Annalisa | 1743 comments Welcome to team Emerald Eyes! Welcome I can't wait to get to know you all and to play some UNO.

Please introduce yourself in your first post. Let us know if this is your first time playing UNO or if you have played before, where you are from, and what you genres you enjoy reading. You can also post a few favorite reads and if you feel like it the worst book you read last year. (I always find it really interesting to see what people hate.) Also, somewhere in that post please post a link to your Uno shelf.

Bonus question had you heard the song Emerald Eyes before?

I’m going to be sending out friend requests to all of you. Please accept those. It makes it a lot easier for me to check your books throughout the month. You may also want to send friend requests to the rest of the team as it will make it much easier to find reverse cards.

Annalisa | 1743 comments I'm so excited to for UNO to start and to get to know you all more. I'm Annalisa and this is my 10th year playing and my 6th year as a captain. Please feel free to ask any questions you have as I remember my first year was a little confusing.

I’m from the mountains of Western North Carolina in the US. I have a 5 month old so expect me to be around at odd hours. Unfortunately we still have not figured out good sleep habits. I'm really looking to chatting with adults since many of my interactions now are baby related.

I enjoy reading historical romance, scifi romance, fantasy romance, fantasy, and science fiction. I’m pretty much willing to read any genre although I’m not much for horror.

My favorite books from 2025 were:
Water Moon by Samantha Sotto Yambao . I liked that the story was an easy read but it wasn't just fluff without feeling.
How to Change Your Mind What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence by Michael Pollan This had so many interesting facts about psychedelics like some tribes used gave them to their dogs before hunting since it would heighten their sense of smell.
Citybound (Millennial Mage #9) by J.L. Mullins This isn't the best book in the series but I've been really loving the Millennial Mage series and this one didn't disappoint. I love the characters so much. I think some of it is the slice of life style of writing that I enjoy.

My least favorite book from 2025 was Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas . I think that the dark academia genre just isn't for me. I just DFNed another book in this genre and I can't remember the last time I didn't finish a book.

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 443 comments hiiiiiii everyone! so so excited to be playing again this year! My name is Sarah and I live in Michigan in the US.

This is my 9th year playing Uno. The last two years were a bit rough for me because of life circumstances so I wasn't able to participate as much as usual so I am really really excited to go full out this year. I had so many favorite books last year but I know my least favorite was Onyx Storm, 100%. I didn't DNF as much as I usually prefer to last year but I was really disappointed in this one.

I found some new authors last year though that wrote some of the most enjoyable books of the year for me, B.K. Borison & Emma Hamm!

uno shelf for this year

Upton | 70 comments Hey everyone! Nice to meet you all. I am Upton and I from Minnesota and this is my 3rd year playing UNO. I am on at all different hours including a lot of late nights. I read most genres and prefer thrillers, mysteries, and non-fiction. I don't really care for romances and science fiction, but I will read almost anything for a challenge.

The book I disliked the most last year was Immoral.

My UNO-2026 shelf.

message 13: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1743 comments Welcome Sarah and Upton

Sarah, I really enjoyed the Lovelight series by B K Borison. I think I have a hold on the last book in the series from my library so might get to read that during Uno.

Upton, any particular nonfiction type of of book you prefer? I have really loved David Grann up to his latest book The Wager which wasn’t as interesting but The Lost City of Z was fascinating.

message 14: by Emily (last edited Jan 18, 2026 04:34AM) (new)

Emily | 78 comments Hi everybody! I’m Emily. I live in Cape Town, South Africa so a very different time zone to most of you! I think this is my fourth or fifth year doing the UNO challenge.

My favourite book that I read last year was Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

My UNO 2026 shelf

message 15: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1743 comments Welcome Emily. I haven’t read Atmosphere but I really liked Daisy Jones and the Six. If you have read both how does Atmosphere compare?

message 16: by LaurLa (new)

LaurLa | 1072 comments Hi All - I'm LaurLa and I'm from central Indiana, near Indianapolis. I read romance almost exclusively but will pick up what is needed for the sake of a challenge... but please please don't ask me to read horror! I don't know how many years this is for me with Uno but probably around 5 or 6 or more...

@Annalisa - I have family that live in western North Carolina, near Murphy, NC if you know whereabouts that is. It's beautiful country!!

Looking forward to some fun Uno reading!

Dominique Thomas | 51 comments Hello everyone! I'm Dominique. I am from Cheyenne WY. I am a dispatcher for the highway patrol so I sometimes have a lot of down time and also work odd hours. I mainly read horror/mystery/thriller as of late but I read a lot of romance on my kindle as well! This is my 3rd year playing Uno I believe and I am excited for this new round to begin!
Unfortunately, I dont think any of the books I read last year were memorable enough for me to mention but I am striving for better books in 2026!

KayLynn Zollinger (kaylynnskorner) | 390 comments Trying this again. Tried to post several times but Goodreads keeps erroring out. You know what they say, 5th times the charm...

Hi everyone! I'm KayLynn, your co-captain. This is my third time playing UNO and my first time with co-captain pants on. I'm from Utah in the United States. I'm a stay at home mom with a neurodivergent child with adhd/autsim and we do an online school program for her so I have a lot of time to listen to audiobooks or have Alexa read me my ebooks.

I will read pretty much anything I can get my hands on but my most read genres are romance, fantasy and thrillers. I read sci-fi and horror the least but I have been known to wade in those pools too from time to time.
I've read a lot of good books this past year but I think I'll bring up the entire Dresden Files series because it's on my mind since the next book comes out in just two days!! The entire series is magic (both in my heart and in the story). Highly recommend.

Annalisa | 1743 comments Welcome everyone!

@LaurLa yes I know where Murphy is. That’s about as far west in the state as you can go and about 2 hours from where I am in Asheville. I think I’ve been to Murphy once but it has been a while so I can’t say I remember it. The area is so pretty out that way.

@ Dominique As a dispatcher do you ever find ourself feeling like you are a player in a mystery/thriller novel? I don’t think I could read horror/mystery/thriller if I was in your line of work.

@KayLynn do you have any favorite audiobook narrators? Or any books you would highly recommend on audio? I’ve been listening to more audiobooks while I’m with my little one at odd hours. I’ve really enjoyed John Lee and Kevin Free. It’s been quite a while but I listened to the part of the How to Train Your Dragon series and that was narrated by David Tenet which was fun to listen to. As a bonus all the audiobooks in the series have nice color covers.

yes!! that series is so so good. I just recently read the 4th book and def. recommend it!

for audiobook narrators, I know you didn't ask me but I love Julia Whelan! her narration style is fantastic. also, I read both Daisy Jones and the Six and Atmosphere and while I did like Atmosphere better, it is a very different read and both are really good!

can't wait to play with y'all this year !

message 22: by KayLynn (last edited Jan 20, 2026 12:53PM) (new)

KayLynn Zollinger (kaylynnskorner) | 390 comments Narrators. Oh man!
I love a good celebrity narrator. Zachary Quinto narrates some for John Scalzi (The Dispatcher. So good!)
Wil Wheaton also narrates quite a few books and he does a great job. I've listened to him do The Martian and Starter Villain. I'm biased here though, because I grew up watching Star Trek so it pushes all the nostalgia buttons too.
Stephen Fry narrates his own Greek mythology books. I could listen to him talk alllll day.
Travis Baldree is fantastic. He narrates his own books (Legends & Lattes series) but he was a narrator before an author so he has a ton of books under his belt.
I love Rebecca Soler. She narrated The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer and The Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros.
I recently listened to Masquerade by O.O. Sangoyomi and thought Ariel Neema Blake knocked it out of the park. I plan to find more by her.

I'm sure there are more but those are the ones that come immediately to mind.
I haven't read How to Train Your Dragon but I love David Tennant in all things, so I think I'm going to need to check that out.

message 23: by Dominique (new)

Dominique Thomas | 51 comments @ Annalisa - tbh I haven't struggled too much with reading horror/thriller/mystery with my job. I know bad stuff happens to everyone and equally bad things happen to people in books but i have gotten really good at compartmentalizing! I also find myself picking apart books thats deal heavily with law enforcement since I "know what its like". Havent met a book that messed me up too bad though!

I read the Lost City of Z and enjoyed it. I like non-fiction books about adventure and survival, but I read a lot of non-fictions in general. Whatever grabs my attention.

Annalisa | 1743 comments Hi All, Thank you for checking in and for the recommendations on audiobook narrators.

Here is a tracking sheet where you can add the books you are reading and what they fit for as you go. If you are not good with spread sheets there is an example of a completion post in the first few posts here. Even if you are using the tracking sheet please check in here once a week even if you have not finished a book. The first columns of the SS, that are filled red at the top, are for captains/co-captains.

https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...
Only books started after the timer reaches zero will count for Uno.

We have our cards for February. It doesn't look that bad for color cards. We have 8 total and an additional 5 with the Wild Draw 4s we have that will duplicate one of the color cards. We got mostly Blue which I have found get covered easily. We do have two yellow cards. If you have a book you are planning to read that fits one of the color cards please let us know you are claiming it. Additionally we have 12 Reverse cards so those recommendations of books above might come in handy.

February Color Cards
Yellow 0
Yellow 6 - LaurLa

Blue 3

do you recommend Stephen Fry? I am back on my mythology obsession (it ebbs and flows every few years). is he super dry?

and I hope that everyone is safe as well :) we got about 5 inches and other than having to shovel a few times nothing wild over here.

KayLynn Zollinger (kaylynnskorner) | 390 comments Sarah wrote: "do you recommend Stephen Fry? I am back on my mythology obsession (it ebbs and flows every few years). is he super dry? "

I've only ever read his mythology books, not his other humor books, but I really enjoyed them. He is really rather witty (his humor can be snarky but I like that) and I find the way he tells the stories enjoyable. He also definitely tells the adult version of the myths, so if that level of graphic details will bother you, be aware. I've only read the first three and will most likely read the newest one during this challenge as it will work rather smashingly for a blue cover. But yeah, I would recommend.

message 31: by KayLynn (new)

KayLynn Zollinger (kaylynnskorner) | 390 comments For those asking about narrators - I just listened to Can't Spell Treason Without Tea and the narrator was incredible. Jessica Threet. I had never heard her before but she apparently did the dramatized versions of Red Rising and Pestilence. She also does a ton of Lit RPG style books. I may have to read more of that genre simply because I enjoyed her so much.

message 32: by LaurLa (new)

LaurLa | 1072 comments I can read Yellow 6 with Take a Hint, Dani Brown - character Sorcha
Take a Hint, Dani Brown (The Brown Sisters, #2) by Talia Hibbert

or this one is a #6 but might not be yellow enough
Dark Taste of Rapture (Alien Huntress, #6) by Gena Showalter

I can also take the Red #9 - character Noah
Run to Me (Last Chance Rescue, #3) by Christy Reece

message 33: by Annalisa (new)

KayLynn Zollinger (kaylynnskorner) | 390 comments I think I'll start with The Amalfi Curse by Sarah Penner . Apparently it's about sirens. I had no idea what it was about, just thought the cover was pretty and it's the book of the month for another group. I'm also listening to Voice of the Ocean by Kelsey Impicciche with my family on our roadtrip we are currently on. Two siren books at the same time is both unusual and awesome.
Extra bonus - I think both books work for blue?

Annalisa | 1743 comments Anyone can update the tracking sheet so it is really your preference if you add to the SS for tracking or not. If you use the tracking sheet you can just post that you finished a book with the book you finished letting us know it is on the SS. That way if anyone sees a book they read they can note it for reverses.
