FYI: The protagonist in Go Ask Alice is never named. The title comes from the Jefferson Airplane song "White Rabbit."

The Alice in A Town Like Alice is the town of Alice Springs in Australia.

Will Eclipse work since one of the characters is named Alice?

My plan is Far from You by Lisa Schroeder and Fairest by Gail Carson Levine

it won't be published until january, but if i can get it at the library then, i am hoping to read Alice I Have Been A Novel by Melanie Benjamin for the first part of the task. it is about Alice Liddell Hargreaves, who was the possible/partial real-life inspiration for the Alice character in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

I found this wikipedia page that has lists of fictional countries, planets, and so on. I don't read much fantasy or science fiction so I'm having a hard time coming up with books for the second half of the challenge.

I'm #6 on the library list here. I'm hoping they get multiple copies for the different branches.

My plan is Alice in Wonderland & Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman.

Larry Niven wrote an excellent sci-fi book called Ringworld that should fit. Also several by Isaac Asimov in the Foundation series.

The Outcastby Sadie Jones has a character called Lewis.

Just to clarify...this book would work because the author is Alice Sebold, right? Patricia had listed her 'Alice' and 'Lewis' possibilities as her question after the Hunger Games query for part two of the task.

Would it be okay to read two Chronicles of Narnia books since they fit into both categories?

Would the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer work for the second part of the task? The fairies, dwarves, etc. all live in a colony underground and I think it's called "The Lower Elements".

Is that too much of a stretch? I've only read the first book in the series, so I'm not sure how much of any of others take place above and below ground.

I was just wondering - no problem if it's not allowed since I've got some other ideas for this task.

Here are a couple of 'Lewis' authors I just thought of that are at opposite ends of the spectrum:

Artemis Fowl... The majority of Book 5 (Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony) takes place in a fictional place (without saying too much about the plot). Book 4 (Artemis Fowl: The Opal Deception) MIGHT take place in a fictional fairy/etc. city deep within the earth for a good chunk of the time.... but I can't quite recall...

The other books take place on 21st century Earth (various countries), and with brief stints to the Lower Elements... but I would say the majority is spent above ground....

I highly recommend the audiobooks. They're FANTASTIC. (Well, the first 5, anyway... They changed narrators...)

I just wanted to recommend a book for this task.

Thanks Sara! I have books 2 thru 5 on my shelves right now and if #5 fits, I might use it - I was planning on reading these anyways just get them off my TBR, whether or not they fit into the challenge.

If you like fantasy The Bone Doll's Twin by Lynn Flewelling takes place in a fictional land. It was a very good book. I think I am going to read the second book for this task.

For anyone still looking for a book with "Alice" as a character, I just finished The Magicians by Lev Grossman and I would highly recommend it! One of the main characters is named Alice. :)

Would The Secret Order of the Gumm Street Girls work for the second part of the task? I just started reading it with my 10 year old daughter.

This appears to take place in a fictional city but not a fictional country so it doesn't fit.

Would the Redwall books by Brian Jacques
Count for the fictional land portion of this task?

Would The Big Over Easy work for the Fictional Land part of this challenge? I loved the Thursday Next books and have heard good things about this series.

Just to say I'm halfway through American Wife A Novel and absolutely loving it - highly recommended! (the main character is an Alice)

I am reading Kate Mosse's Labyrinth - the main character is Alice. I am only about 200 pages in, but it is really good so far. The story of a woman named Alais from the 11th century and a woman named Alice from teh 20th century and how they are linked (dont want to give spoilers , and i really havent found out for sure yet, just speculation) i would definitely recommend it.

Bridgit, you are my hero! I have Labyrinth on my shelf and it's been sitting there for months. I shall read that one with you! BTW, I *think* this book has a sequel, and if so, then the sequel is on bargain at B&N.

Another option if you guys are looking for a quick read is The Last Summer. I loved this book.
