Demon Copperhead discussion

This is a retelling of the classic David Copperfield in a modern US setting in Lee County, playing with some names but keeping the essence of the characters true to Dickens. This is a massive book and a must read! It's big - my edition 500 pages - but the pace is fast, the voice of 'Demon' is suitably childlike and 'innocent abroad' in style, like Dickens. The environment he needs to survive is brutal and harsh. The setting is Dickensian - poverty, the treatment of children, the destiny of women, greed versus kindness. The whole world of pharma drug addiction is a real eye opener and the abandonment of children in institutional care is real and ongoing. The impact is powerful and compelling reading.

I read this book for my book club a while ago. It is a great book, and it has sent me on a journey of looking for a good book that can hold a candle to this title. Great reads are hard to come by.
