J. Beauclerc | 26 comments Hello gr friends! As a struggling writer, a lesser known writer, I work hard to create characters and storylines and develop plots. So, do you think there should be a warning label attached to any books where ChatGPT was used by the publisher, editor or writer? I for one would like a level playing field and authentic novels/novellas. What do you think? (OH and none of my work has ever included ChatGPT and will never be generated by anything but my brain, but I think many publishers do permit it and some well-known writers do use it)...So, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

ReadwithA | 10 comments I came across a video on social media about how a guy (he posted the video) created a book through AI and published it which made him a lot of money. At first I thought it was a joke meant to anger people, but when I read through the comments, almost everyone was encouraging his behaviour and asking for tips. This gave me a new perspective on AI use in writing, are some people using AI to craft better books or to earn more money? Do they like writing or are they attracted by the possibilities that come with writing such as money and status?

I also think it's important to remember that AI doesn't have a brain, it can only do what it is taught. So when you use an AI bot to create a story with a specific description it will probably use inspiration from other creators. Some might use AI to correct grammar, or make the story more fluent but then you limit the work out there for editors.

I think it's hard to avoid AI, a lot of search engines include AI, but writing shouldn't be a chore. You shouldn't feel the need to use a tool to perfect your craft, it would probably end up as a bland story with little to no depth. So yes, I do think it should be known if an author used AI or not. I think it's a danger to writing in general.

Bethan (Kai Azer's Version) (manifesting my way through GCSEs) | 29 comments I believe that chat GPT can not write a good story (I have seen AI generated stories online and they have so many plot holes) but I do think it is useful to use for ideas for your story
I understand people using it for editing (especially as someone who would be TERRIFIED to give my work to an editor) but, as someone who has a few authors and editors (they are retired and don't get much money from it) in my family, I don't like the idea of ai taking jobs and I don't think it can do as good a job as humans as they just know what one person programmed them to do without the emotions and opinions that humans have meaning the book might not become as popular

That is so interesting. The thing I take from this is that someone might use AI to simply make money through books rather than being a true writer one who loves the craft. Also there does sound like the potential with AI for ideas/work to be stolen, plagiarised by AI. xo Jan

I think alot of people would agree with you about AI generating ideas. The funny thing about that, is that as a writer I have too many ideas and not enough time to write them all or develop them into novels. So maybe if a person doesn't have ideas then they should ask whether they should be writing at all? AND so good to hear that you agree that AI is not the future and could lead to talented people losing their jobs. I for one don't want to read a story generated by a machine that has been programmed to create ideas. I want imperfect work created by an imperfect person sharing their soul and thoughts with the world.

max! (doitsushine92) | 32 comments writing is art and art has a soul. chatgpt is a bot and has no soul therefore it cannot create art.

I usually use ai to help me with idea

Maxine (the_iron_maiden) | 22 comments If I ever see a book that I know was made with AI, I'm not purchasing it. I'm not reading it. I'm not talking about it on social media. I'm not supporting the author or publisher in any way.

Authors didn't need AI five years ago, and they don't need it now, idc how new and shiny it is. It adds nothing of value.

Tim Rees (timrees) | 16 comments Hi Jan. Like you, I don't use AI in any element of the writing process, but I do hear more and more that other authors are using AI for editing. I don't truly understand it because I find, during the editing process I see so many opportunities. With my latest novel I've probably redrafted seven or more times. I love the process and can't imagine why any writer would opt to skip any aspect of a novel's creation. And, yes I do place a disclaimer on the landing page of all my novels where I state that no AI has been used in the creation of the book. I think readers will be looking for that disclaimer in the near future. Of course, I can't place a disclaimer on the translated novels because I've used AI to translate.

Hello! I never considered doing that - putting a disclaimer to state that NO AI was used. That is a great idea. I shall be taking that approach in the future...I do also agree with you, the editing process is where you see changes you can make, and opportunities to make the book even better. Oh well, let's hope AI doesn't steal the creative process or dominate the world of novels going forward...Thanks for addressing the question I posed...All the best to you with your writing and creative projects! xo Jan Beauclerc

I completely agree! So great to see that readers want real stories from real people not BOTS!

Hello! I would advise you (unsolicited I know) to search your soul and mind for ideas. If you rely upon a BOT/AI they might generate rather one-dimensional ideas or ideas that have been used by other writers AND I think readers want ideas that have been generated by the writer only. Just my view. I would NEVER use AI for ideas, I have too many of my own. TRUST yourself and your own ideas NOT a machine...Hope you don't mind me saying this. Jan Beauclerc

Books should be written by people, flesh and blood not machines or computer programmes! So great to see that goodreads readers have a true love of the art of writing! xo Jan Beauclerc

J. Beauclerc | 26 comments max! wrote: "writing is art and art has a soul. chatgpt is a bot and has no soul therefore it cannot create art." Well put! Art is soul, and readers want to know what has come from the soul of the writer not a machine...Totally agree with you! xo Jan Beauclerc

Tim Rees (timrees) | 16 comments Hi guys! This made me laugh. Don't trust AI! I hope you can read it, because I know some stuff on the BBC website isn't shareable outside the UK. Anyway, quick recap, A police chief submitted an official document where he'd obviously taken a short-cut and used AI and the information provided by AI was found to be false!!

You can't make this stuff up!! :)

ིྀ𝓡𝓪𝓮[It’s my first time on Earth, too] | 33 comments Definitely I’d rather have a book not written by ai

message 19: by Sidra (new)

Sidra | 9 comments AI just CANNOT write for you. If you think that you're just gonna sit and ask it to give you all the plot, it will be utterly useless. Even when you say that you use AI for 'help', that help should not include asking it for scene ideas, since it can't put emotions in a scene as well as humans can. However, I feel that, as a new writer, one can take its help to describe settings, or search for better adjectives and synonyms.
Overall, I feel it depends on the writer's creativity; if you're creative enough with your thoughts running, you may positively use AI, without letting it affect your creativity. But, if you're completely dependent on it for 'writing', it may not go well.

yes that's what i was gonna say. even if the writing is technically good, it lacks the feeling that makes something relatable or memorable.
