These are 1970s classics, but Victoria Holt (one of many pseudonyms of Eleanor Alice Hibbert Burford) wrote several great romance/thrillers. Ignore the atrocious cover art: On the Night of the Seventh Moon: The Classic Novel of Romantic Suspense and The House of a Thousand Lanterns are amazing.
