Happy New Year! I haven't started anything new (yet).
I'm reading Silent Nights: Christmas Mysteries. The stories are mostly interesting (just one that I was bored with so far) and a few of them are very good. I'm enjoying the stories.
I'm continuing with the audio of Fayne. Sadly, it has to be returned tomorrow because someone is waiting for it. I'll have to continue it when it's available again.
I started The End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light a few weeks ago. It started well and is interesting, but the Holidays began and I haven't gotten back to it. I will shortly.
now this is exciting...real time communication. But ohxoh i looked up Fayne and apparently I did not like it at all. Actually I loved Fall on Your Knees and dont remember this one.
The book on the dark sounds more interesting. I have read a similar themed book and apply some of what I learned automatically now.
I also started a fiction
(on the phone sorry no link) The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera
Happy New Year - when do we stop saying this !! Life is slowly gathering pace as is the reading, getting close for another book hunt in time for spring.
Hi all,Things in this country right now are so awful it's difficult to even post. My personal life is good.
Headed to Italy in February.
Currently working my way through Louise Penny's Quebec-based Gamache series. I just finished The Brutal Telling which was excellent and am now about halfway through Bury Your Dead which I like a little less (maybe because I'm finding it so sad) but which apparently I need to read in order to understand the next book in the series.
School is on break. I'm not going to take Greek next semester and only one class. I'm not sure what yet but probably a literature class of some kind.
I hope you are both well and not too cold
this is my 3rd time trying: just lost my last attempt attempting to add title. I will be briefer.Ellen, I can only imagine how awkward it must be, and frightening. It's hardly any solace, but you are not alone. Rebecca Solnit helps.
So do you speak Italian? And do you have an itinerary and pre bookings? My favourite place in Italy was Trieste.
This is a truncated version of yesterdays messageBriefly checking my phone in the morning and putting a hold on Sarah Dunants Blood & Beauty I noticed that Ellen was either reading or wanting to read that same book. I decided to wait and reply on the laptop so I could include links.
I was just finishing up In the Company of the Courtesan which I had actually listened to on Audio when I was recovering from dental surgery a few months back and enjoyed.
I am getting better with audiobooks but if I really like something I will order the book. When I finally got this last week, I thought it would be enough to skim for the points that I wanted clarified. I didn't even enter it on GR. First off I noticed how on the audio it's easy to miss how good the writing is. And then it became clear that I remembered only the characters and the rough outline of the plot. So I have enjoyed reading at a nice slow pace and naturally looked to see what else she has written.
All this to say that I looked everywhere for Ellens post and that's the odd bit, that even couldn't find it on her profile.
It's been so stormy I have not been outside since Friday. I have written a few reviews and focusing on only 2 books, the Courtesan one and Nine Quarters of Jerusalem by Matthew Teller. He is certainly offering a different perspective.Ice have you read Katabasis? I did love it while reading but The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera rather excels.
Petra I think it was you who recommended Mornings in Jenin. It's now on the bedside tbr soon
it feels like I am talking to myself here. what are folks up to?
Just lost the longer message I wrote
is this the end of it all?
You're not talking with yourself, Magdelanye. I pop in....although not often lately (Life issues; not this group). I haven't been reading a lot.
I'm still listening to Fayne on audio. It's so good...but I only listen while out for walks, so it's slow going. I'm about half done.
I'm currently reading The Married Girls. I enjoyed the first book, so continued the series. I'm enjoying this one, too.
I'll hopefully be able to get back here more regularly again soon.
Thanks Petra! It's always good to hear what you are up to.
I did get one of the books you seemed to enjoy, Just One Damned Thing After Another I got halfway through when I had had enough, it just did not grip me and there was another book I will have to return on Monday (they are both due Monday} so I jumped into that. Good decision. There is not enough time to spend on lacklustre books.
That said, I am not sure you (or Ice or Ellen} would have as much fun with this but I am finding this sequel We Love You, Bunny by Mona Awad even better than the first one.
Also reading Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest by Suzanne Simard which I am sure everyone would like.
In Yorkshire on holiday/flat hunting with a Yorkshire book Days Like Shadows Pass. A bit of snow and rain, time to read in front of a fire.

another year! It was a little thrill to see the amazing list GR produced for me and the great books that surely helped make a difficult year tolerable.
As we jump into it what are you reading?
I finished My seditious heart yesterday and today began Rebecca Solnit No straight Road Takes you There.
