Happy New Year, everyone! What is everyone up to this year, reading or otherwise? Do you guys make resolutions? I don't 😅 I know myself, and I know I won't stick to them 😂

No resolutions for me. Reading wise, just to keep enjoying good books and maybe read more of what I own. Would be nice to get back to reading more physical books.

message 3: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1861 comments Reading wise just continue reading whatever takes my fancy: I've read less the last couple of years but feel I've enjoyed more of what I have read so trying to continue the trend of quality over quantity-though reading more is always nice!
Personally, I have quite a few fun things to look forward to: going to the Commonwealth Games in Scotland, got a big 30th birthday trip to Europe in September to organise, will be seeing lots of theatre as usual I'm sure, hopefully will be a good year.

Reading whatever the mood calls for is always a good plan. Lol. And your birthday trip sounds so exciting, Jo!

Brittany I am in the same boat as you. I need to do a better job of reading the books I already own. I just use my library so much that sometimes they just have to take a backseat 😅

message 7: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1808 comments I also don't set any huge plans or resolutions. I always have some goals in mind, but let them be flexible.

Reading wise I'm in the minority, who wants to read less but be more careful when picking what to read. I strive for more quality books than the count. Also turned out that I really enjoy re-reading books, but as I'm learning German - in German obviously.

As for my technical, nerdy self, I want to learn more about AI with the implementation focus (meaning the technical side) and be consistent with learning.

And now to the personal. I fell in love with journaling and planning on paper. I've been very consistent with this for the past 2 months and want to keep this habit. Very beneficial for almost everything, from stress relief to getting unblocked when you spiraling about yet another challenge.

Finally, the overall year topic is relaxation, especially in the hobby areas like books or puzzles, sometimes I take hobbies too seriously to the point when they stop being hobbies.

@Jo that travel plan sounds so interesting and exciting! Hope you'll have a quality and great time.

@Brittany @Lili I guess "reading more of what we own" is such a universal problem 😅

Elena, that is fair about resolutions. I'm the same way! And I absolutely love that you're prioritizing reading books that are better quality over quantity.

Best of success on all your endeavors this year, Elena 😊

I finally have my finger surgery tomorrow!! So I am either going to get all the reading done in the next couple weeks while I am off work or maybe actually watch some tv? No idea what the healing time actually looks like. Might try to go home for a bit. Will know more tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for an easy surgery and relatively painless heal.

Gord | 1070 comments Hopefully your surgery goes well today and you enjoy your recovery time.

Here was my few hours post surgery updates
I survived the surgery. Currently feel like crap

Also it was on hold for a bit after the nerve block was in. Right as I was to be wheeled into room fire alarm went off. Sprinkler/ pipe exploded and the ventilation stopped working

Almost threw up in the shoppers waiting for my drugs. But was otherwise okay for a bit.

Then had to hurry off the couch to the bathroom to dry heave and then lay on the bathroom floor cause it's cold.
This all sucks

6-18 more hours of this awful numb arm stuff. It feels like a furnace attached to my body.

Oh and I also dropped my arm on my face. Which is funny really

Right now, I finally got a bit of sleep. Arm is still numb. Could wake any time now. Hoping soon.

Elena Granger | 1808 comments @Brittany get better soon! At least you can actually do whatever you want during this time, hope at least something will give you some relief and joy, and eat all the tastiest foods, you deserve it ❤️

Woke up after my second nap this morning with no drugs in my system. That was a painful mistake. Arm was waking up at that point. Knew I was getting close when I was falling asleep but I was finally cozy and if I'd gotten up I'd have been awake.
Was a super weird feeling. Thumb was partially numb. Pointer and middle were mostly awake. Other two numb and angry. Wrist completely numb and still floppy. Inside elbow mostly not numb, outside mostly numb. The sensations were bizarre.

Now its mostly all awake and out of the sling which is nice. More bandage than I expected and it all stays on until my follow up Feb 10.

Quite a bit of pain, especially right before the next drug dose time. Crazy I only have 3 days of drugs. So I guess it should feel better soon. The opiods make me kinda sleepy.

Thanks! I will eat yummy things when my body feels up to it. Hopefully starting tomorrow. Currently not great at paying attention to much of anything but it'll get better.

Oh my, that sounds like a disaster! 😣 I am SO glad your surgery went well despite everything that happened. Maybe this will be a funny story to tell in the future (arm falling on your face and all) when the event is a bit more far removed. Lol.

I hope you have a speedy recovery! And stay on top of those pain meds, girl!

The pain meds betrayed me and made me dizzy and nauseous yesterday so I'm done with them. Pain I'll tolerate, wanting to puke not so much.
Arm falling on face was funny.

message 19: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1808 comments Wow, that definitely sounded like a disaster, but I hope now it feels good again!

Your follow up was today, Brittany? How did that go? I'm glad to hear you're feeling better for the most part, though!

Brittany | 6664 comments Mod
I'm cranky. I still have way too much numbness in my arm. Likely from the nerve block. I am so uncomfortable. I now have to keep my arm straight, especially when sleeping which pretty much means I don't sleep. Needs to be straight to not pinch the nerve any more. I also get sharp random nerve pain down the arm.

The good news from my follow up though is that it was a benign endochondroma. Plus it's healing well.

Basically I get to wait and see what happens. If it doesn't get better on its own in 4 weeks I'll go back in and talk with anesthesia and see what they say. I could have tried medication but it takes 4-6 weeks to help and the usual side effect is foggy brain and well I react to most meds so it sounded awful and the docs didn't really recommend it for me.

Liliana (lililostinabook) | 2999 comments Mod
That sounds uncomfortable, indeed. Happy to hear it's benign, though! I really hope it gets resolved without the medication!

I just put in a book order from bookoutlet.ca since their 7.99 sale ends tomorrow. Found some cheaper than that too so bonus! Looking forward to receiving a box of books!

Wish me luck. Back to work tomorrow with my numb painful arm. Thank goodness I have an amazing occ health person so at least I am going back for a 4 hour shift not 8. See how badly it goes tomorrow. I'll likely be calling the surgeons office after the shift. This burning and itching inside my arm is making me crazy. Although I have gotten an email reply from the surgeons office saying there is nothing to speed up the healing :(
