Hey everyone! Excited to play with you all. This is only my second time playing UNO so and first time captaining for is, so please let me know if you see anything that needs doing. :)I'm out in Los Angeles, so PST. Because I work in film I also have a really random schedule and while I'll check in at least once a day the time may very drastically. I'm also a bit of an insomniac, hello AuDHD, so late night is really not that unusual (I say as I post this at almost 2am π€ͺ)
Also with GR being epicaly stupid and getting rid of DM's a know some groups are looking at moving challenges over to Discord. As I am also captaining a challenge over there and checking that regularly I've also included my Discord link in Msg 3. Feel free to friend me over there and reach out as needed.
As you check in our biggest planning piece at the moment is, as always, those cover colors. Shout out if you've got anything that will work. :)

(I'm sure I'll have more, but this was this was the first that jumped out.)
Hello, just checking in!I'm Lady Tea (and EST timezone), and it's a pleasure to meet everyone! π
In terms of reading, I don't really have social media (no Discord), but I do check my competition threads often, so I will stay in the loop!
I'm a teacher by day and a reader by night, so here's what my time usually looks like: in February, it's the start of the semester for high school where I work, so I might read a bit less just because it's so busy with school setup. In March though, we get March Break (yay!), so it should be better then. April is usually a wildcard for me (haha!), but I do try to read a strong hand, regardless! I usually struggle a bit with the colour cards, but leave a lot of options open for where my books could fit.
I look forward to reading with everyone!
Also, the tracking spreadsheet requires access--is it possible to make it open-access so that we can edit it?
Hi all! I'm Katie and will be one of the co-captains around to help Shelby. This is my second time playing UNO and also my second time as co-captain. I am a pretty solid 20-30 book a month reader. I am fresh out of another 3 month challenge that did a good job of getting me out of a major reading slump. I'm currently relying heavily on audiobooks to get me reading, but I've picked up my Kindle again recently and am so excited to get back to my old reading routines.
I am in Texas (CST timezone) and have 2 sets of twins, 12 and 14, that are super active in all the things so when I am not playing taxi and coach I try to do as little as possible. lol. I am on Goodreads multiple times a day, but I am usually not as active on weekends, especially if my kids have a meet or tournament.
I will start looking for the color cards and add books to the spreadsheet so we know where we are at there.
I can't wait to get started!

Hi checking in :) I'm Amanda (or Mandy). I live in Washington D.C. so am on EST.I'm a Mental Health Therapist and also a 4th-year Doctoral Student in Clinical Psychology. I had stopped reading for pleasure for a while throughout my studies because there was so much reading for school, but now that I'm also done with my doctorate and things are slowing down, I picked up reading, for fun, again in September of last year :)
I go to school in person, but work from home so I get on here every day. I don't have a set schedule either, as it depends on when I have classes and when I see patients, which varies day to day. I'm married but don't have any kids yet (waiting to finish school). I love doing challenges and engaging with fellow readers on here β€οΈ
I read about 8 books a month, but that number has been steadily increasing.
My discord name is Mandye.
Hello all, I'm Marie-Anne. This is my first time playing UNO (other than the actual card game with my grandson!), and I'm also co-captain for the team.I live in the Seattle area, so PST. I read paper and kindle books and am not into audio. On average, I read about 10 books/month, many different genres and NF, rarely pure horror and romance.
I'm really looking forward to this challenge, and I'm in the process of checking my "short list" against the February requirements.
Hey team! Iβm Cris and this will be my 4th Uno! Iβm in Iowa, so CST, but Iβm also a night owl and frequently finish books very lateβ¦ which is why Iβm up so late tonight, LOL! I read ten books a month, give or take. Iβm not on Discord so Iβll plan on checking in here pretty regularly.
Hi everyone! I'm Natasha. I've played UNO a few times now. I live in Minnesota with my husband, daughter, dog and chickens. I am on CST. I've had to cut back on my reading recently because I started graduate school. I work for my local library, and I will read pretty much anything (if a book is supposed to be good, I'll give it a try).
This is always the worst part of a fun challenge...the waiting. π Kinda glad I at least have NBRC's Discord Wheel going right now to keep me going.
Shelby, I was thinking that too! π Itβs fine, Iβm wrapping up a few reads. The rule is we have to start a book February 1st or later, to count, correct?
Getting close to that start date! Yay! Anybody have a good idea of what they're first book is going to be?
I'm planning on starting with:
I tend to read a few books at once. I tried to pick a variety of genres. I'm excited for Strange Houses since it seems different from what I normally read but I've heard the story is a little far-fetched.
My first two are -
I seem to struggle on the reverse books at times, so I wanted to get a head start on them. then I may go after the red card books
I'm in the middle of an audiobook, going to try to get it finished tonight. Either way hoping to start tomorrow with this one:

"I loved this one!!! It's definitely heavy on the DV descriptions, just giving you a warning, but I thought the author did a great job bringing awareness to the less talked-about parts of domestic violence.

Okay, that is good to know! I appreciate the heads up.
I just added the book Drums of Autumn to the SS - i'm still kinda figuring out the rules and everything. Does someone mind just checking it to make sure I did everything correctly and that I'm not supposed to add anything like a color or special card
Amanda - Do you have a designated Uno shelf? The shelf the link jumped to looks like it's just your read shelf and I didn't see a specific Uno shelf.
Amanda wrote: "I just added the book Drums of Autumn to the SS - i'm still kinda figuring out the rules and everything. Does someone mind just checking it to make sure I did everything correctly and that I'm not ..."Amanda - I tweaked your book listing just a little bit and added a few other places it could be used. You only need to post the cover color if it fits as clearly being mostly that cover. So in the case of your book, at least with the cover you linked to, it would qualify for blue cover. And then I filled in spots a long the line where it would match the letter for that particular number. Does that make sense?
Also just want to clarify since the book you listed is a long one, remember books couldn't be started before the 1st of Feb. It looks like you started it before the month began, but I certainly have opened a kindle book and GR would say I started it on a day even if I didn't actually start reading it until another day.
Ah, okay so here is my uno-shelf:Amanda's Uno Shelf
As for the book, I'm so sorry, I thought they just had to be finished after feb 1st. Sorry that you made those changes just for it not to work π It's still helpful for me to see what you did though as an example, so I'm gonna take a look at it then remove it!
I tend to be a learn as I play type of person, but once I get the hang of it, I'll be good lol this is my first time playing, so thank you for explaining everything!
Actually, I don't see it on the SS anymore. Was a sheet removed? I swear it looked different yesterday but maybe i'm confusing it with another challenge π
Amanda wrote: "Actually, I don't see it on the SS anymore. Was a sheet removed? I swear it looked different yesterday but maybe i'm confusing it with another challenge π"It's still there. :) Row 17. I'll leave it for you so you can check out the layout.
And thanks for the shelf link.
Great! I'll be working on an update tonight when I get home from work so we'll have a good idea how our first week is looking. :D
For the reverse, is it a book that another team member has read at any time, or only since the challenge started?
Shelby wrote: "Alright the February Mini has posted! We've got some deciding to do as a team. :D"
So, If I'm understanding the Mini correctly.... We need to choose one UNO color other than Yellow (Blue, Green, or Red) and one non-UNO color.
I feel like blue covers are easier to find, so my vote lies with Blue. For non-UNO color I'm thinking orange or brown?
However we choose, I'm fine with any of them. I do like the challenge of finding the covers so I will ultimately like anything the group decides on.
I like Blue also.I think brown/beige would be easier than orange, but either choice is OK. Might also consider grey (unless that is not considered a color :), as that would also include almost white and almost black.
Whichever colors the team chooses, I can find a few books to work with!
Let us know what you like!
So the cover is just a part of it, and we need to find different shades in text, am I understanding that correctly? So we want to make sure we choose a color with commonly referenced shades. What about purple? We would have plum, lilac, lavender, lots of options.
So for Section 2 since our Team color is Yellow we would need:4 - Shades (Amber, Apricot, Canary, Corn, Saffron, etc...)
4 - Associations (Sun, Sunflower, Banana, Corn, etc...)
1 - Cover
For Section 3 we need to choose at least one non-uno color and one other color (can be either non-uno or uno). One of them will be for 4 Shades + 1 Cover and one will be 4 Associations + 1 Cover.
So for instances we could do:
Blue
4 Shades (Indigo, Aqua, Cyan, Periwinkle, etc...)
1 Cover
Purple
4 Associations (Eggplant, Plum, Cabbage, Quartz, Lilac, etc...)
1 Cover
All of these can be found in the text/title/series title and do not have to be contextually accurate meaning they don't have to be referencing the color in that moment, the word itself is all that is needed.
@Amanda - When you get a chance, can you please add The Hobbit, or There and Back Again to your UNO shelf?
Iβm fine with whatever is decided on the mini. Just FYI, I will not be around most of the week but will definitely be reading and will update shelves and/or spreadsheet when I can!
Katie wrote: "@Amanda - When you get a chance, can you please add The Hobbit, or There and Back Again to your UNO shelf?"It says it is on there!
I also added The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo on the mini for the "3 uno colors on the cover"
For the team decision prompts, I'm also fine with anything. My next two books will be
and
if that helps at all π
Amanda wrote: "Katie wrote: "@Amanda - When you get a chance, can you please add The Hobbit, or There and Back Again to your UNO shelf?"It says it is on there!

You're right!! It is on there. I'm sorry, I could have sworn it was only showing on your Read shelf and not UNO shelf.
Maybe it was a Goodreads glitch in that moment, maybe I was a little crazy...
Alright guys we're essentially at the halfway point of the month and so far doing well. We're about 55% complete and looks like everyone has been checking in pretty regularly or posting completions to the spreadsheet. Also on the plus side we've completed all of our Cover Color cards so only need to worry about cover colors for the mini. :D
Ok so what I'm hearing for suggestions seems like everyone is good with Blue as our Uno Color. For our non-uno color I'm seeing:
Brown/Gray/Orange/Purple
Shout out your favorite choice so we can lock this color down.
Also do you want Blue for Shades or Association remembering that the other will be be our non-uno color?
