This line stood out for me - on being asked by the King if he would run errands for him, Roger replies: "To Rome and back, Sir, ...Or to anywhere else, except Hell". Roger goes on to explain that it is God Almighty who has drawn the line, implicitly demonstrating that he will observe God's will.
can't find the exact quote; my edition has many typos and no page numbers!, but I like his comment that history should be made up of little details like the king eating two goose eggs, since the common people don't much care about battles and intrigues! He also says more than once that the whole life of the Court, like the theatre, is a superficial show, and that Reality lies elsewhere
In Chapter 7, there is this line where Roger recounts the Chief Justice's words, which resonates with me: "He beat down the Catholics at every point. He permitted none of their witnesses to speak freely." Many Catholics are living this same scenario on a daily basis as we speak, including myself. History has a way of repeating itself over and over again. As a devout Catholic, I am often being treated as a naive person for believing in God. So goes the secular mindset of the world.
