Yahtzee Challenge

For those of you that aren’t familiar with the game Yahtzee, it is a dice game. The objective of the game is to score points by rolling five dice to make certain combinations. The dice can be rolled up to three times in a turn to try to make various scoring combinations and dice must remain in the box.

A game consists of thirteen rounds. After each round, the play chooses which scoring category is to be used for that round. Once a category has been used in the game, it cannot be used again. The scoring categories have varying point values, some of which are fixed values and others for which the score depends on the value of the dice. A Yahtzee is five-of-a-kind and scores 50 points, the hightest of any category. The winner is the player who scores the most points.

Since this is a reading challenge, things will be working a bit differently than the game. To begin with, no dice will be rolled. However, there will be an upper and lower section that you are reading for. The upper section will have 6 categories based on the numbers on a die. Each category will have 5 tasks.The lower section will have 7 categories and be more of a team effort. From ‘Three of a Kind’ to ‘Yahtzee!’, team members will need to work together to make sure books fit correctly.

Teamwork makes the dream work:
Work as a team? Yes! You will need to work together to figure out what prompts you are all working towards in the lower section. The reason why is because the prompts aren't that specific. It's sort of a choose your own adventure. Here are some examples that you can do for the following categories in the lower section.

Three of a Kind - Read 3 books that share one element (i.e., same setting).

You could do the following books for the element: Set in Texas

1st person reads - Atmosphere
2nd person reads - The Bodyguard
3rd person reads - From Lukov with Love

Four of a Kind - Read 4 books connect by a theme (i.e., found family).

You could do the following books for the theme: Found Family

1st person reads - Six of Crows
2nd person reads - Cinder
3rd person reads - The Raven Boys
4th person reads - The Foxhole Court

Full House - Read 3 books by the same author and 2 books by different authors in the same genre.

You could do the following books for the same author: Meghan Quinn

1st person reads - A Not So Meet Cute
2nd person reads - Till Summer Do Us Part
3rd person reads - How My Neighbor Stole Christmas

..and then the following books for same genre but different authors: Romance

4th person reads - The Love Hypothesis
5th person reads - Icebreaker

Small Straight - Read 4 books that gradually increases in page count or publication year.

You could do the following books based by page count:

1st person reads - Animal Farm, 141 pages
2nd person reads - The Diary of a Young Girl, 283 pages
3rd person reads - Mistborn: The Final Empire, 541 pages
4th person reads - The Sweet Far Thing, 819 pages

…or you could do the following books based by publication year: you can use any book edition
1st person reads - Animal Farm, pub 1945
2nd person reads - The Diary of a Young Girl, pub 1947
3rd person reads - Mistborn: The Final Empire, pub 2006
4th person reads - The Sweet Far Thing, pub 2007

Large Straight - Read 5 books in a single genre or series in order (i.e., #1-5, #1.5-5.5, #3-7, etc.).

You could do the following books based by a single genre: Middle Grade

1st person reads - Howl’s Moving Castle
2nd person reads - Wonder
3rd person reads - The Girl Who Drank the Moon
4th person reads - A Wrinkle in Time
5th person reads - Holes

..or you could do the following books based on series in order:

1st person reads - The Gilded Crown, #1 in series
2nd person reads - The Wheel of Osheim, #3 in series
3rd person reads - #Heart, #6 in series
4th person reads - A Cedar Cove Christmas, #8.5 in series
5th person reads - The Beast, #14 in series

Yahtzee! - Read 5 books that fit all one very specific prompt (i.e., books with celestial titles, books featuring libraries, books recommended by the same person, etc).

You could do the following: Books with celestial titles

1st person reads - The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress
2nd person reads - Under the Never Sky
3rd person reads - The Sun Is Also a Star
4th person reads - The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet
5th person reads - The Starless Sea

If a team completes all the tasks, they will earn 50 bonus points.

This challenge will only take place during the months of February and March. That means, books will be accepted from February 1st to March 31st. Winners will be announced on April 1st.

When signing up, please mention the number of books you plan on reading for the months of February and March. This number will be easier for me to make teams match up a bit more evenly.

For example,

Alaina - 20 bpm
Aly - 20 bpm
Jamie - 10 bpm
Jessica - 15 bpm
Melanie - 10 bpm
Anshika - 3 bpm
Saige - 8 bpm

**You will not be penalized if you go over or under your number.**

1 - 50 pages → 0.25 pts
51 - 99 pages → 0.5 pts
100 - 149 pages → 1 pt
150 - 249 pages → 2 pts
250 - 349 pages → 3 pts
350 - 449 pages → 4 pts
450 - 549 pages → 5 pts
550 - 649 pages → 6 pts
650 - 749 pages → 7 pts
750 - 849 pages → 8 pts
850 - 949 pages → 9 pts
950+ pages → 10 pts

Buddy Reads will DOUBLE your points.
BOTM will TRIPLE your points.

Bonus Points:
Every time a team completes all the tasks below, they will earn 50 bonus points.
