Name: Dr. Kenneth Wayne DouglasFavorite Books: The Expanse series by James S.A. Corey (I love the gritty realism), Foundation by Asimov, and anything that mixes hard engineering with big stakes.
Favorite Genres: Space Opera, Hard Sci-Fi, and Techno-Thrillers.
Favorite TV shows: The Expanse (again, for the physics), For All Mankind, and Firefly.
Favorite Movies: Interstellar, Blade Runner, and The Martian.
Favorite Food: Being in Texas, I have to say BBQ. But since I work in the food manufacturing industry, I’m pretty picky because I know exactly how processed food gets made!
Day Job: I’m an hourly worker at a major food manufacturing corporation here in Texas. It keeps me grounded.
Hobbies: I’m currently learning Python and OpenAI API to mess around with automation. I also spend a lot of time researching magnetic levitation systems.
Other: The "geeky thing" my co-workers would be surprised to learn: Even though I work the line at a food plant, I am the lead author on a granted US Patent (12,037,144 B1) for a "Space Railway"—a vertical maglev system for space launch. I spend my free time trying to figure out how to get trains off the planet.
Hi everyone,I'm actually seeking your advice. I'm the author of the Original Earth series and I would be very interested to know whether you would consider the series Space Opera? Book one pretty much deals with my main protagonist surviving after a crash on a alien planet, but at the beginning it does included space travel and at the end we see the establishment of a human community. Books two and three certainly involve a lot more space travel to other planets after the main protagonist makes friends with an alien being (actually that happens in book one) and a relationship does emerge and there's a lot of politics as the human community grows and politics on an alien planet. Obviously, I feel all the novels are highly entertaining and there is a lot of action. So your views, will the novel series qualify as Space Opera?
Welcome Tim! The series sounds like our loose definition of space opera. You can post about the books in the Self-Promotion section of our discussions, and if you wish you may nominate the first one for one of our group reads.
