Chapter 1: How it all started
I don't usually work this late, but I need the money for a field trip that I'm going on. Thankfully my boss lets me have study breaks so that I can get my homework done.
"Piper are you sure you want to work this late?"
My boss asked on his way out. I nodded my head and continued to work.
I work at a diner as a waitress, but also as a cleaner because we are low on staff. Costumers came and went throughout the night, but only one came while I was cleaning. I was in the kitchen washing dishes when my favorite song came on when the party's over by Billy Elish.
"Don't you know I'm no good for you, I've learned to lose you can't afford to."
While I was singing I was so oblivious to the world, that I didn't notice someone watching me.
"Quiet when I'm coming home and I'm on my own"
"Your voice is really beautiful"
Someone said. I spun around so fast that the dish in my hand slipped and crashed to the floor. I then bent down and started to pick up the broken pieces when I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"Sorry I didn't mean to scare you"
He said. He bent down and helped me pick up the pieces of broken plate. Because I'm so clumsy, I sliced my hand trying to pick up one of the pieces.
"oww"
I said pulling my hand back.
"Are you ok?"
He asked taking my hand.
"I'm fine"
I say trying not to let my tears show.
"No you're not you're crying."
He said helping me up.
"Let's take a look at that cut of yours shall we?"
He said smiling. He lead me over too the sink and washed my cut. Then he got the first aid kit and bandaged up my hand.

"There you go good as new."
He helped me finish cleaning and then I made him one of my famous hot chocolates.
"Thank you for everything."
I say locking the door to the diner.
"No problem. Thank you for letting me try your famous hot chocolate."
He said with a small chuckle.
"You're welcome."
I say smiling. The winter wind nipped at my exposed skin so I started to shiver.
"Are you cold?"
He asked taking off his jacket and wrapping it around my shoulders.
"Thanks."
I say. He smiles and shrugs.
"No problem."
We walked up the street and into the parking garage.
"What's your name?"
He asked.
"Piper. Your's?"
"Samuel but you can call me Sam."
He said. I smile as I get into my car.
"Well thanks for everything again."
I say. He puts his hands in his pockets and smiles.
"No problem. Thanks again for the hot chocolate."
I pull out my keys and start the engine.
"It was really nice meeting you but I have to go."
I say.
"It was really nice meeting you too Piper."
As I pull out of the garage he just stands there smiling.

The next day I wake up and get myself ready for school. When I get outside Sara is waiting for me.
"Hey."
She says smiling.
"I thought that we could walk to school since it's really nice out today."
She says.
"Sure, that would be nice"
I say putting my keys in my bookbag. When we got to school, Sara heads off to go find her boyfriend so I decide to put my stuff in my locker. When I'm done, I grab my science book and rush off to find my friends so that we can catch up. I was just about to turn the corner when I bumped into a hard chest. Thankfully he caught me before I could fall.
"Woah there, you got to be more careful."
He said. I looked up to find that Samuel was the one who caught me.
"Hey don't I know you?"
He said bending down to grab my book.
"Yeah we meet last night when you startled me."
I say dusting myself off.
"That's right, the hot chocolate girl."
I rip my book out of his hand and then turn to walk away, but he grabs my wrist before I could get too far.
"Piper, right?"
He asked.
"Yeah."
I say trying to get myself loose but his grip is too tight.
"Can I talk to you after school?"
He asked. Just before I could answer, Sara showed up behind me.
"We are late for class, sorry."
She said tugging on my arm.
"I have work but sure."
I say. Sara was already gone when I turned around.

Mr. Adams was in the middle of checking attendance when I walked into class.
"Miss Piper you're late"
He said looking up from his laptop.
"I know. It won't happen again I'm sorry."
"You're right it won't happen again because you have detention."
"But sir....."
"No buts."
He said.
"Please take your seat."
Just then Samuel opened the door.
"Sir please don't give her detention she didn't do anything wrong. I made her late because I wanted to see if I could mess with her."
"Where you able to mess with her?"
"No, because she is stronger then she looks."
"Well great story, but I'm afraid I don't have time for stories. Detention for you as well Mr. Samuel."
Samuel mouthed sorry on his way to a empty seat behind me.
When it comes to school I'm the nerd; I like to take notes and I love to study. I'm also an A+ student and I've never gotten trouble in school until now.
We sit in detention No phones, No talking, and No making noise. I was doing my homework when Samuel passed me a note. This is what it said:
Piper,
I'm sorry I got you in trouble it was
not my intention. I forgot to tell you
that my dad is you're boss. I called him
and let him know that we will both be
late. Meet me after detention and I'll
drive you to work.
Love,
Sam
I look behind me and whisper 'thank you'. He smiles and nods.
When detention is over I follow Sam out to his car and let him open the passengers side door. The entire drive neither of us say a word.

When we got there I hurried inside, grabbed my uniform and quickly ran into the ladies room to get changed. Once I came out I got to work on taking orders. That's when I spotted her, Sofia the most popular girl in school who loves to bully me; she's in my section. 'Great just great' I say to myself as I walk over to her table.
"Hi, can I take your order?"
I ask. Sara says that Sofia finds me too pretty and intimidating but I don't believe that.
"Umm.....yeah....can I get another waitress?"
She said laughing with her friends. Just then Sam showed up behind me.
"If you can't handle her then you can leave Sofia just stared at him but didn't seem to be bothered.
"And who are you?"
She asked.
"He's my son."
My boss said. The look on Sofia's face told me that she was shocked.
"Leave."
He said.
"Fine."
She said grabbing her bag.
"Thank you guys."
I said. They both smiled then Mr. Daniel (my boss) went back to his job. Sam helped me throughout my shift. Then he drove me home. When I got home I thanked Sam then hurried inside. I ran upstairs, put all my school stuff away then decided to take a shower. It was relaxing up until the point where I started to hear shouts coming from outside. I shut off the water and wrapped myself in a towel. I looked out my window to find my dad quickly driving away leaving my mom in tears. My dad never cared about my mom and me, he always left in the middle of the night probably to go to some strip club, but what do I know. The only reason my mom is still with him is because he threatened to hurt me if she left, but his threat never mattered because when my mom was at work he did hurt me. So I'm used to the pain. If I ever told anyone and my dad found out they would probably be dead.
