This area is for your team to use however you wish.

-The first team to build all 8 of their ships will win. Each team’s fleet will consist of:
🚢1 Carrier Ship - 6 Squares will be required to complete
⛴️1 Battleships - 5 Squares will be required to complete
🛳️2 Cruisers - 4 Squares will be required to complete
🛥️2 Submarines - 3 Squares will be required to complete
🚤2 Destroyers- 2 Squares will be required to complete

What do we want to build first?

Do we want to read for 3 prompts weekly? I see most of us read about an average of 3 books a week.

May as well, just need to make sure that some of the slower readers will be ready to finish 2 books that first week

The fast readers can do the optional prompts. 2 books max per prompt. The slow readers can do the mandatory prompt and they will be fine with just 1 book.

Don't we need a minimum of 6 reading for each prompt? I think we have a couple of slow readers on our team

Sorry misread the rules. It is only 6 books that we need for the extra prompt not 6 readers

Also, it’s the finish date that matters, so books can be already started when the first week begins, so probably a good week to read the most books.

Yep, definitely a good idea.

I’m trying to get my head around the rules, but it seems to me that once you have completed a ship it’s locked in and you can’t lose any of the squares, whereas if you are in the process of building the ship a square can be lost and you’ll either have to reread the square or change the direction of the ship. Does this sound correct or am I reading things wrong?

Also, do we want to select a special prompt that we can start reading in the background? It looks like those books can be finished whenever and we just claim the square once the books have all been completed.

That's what it sounds like to me, so I think if we aim for the bigger ones first it would be easier to finish the smaller ones at the end. That's what I am getting, although maybe others may see it differently.

I agree, because as the ships get built other teams are able to see them, so later in the challenge it will be easier for other teams to see where we would be building the larger ships and potentially target them in side-quests.

For the special prompts, it looks like we need at least 6 readers so these would be good ones for the slower readers to choose which they are likely to read quickly first

Going through the special prompts, I’m wondering if the following would be worth doing as it can be a relatively short book, so we could maybe claim it pretty quickly. The most difficult part will be finding a book we can all agree and get hold of.

SP 2. Group Read
Each team must choose a 150 plus page book to read. Every member must read the same book.

Some thoughts for short books >150 pages to get the discussion going. If anyone else has some ideas it would be great to get some other suggestions (if we do want to attack this SP?).

Yes, that's exactly it. It's a battle so the other teams can block us. I too have read and re-read the rules multiple times to understand.

Yes, we most definitely want to. We have some fast readers, so we can easily do two books per prompt.

Yeah, this one seems a bit tough for all to agree on the same book. We will get it done.

What about doing the first Harry Potter book as I think it would be a quick reread for most of us? I was thinking of trying the new Audible releases. None of the above ones really appeal, but I read a lot just for challenges so will struggle through if that is what everyone wants

For the Special Prompts can we add books to the spreadsheet even if the group hasn’t specifically decided to read for it?

For example, I’ve started Sunshine on the Reaping for a different challenge and it fits into the SP that says team members should read a book that they think will make them cry. When I finish that book can I just add it to the spreadsheet under that prompt since SP can be finished at any time (even though we as a team haven’t specifically decided to read for that prompt right this minute?).

I’m not particularly keen on reading sad books as a general rule, so being able to cross that SP off with a relevant book that I have to read for another challenge would be great.

Let me find out. I'm not sure if we are going by date book was finished or we are going to start all books after the 22nd.

It said we could start reading in the planning week which is this week and that the special prompt ones can be finished any time after 22nd. It is just that we can claim only one special prompt every week so we should try to get at least one finished for next week to claim it. The single prompt ones would likely be easiest. We need at least 6 readers for each of the special prompts. We only have 6 of us that have signed in.

I've actually never read the Harry Potter series 🥲 they're on my TBR for this year, though, so I'd be happy to do that as well!

I have seen all the movies multiple times, just haven't read the books lol

I typically read 1-2 (sometimes 3) books a week depending on the size

We said earlier that we were going to try for three prompts. We’ve chosen our SP, but shoul we choose our additional prompt now so we can make a start and not spend the first couple of days deciding which one to do and what books we are going to read?

I think for those who put down 1 book per week, they only need to read for the mandatory prompt that gets called on the 22nd, and the rest of us either read one or two books for the additional prompt depending on what our weekly book read number is (at least that’s my interpretation of the rules).

Since we’ve selected SP 2 to read for with the Harry Potter Book, shall we consider reading for an adjacent square? That would be either prompt 1 (every player reads a different colour cover) or 11 (no human, humanoid or body parts on the cover).

If by chance the one we choose gets called as our mandatory, we could just swap to the other one for the additional. The non-humanoid doesn’t need much planning, but the colour one does as we all have to read a different colour, so we will need to deconflict.

This is just a suggestion so if others have different ideas, happy to go with the consensus, but I thought it would be good to get ahead of the game.

That sounds great. Since the colour one is the harder one, maybe we can start choosing colours that we have planned.We just need 6 books so if a few of us read two books then we should get through it.

Yes, if the rest of the team agrees, getting the colour one out the way would be good I think. Apparently the colours Fredicka has permitted are black, white, blue, green, red, pink, yellow, orange, gray, purple, and brown.

I’ll be able to read one book for the colours and from a quick look at my bookshelf I can read for either black, gray or blue. If no one else wants black, I’m happy to lock that one in, but if someone else wants it, also happy to go with one of the others.

I'm currently reading a pink book and I will probably finish it after the 22nd, so I can claim that one :)

The Colours are regular prompt, that would be drawn and assigned to us. Do we want to start logging books?
We can pick our colors but not read it until it's drawn. Just when I think it's going to make sense, I second guess myself. Guess, it will make more sense come Monday.

So, this is my understanding of how it works - we have the mandatory prompts that are drawn (first we will get on the 22nd), but we can also pick an additional regular prompt (in this case we are picking colours) and then we can also submit a Special Prompt once everyone has completed their book for it.

So, the two regular prompts (mandatory and additional) need to be started and finished in the one week. Books for Special Prompts can be started any time (from the start of the strategy week) and finished any time.

We can only submit one completed Special Prompts each week, so if two SP were completed by our team in one week, we would have to hold off submitting one of them until a later week.

What we have decided for next week is:
*Mandatory Regular Prompt (TBA - start read from 22nd and finish within the week)
*Additional Regular Prompt (Colours - start reading from 22nd and finish within week)
*Special Prompt (Team read same book ‘Harry Potter’ - start reading anytime from now and can finish whenever, but if we want to submit it in the first week, everyone would need to finish between the 22-28th)

Actually, somebody is questioning whether the regular prompts need to be started and finished in the same week. My readout above might have been based on an incorrect response to somebody’s question, so we’ll have to see what the answer is now that the response is being challenged.

Ok, the response has been updated, and:

We can start books anytime, but for regular prompts the books must be finished in the week the prompt is called or the week we submit the additional prompt. So:

Colour books can be started now but must all be finished next week for us to use it as the additional regular prompt.

This is the update based on the latest info:
*Mandatory Regular Prompt (TBA - finish between 22-28th)
*Additional Regular Prompt (Colours - start reading anytime from now and everyone needs to finish between 22-28th)
*Special Prompt (Team read same book ‘Harry Potter’ - start reading anytime from now and can finish whenever, but if we want to submit it in the first week, everyone would need to finish between the 22-28th)

We all don't have to read for the additional prompt though. Only the more quicker readers. The mandatory regular one is the one that we must all finish the week it is called so that is the one that needs to be priotised bt slower readers.
