Year 9 English: 25-26 discussion

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness is a very emotional novel that explores grief and truth. The story is about a young boy named Conor O’Malley, whose mother is seriously ill. One night, Conor is visited by a monster that tells him stories and demands that Conor tell "the truth". The monster seemed frightening at first, but soon it becomes clear that it represents Conor’s struggle to face his deepest fears and emotions. This book is very well written as Patrick Ness uses simple but powerful language that makes certain parts of the story feel real and intense. Overall, it is thoughtful book that leaves out a strong impression and I would recommend it to readers who enjoy reading emotional and meaningful stories. I give it a solid 8.5/10.
