTUALLY forbid myself from getting new books... but we all know how well that usually works.

How big is your TBR?

message 2: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Gibson (pandamel) My tbr is at about 40 physical books. I have quite a few ebooks as well and an obsession with checking out ebooks and audio books from my local library.

message 3: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauralor) | 7 comments Adding up all my physical and ebooks (some from NetGalley which I should really really get on to) I have about 65 books to read. But that's not including my To Be Re-Read pile, or any books that I've yet to buy from a series in my TBR.
It's incredibly frustrating because I'm aware I hoard books and I'm trying not to buy any more, but then Diana Gabaldon goes and releases a boxset of the first four Outlander books. So far I've demonstrated a lot of self restraint... not sure how much longer that'll last though.

message 4: by Colin (new)

Colin Barrow | 37 comments For books that I have here at home, my TBR is probably in the mid-20s. I have lots of stuff in storage though and if I included unread books from there, my TBR would definitely be up over 40.

I'm having to read a lot of stuff for university just now and that tends to put me off reading for pleasure. This means my TBR pile isn't shrinking at all. I'm managing to keep reading comics/graphic novels but that just gives me new series that I want to keep up with and doesn't help the TBR

message 5: by Krysta (last edited May 12, 2015 07:35PM) (new)

Krysta Oh man. I own about 50 books (ebooks + physical) that have yet out of like... 200 or so total books I own?? I used to feel really bad about it until I watched BookRiot's video about TBR guilt, she really brought up some interesting points I'd never thought about! While I think I'll eventually do an unhaul at some point in time I no longer feel bad for having plenty of unread books.

message 6: by Julia (new)

Julia (jshubler) My TBR shelves have about 60 books as well. I'm trying not to feel guilty about it, since I know I will read them eventually. Browsing at the bookstore is a really soothing activity for me when I'm feeling stressed, so I feel ok not forbidding myself buying more. At least as long as I have shelves to fit the books...

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't know how many books I own that I haven't read. Probably about 100. Yikes. But it is nice to know I have quite a selection here at home because I live in a small town and the nearest book store is a couple hours away.

message 8: by Finbarr (new)

Finbarr (fionnbharr) | 10 comments My TBR is just over 950 physical books and I've no clue how many ebooks and audiobooks I have! And I don't feel guilty at all: as long as I'm able to pay my bills and everyday expenses then I'm quite happy to keep buying books.

message 9: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa Dawson (adladybug) | 17 comments I think my is near about 120. I have no idea of the actual number but I know my TBR jar is overflowing. I'm on a book buying ban to control my book buying. It's not really going too well yet but I've only bought two books in the last month and I've read one of them already so I guess it's actually going pretty well

message 10: by Annie (new)

Annie I literally just counted all my TBR books today and I have about 220. I knew it was a lot but that was crazy for me. However, I don't feel too bad about it because I get through the fiction novels rather quickly when I'm not at school and the rest are huge non-fiction tombs that I know will be useful in the future. Plus when I look for books to read there are so many options which I find comforting, because I can fill any book craving.

message 11: by Sleepover137 (new)

Sleepover137 I own over 800 books (about 220 are manga though) and I think currently there are 380 books on my TBR (about 80 are manga). That is a lot but that also means that I own more than 400 books that I have read ^^ I might be doing an unhaul of some of them though if I can see that I won't read them at all or didn't like them. for now I have enough space so I'm fine.

message 12: by Vanya (new)

Vanya | 3 comments I am actually very proud to say that my TBR consists of 9 books! I am even allowing myself to buy new ones this summer vacation :-) But I never owned too many books to begin with, so I guess that's why my TBR is so small.

message 13: by Alexandre (new)

Alexandre López calvo | 7 comments Around 30 unread physical books are lying on my shelf doing nothing. Anyway it has been around that number for half a year and I'm still buying any book that feels appealing so I think I reached a stable point...

message 14: by April Sarah (new)

April Sarah | 6 comments I think at present my TBR sits around 260 books. These are all books I own and need to still read. but since it sit at about 15% of the books I own I don't feel bad. Plus it gives me options when my moods are weird.

Kristina Horner (kristinahorner) | 111 comments Mod
I feel so much better knowing some of your TBRs are way bigger than mine, and I'm impressed by the lack of book guilt some of you feel! I think as long as you have shelf space, it's not so bad.

message 16: by Ellie (new)

Ellie Taylor My TBR consists of about 55 physical books and 65 digital books. It used to cause me quite a bit of anxiety, especially because of how frequently I keep buying new ones/adding to the wishlist of stuff that I don't own. I think it depends on how you look at it though. For instance, I bought the entire collection of Wizard of Oz books digital for 99c on amazon, and after reading one, realized that I hate the series and will never continue it. So that checks off like 12 books. And at one point I'd gone through the free categories on ibooks and downloaded about 35 free indie books. Some of them I've enjoyed, but honestly 9 times out of 10 I open one up, read three pages see that it's nothing I'm interested in and then delete it. I suspect that of the digital books I own, I could unhaul about 45 of them without guilt and be no worse for wear. As far as physical books go space is an issue so I've developed three methods of dealing with it. I only buy physical books if A) it's used/super cheap B) it looks so good I'm going to start reading before I've left the bookstore and usually finish it within 48hrs, C) I've already read it and need to own it. I'm a big fan of unhauling stuff that I won't reread and using the funds to purchase more books that I know I want in my life library, so I've been focusing on reading new things via library, Oyster app (netflix for books), or amazon daily deals, and only spending the cold hard cash for things I am absolutely sure I need.

But really books are meant to be enjoyed. Even if it takes you a few years to get around to something, just enjoy the fact that you'll never be bored, and you have so many adventures stacked up on your shelves. :)

message 17: by Ava (new)

Ava I only own about 20 books I haven't read, both physical and ebook. I tend to be pretty good at reading the pile down and then buying another 5-10 books. Now, my list of books I want to read is nasty, a couple hundred books.

message 19: by Ellie (new)

Ellie Taylor This inspired me to go through my TBR which was actually far worse than I'd previously thought, topping in at about 180 books. After unhauling and deleting the things I don't care to read, I officially have an owned TBR of 91 books.

message 20: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Froio (nicolefroio) | 2 comments I don't really understand why having a long TBR list is a bad thing, it's always good to have something to look forward to <3

message 21: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine | 7 comments I have 76 books on my TBR list, but about six of them are 6 of them are anthologies so I'm not sure how many that puts me up to considering one is Shakespeare. I'm going to estimate about 96.

It's not nasty at all, it just means you have lots of interests. :)

message 23: by Karen (new)

Karen | 5 comments I own TONS of unread books but I don't really feel embarrassed or guilty about it! I tend to buy books very thriftily so if I find cheap books, I'll get them if they look interesting... sometimes I read them and sometimes I don't. I hope to maybe read all of my books eventually but I honestly don't mind too much if I never do. I like the aesthetic and feeling of having tons of books in my bedroom. And it's kind of like I live in a library... I have access to all my favorites if I want them for whatever reason, but I also have a wide range of new stories that I have the option to read whenever I want. It's really hard for me to force myself to read something I don't feel like reading, so I have no desire to make myself to go through my shelves just BECAUSE they're unread. I would rather read a book because it compels me to read it on its own. And I'm not going to punish myself by avoiding other new books in the mean time. I don't think there's more value in owning a book you've read than a book you haven't!

I definitely understand putting a restriction on yourself if you truly don't have the budget or space to buy new books. But if neither of these are affecting you, then I say do what you want!

message 24: by Alex (new)

Alex (lovegrimeyxx) Mine's about 30 at the moment, so I'm pretty happy with that - especially because I'm still excited to read them all :)

message 25: by Lizzy (new)

Lizzy Books I own that I haven't read...? Like 60....and it keeps growing......send help

message 26: by Lizzy (new)

Lizzy The thing is I can't bring myself to unhaul. Everything I have I want to at least TRY and read....they're all so precious to me. A while ago I took out a bunch of books from my bookshelf that I'd already read and didn't like or that I no longer had interest in reading and put them in my garage...and recently I went and retrieved most of them because I wanted them back in my bookshelf...I'm so weak.

message 27: by Maddison (new)

Maddison (maddeyeh) | 18 comments ohhhhhh TBR. The last time I counted it was somewhere around 40... but now I would guess that it's somewhere between 50 and 70. The books on my bookshelf in my apartment in my college town are what consist of my entire TBR pile and it just keeps growing. I have more books than the English major that I live with. I just can't help myself when I see a book that I want to read.

message 28: by Abby (new)

Abby (abcadab) | 36 comments I have probably over 100, NO SHAME

I love your outlook. Totally the way to go. :)

message 30: by Trini (new)

Trini | 14 comments My TBR is just over 50, including physical books and eBooks, most of which I haven't added to my to-read shelf on Goodreads yet...and that's not even including books that I want to read that I don't yet have. I have so many more books I want to read and/or buy D: Plus, most of them I chose to buy. Whoops.

message 31: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (cartwheelkristina) | 4 comments I have like 30 physical books, several on my ereader, and many that I want to read, but have yet to obtain

message 32: by Mat (new)

Mat | 41 comments Physical books on my shelf: 20

Goodreads list:40+ that aren't on my shelf

message 33: by Alice (new)

Alice (girlofyarn) uh....last count was 118 which includes a few partially read books. That's only physical books, I didn't count ebooks or the handful of audiobooks, or the freaking library books that I have checked out currently. Don't feel bad about your pile...it's only a problem when you have to move! Hahaha! :)

message 34: by Anna (new)

Anna (selirasa) | 2 comments on goodreads list: 36
physical books: 19

message 35: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (schwarznarr) | 7 comments WHELP... considering that I just bought 9 new books... We're nearing the 100 book mark of owned but not read.

My goodreads list is like, 450....

message 36: by Becka (new)

Becka Ramaglia | 20 comments I have 31 books unread that I want to read in my room. Unfortunately, that is not my book collection which is waiting for me to move and unpack. The amount of unread books I have could easily be crazy.

What's worse is that's not incorporating the books I have to read to complete series. Those I don't own and just usually borrow from the library. I would love to buy all my favorite books, I'm just not rich enough for that.

message 37: by Tyler-rose (new)

Tyler-rose (readingwithtylerrose) Of books I own? Probably between 70 and 100 books... But of the list of books I want to read... It's never ending... I really need to update my good reads...

message 38: by Emma (new)

Emma (goldguardie) | 6 comments This could vary for me...I have about 50 books on my shelves that I haven't read yet...but only about 20 of them that are on my "read soon" radar. I also have like...20 books in ebook form on my kindle and overdrive apps, and then like...5 library books, so I should probably read those sooner, too. Let's not even talk about the rereads I want to do--I didn't even find out that Clariel by Garth Nix existed until about a week ago and immediately bought it because I love/own the original Abhorsen trilogy, so naturally, I want to reread the whole set before I read Clariel. :p

message 39: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Miller | 1 comments I don't have that much books I haven't read in my collection. less than 10. I wish I had more time to read and I would love to expand my TBR collection.

Tia (tiastravels) | 3 comments 8 or so I already own as physical books or eBooks, 45+ that I haven't purchased yet (and always adding!!)

message 42: by Zev (new)

Zev Bordowitz | 1 comments I've got around 150 that are on my TBR currently. I've been clearing it out recently, because some of those books are no longer appealing anymore.

message 43: by Tove (new)

Tove (tovemaria) | 6 comments Before summer started I had around 20 physical books in my bookshelf that I hadn't read, and my goal was to finish them all before summer holiday was over. Right now I have 5 books left, and about one and a half week left of the break. i don't think I'm going to succeed 100%, but I'm still really satisfied with all the books I've managed to read!

message 44: by Caroline (new)

Caroline (codexpotter) | 2 comments in the past month it went from 60 to 40 because I donated books I was no longer interested in tben back to 60 because I bought more books when I got a bonus at work.

message 45: by Brooke R. (new)

Brooke R. Busse (brookerbusse) | 2 comments Regarding the books I own, I finally sat down last night and made a complete list. Not counting books I cannot read yet because I don't have the books that come before and certain anthologies and counting books in the same series as one unit, I currently have 112. I'll have 118 when the books I ordered this week get here...

message 46: by Mafalda (new)

Mafalda Fernandes (aoutramafalda) Between my own books and few from my family I'm pretty sure my TBR is way more than 100 books. And this is just the physical ones, I'm not counting the audio books and the digital books.

message 47: by Noina (new)

Noina (noisynoina) I have more than 100 books I plan to read in the next few years, and the list grows with each visit I pay to Goodreads ;) Just at home, counting my mother's books I want to read, I must have 150 ! :D

message 48: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn (englishbrkfstt) | 2 comments I have probably 60ish physical books and maybe 50!ebooks on my TBR! Lots of work to do :)

message 49: by Sofía (new)

Sofía (sofivear) | 2 comments I have about 25 physical books that I consider my TBR. It has really grown in the past year! I'm more worried about the length of some of those books than by the amount of books though. I don't know when I'll get around to reading those few huge ones.
I have more books that I have little to no intention of reading. I'm not sure what to do with them. Most of them were gifts or prizes so I don't want to give them away, at least not for the time being.
And my "want to read" list on Goodreads is huge (about 200 books) buuuut that doesn't really mean anything, does it?

message 50: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 2 comments Literally my TBR is 4 books right now trying to get more books.
