⚠️ According to the GR system message received yesterday, sending DMs privately will not be possible from next week onwards. We will have no easy way to contact anyone. If you aren't chatty then we won't know if you are around and/or still playing.⚠️

PLEASE check in at least once per week, by posting in this thread.

If you will be away for a bit, no problem!! Please just let us know ahead of time when you will be away.

Angie ☯ | 1000 comments Hello everyone!! Welcome to Uno!

I'm Angie, one of your captains for this round of Uno. I believe this is my 9th round of Uno.

I live in East Tennessee, (Eastern time zone). Currently it is 17°F here....the coldest day of the year so far and I'm already over winter!!!

I work in the accounting/finance field... since forever! I'm a Raiders gal, even when they don't remember how to play football! Not sure who I will be cheering for this year.

Of course, I will read pretty much anything for challenges....even if I hate the genre!

I think I have been on other team challenges with about half of you; so looking forward to making new friends and playing with you all!!

Let's have some UNO fun!!

message 9: by Angie ☯ (new)

Angie ☯ | 1000 comments If any of you are new to Uno, feel free to ask as many questions as you'd like.

There will be rules and other helpful information posted in messages #3-#7 above.

The team will have access to the Tracking Spreadsheet (posted in msg #3 above). This is where all our books will be entered. Everyone should already have editing access; if not, please let us know. Feel free to start claiming spots on the SS whenever you are ready. Important note - SS Tetris could be used to ensure we cover all our cards. PLEASE let us know if you prefer we don't move your books from the card you have claimed.

If any of you are uncomfortable using a spreadsheet, just shout, and we will have you submit completion posts in this thread.

Andy (_btp) | 433 comments hi everyone

I'm Andy, 6th time with UNO, but I always manage to forget half of the rules

I'm in Limerick , Ireland

if experience with UNO has taught me anything, it's that I will read almost anything for a team challenge, especially if it can be sourced in time through the library

I think Vicki is the only team member I've already met in a challenge team before, looking forward to meeting everyone and getting into the challenge

Jenny | 2374 comments Hi all!
I am Jenny, the other captain for Deep Purple.

So, how many of you have "Smoke on the water" stuck in your head on repeat? Just me?

Anyway, I am in Phoenix, where it was 80 degrees yesterday. Yuck. Those of you who are too cold, feel free to send some of that weather my way.
I am a custom picture framer, have two lovely kitties (one of which woke me up this morning with the sounds of a hairball being, um, made), and I still love my Packers, even though they let those stupid Bears bet them in the playoffs. Sigh.

I will absolutely read anything for a challenge, and I have the scars to prove it.

Looking forward to good books and good company!

Angie ☯ | 1000 comments Hi Andy!
Nice to "meet" you!

message 13: by Vicki (last edited Jan 16, 2026 12:18PM) (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 520 comments Hello Deep Purple Teammates. I am SO excited to start this round of UNO with an amazing captain and co-captain! I am thrilled to be on this team! Just FYI purple is my favorite color too. :)

I will be in Hawaii for my birthday when the challenge starts, returning home on Feb. 4. So if I appear to be MIA those few days that's where I will be.

My first UNO challenge was in 2019 and I was hooked! This will be my 8th year playing it. I would be SO upset if I missed out on it.

Angie, OH NO! RAIDERS? We are 49ers fans. But, I love you anyway and I forgive you. lol

I live in the central valley California (PST zone). I am a retired high school teacher. I taught English for 25 years, yearbook for 18, and multicultural literature for 5. I also taught reading and writing proficiency in summer schools for about 8 or 9 years.

I am happily married, have 5 children (3 girls, 2 boys), 22 grandchildren (12 boys, 10 girls), and 8 great grandkids (5 boys, 3 girls). Yes, I have a busy life. Maybe that will help explain why I can't remember a thing anymore except my own name. lol And I can't forget to add our crazy Daisy! She's a 2 year-old Havanese dog. She keeps us in stitches! lol

I am excited to go see the SS now and begin adding my books! YIPPEE!

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 520 comments Andy, it's been a while, right? It's good to be on a team with you again. :)

I have known Angie and Jenny for quite some time and had the pleasure of meeting Jenny in person a couple months ago when we went to Phoenix to visit our granddaughter, her hubby, and their two children.

I don't know any of the rest of you on our team, but I am looking forward to getting to know you all. :)

Jenny | 2374 comments Hi Vicki!
Hi Andy!

Looking forward to this one!

message 17: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 520 comments *Waves* back at Jenny. :)

For the color books, do you want us to give a TinEye % or just post them under the color and then you caps will check?

message 18: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2374 comments That second one. I would say to only use TinEye if your book is borderline 50% by sight.

message 19: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 520 comments Okay, thanks.

message 20: by Angie ☯ (new)

Angie ☯ | 1000 comments Well, Vicki....
I've been a Raiders gal for a really long time...I even remember when they knew how to play and win...they were in Oakland then! LOL

message 21: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 520 comments Angie, LOL one of my daughters is a HUGE Raiders fan and her husband is a 49ers fan. They have a flag outside their home that says, "House Divided" and 1/2 is the Raiders and 1/2 is the Niners. It's all good. lol

message 22: by Tatiana (new)

Tatiana Davis | 68 comments Hello everyone! It’s been a few years since I’ve played UNO. I recognize Angie, Jenny and Ashley from previous years. Hello again! I am a social worker and located in New York outside of NYC. We are currently experiencing a very snowy weekend. Hoping to go tubing/snowboarding with my 4 kids tomorrow. Looking forward to getting started!

message 23: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2374 comments Snow! I sometimes miss snow.

Hi again Tatiana!

message 24: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Karczewski (ashleylorna) | 156 comments Hi everyone! I’m Ashley, 31, and I live in Newcastle in the North East of England. I’ve played UNO a few times before, but I think the last time was back in 2019, so I’m really excited to get back into it and get to know you all.

I work in the NHS as a Fraud Assistant, which is a relatively new role for me, but I’m finding it really interesting and enjoying it so far.

For the challenge, I’m always happy to pick up and try any genre needed and I’m always open to recommendations, so feel free to send any my way! I’m definitely a mood reader, so you’ll often see me reading multiple books at once, across different genres!

message 25: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2374 comments Hi Ashley!

This is going to be fun.

It seems that we have quite a few adventurous readers amongst us! We will crush whatever tasks they throw our way.

message 26: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2374 comments It looks like we are only waiting on Phœbe to complete our team.

message 27: by Angie ☯ (new)

Angie ☯ | 1000 comments Hi Tatiana and Ashley!

message 28: by Phœbe (new)

Phœbe | 29 comments Hi everyone! Sorry for checking in a little late :) I'm Phœbe, 26, and I'm German/British, currently living in the U.K. I have participated in the UNO challenge a couple of years ago and also found myself reading a lot of genres I wouldn't typically reach for. I love being able to discuss books and pick up recommendations from other group members :) My favourite genres are typically dystopian, speculative fiction and modern literature, with authors like Donna Tartt and Ted Chiang among my favourites, but I have been convinced to pick up a fantasy book here and there.

I look forward to getting started with you guys! :)

message 29: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2374 comments Hi Phœbe!
It sounds like we might have some books in common on our read shelves. We need to exchange recommendations for sure.

And we are all here!!!!!!

message 30: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2374 comments Anyone have any issue accessing or using the tracking spreadsheet?

Link is in message 3.

Since there are not a lot of us on the team, and there are no book caps, any of us can go on a reading tear if we want to.

If anyone is particularly attached to keeping their books where they put them on the spreadsheet, please speak up now. We captains tend to play a lot of book Tetris towards the end of a round to make sure all the books can get used, and we don't want to make people upset if we move stuff around.

Remember to check your shelves for those lovely color covers!!!

that feels like a lot.

if anyone has recommendations of books they loved recently?

message 32: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2374 comments I will make a list today of books of different genres that I loved recently. And then maybe a list of books that I just love overall.

Anyone else who wants to add to our collective TBRs by listing recommendations, have at it!!!!

I need coffee first though. Good morning, and good afternoon to you all!

message 33: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Karczewski (ashleylorna) | 156 comments Hi Jenny, I can access the spreadsheet and I’m all good for you to move anything of mine that I add as required! :)

I was planning to just add as I go once I’ve finished or close to finishing a book, is that okay? Or is it preferred to claim spots ahead of time?

message 34: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Karczewski (ashleylorna) | 156 comments I’ll also look to compile a list of some recommendations to make things easier :)

And good afternoon to you too Jenny! It’s 1:35pm where I am so I’m already on my third coffee hehe

Angie ☯ | 1000 comments Ashley wrote: "I was planning to just add as I go once I’ve finished or close to finishing a book, is that okay? Or is it preferred to claim spots ahead of time?..."

Ashley, that is perfectly okay!

The color cards and reverse cards require a little extra planning, so we try to claim those.

If anyone adds a book that you have read - let us know or add a note on the SS that you've read.

Also, you can let us know when you start a book that would fit a color cover. This way we have some options, if we need to move things around.

Angie ☯ | 1000 comments Andy wrote: "◀️ Reverse (9)

I agree! These will likely be a work in progress.

In addition to recommendations, every one give a shout out if you see a book on the SS that you have previously read or plan to read during the round!

I will be stalking shelves as we go, too. 😄

message 41: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2374 comments I loved Regeneration. I have a hard time recommending it to people due to that one scene, which has stayed with me for over a decade now. But the setting, the characters, the reality of it all just moved me. Pat Barker is no slouch. I have liked her other books as well, but none of them got to me as much as that one did.

it certainly strips any romanticism from soldiers experience of war - do recall one visceral scene

message 43: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2374 comments Yup. That's the one.
I did read some of the poetry that was written by those guys as well. Some of it is just beautiful.
