message 1: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Entertainment Weekly listed this novel as one of the "new classics" in a special edition of the magazine, so I picked it up thinking it would be a quick, fun read. Instead, I read one of the worst novels of all-time, that not only had huge plot holes, but also some of the worst characters to ever grace the pages of a book. Not one of them is believable, and I found myself wishing them all dead. I lived in Mexico, people. You just don't go traipsing around the jungle on a hiking excursion with tequila, some grapes, and a Power Bar. With people who don't speak the same language as you. Using a map that doesn't exactly tell you where you are going. Persisting even though the locals warn you repeatedly about your destination.

I am sure Lisa can remember the really funny postings from our other group about this book. It got so sarcastic, I can't even begin to recreate my character descriptions and plot analysis. Scott Smith should be ashamed of himself, EW should be ashamed it itself, and I am definitely ashamed of myself for reading the entire thing. I gave it two stars ONLY because it had my attention enough to keep me going. I think I actually THREW the book on the table when I was done.
