I don't find a single admirable character in this book, except the Jesuits on trial, and they are very minor characters. Oh, and maybe Roger's servant James! In particular, Roger's character gets worse as his ambition (to be a "great person") grows and he enjoys his enemies' downfall and thinks nothing of using force to get his way.
I cannot empathize with Roger. And I find his insertion in the plot, as a fictional character, unbelievable. I cannot believe that a 21-year-old boy would be sent with so important a mission by the Pope, and would become so near to the king of England.
In particular, his being sent by the king's brother to interview the king's mistress is, in my opinion, something that would never have happened in real life.
