Hello! I'd say it's pretty different from a contemporary romance considering it's a gothic novel. It's darker and more intense than a typical romance, so don't go into it expecting a really lovey dovey story. However, it's one of my favorites for these reasons-- it's unique. It's deeply powerful, a story about a spiritual kind of love, obsession and revenge, madness and passion (there's not any spice, I meant emotional passion). The love story is a bit more twisted and complex than others. It deals a lot with themes like abuse as well, so keep that in mind. The writing syntax is also different from today's because it was written in the 1800s, but I found the style really beautiful. It's definitely worth a shot if all the above descriptions sound like a good read to you, if you're in the mood for a stormy, conflict filled story, and it's definitely one of those "must-read classics". Let me know if there's anything else you want to know about it before diving in! :)
