1. The book centers on misfits and outcasts. Name those most ostracized and the impact this ‘outsider’ mentality has on them.

2. The school where the protagonist and her brother attend is a prep high school. Without the scholarships, they would not have been able to attend. Why does this ‘grand’ plan not work out as it should have? What does this say about peoples’ “generosity?”

3. What ultimately happened to Frances’s brother?

4. Was what happened to him justified? Why, or why not?

5. How did Pettengill influence Daniel? Why did it not have the same effect on Frances?

6. What role did Andy play in the novel? As a character, was he necessary? Are there other characters that seemed expendable? Were there characters not present that should have been? Who and why?
7. Were you surprised with the progression of the story? The ending? What clues were there that satisfied the ending? That made it believable?

Tatyana Carter | 8 comments 1.the most ostracized i feel was daniel and the outsiders played a grave role in theis book, being that he was involved in the club called unity service.
2. this says that peoples generoisity sometimes get taken for weakness.
3. frances' brother Daniel committed suicide.
4. no what happen to daniel was not justified at all.
Pettengill influence daniel because he felt alone and he was kind of naive. but he didnt have the same effect on his sister beacause she was smarter and could kind feel things and see things better looking at things after the fact.
6. actually i have no clue what role andy played in this story. many of this characters are expendable and didnt really have a place or a need.
7. at the end of this book i was very suprised, Frances' suprised me but i did kind of forsee it happening. overall it was still a page turner.

Courttney Bledsoe | 7 comments 1. Daniel was the most ostracized because he was more involved in the community service projects and he wasn't involved in what most people were.

2.It doesnt work out because it wasn't the school that they were supposed to be at and it says that people can give things but they can also take them away this teaches them to not take their experiences for granted

3. Fraces committed suicide

4. Daniel needed to learn to stand on his own, what happened to him wasn't justified but his sister was more street smart while Daniel was more book smart.

5. Pettingil affected daniel in that daniel didnt want to be associated with him but frances had a need to be wanted and liked.

6. Andy played the role of the mediator alothough he didnt have a major role he was always there.

7. Frances surprised and disappointed me.

James Montogmery | 8 comments 1. The most ostracized character is Daniel because of his involvement in the community.
2. This was not the school they were supposed to attend and people's generosity should not be taken for granted.
3. He commits suicide.
4. It was not justified because Daniel never really handled responsibility well.
5. Daniel didnt want to be associated with Pettingil, while Frances did in order to feel accepted.
6. He did not have a major role, but he was viewed as the one to diffuse a situation.
7. The progression and matriculation of Frances was what suprised me by the end.

Ceteria | 4 comments 1. The book centers on misfits and outcasts. Name those most ostracized and the impact this ‘outsider’ mentality has on them.
Daniel was the most ostracized because of the role that he played in the community.
2. The school where the protagonist and her brother attend is a prep high school. Without the scholarships, they would not have been able to attend. Why does this ‘grand’ plan not work out as it should have? What does this say about peoples’ “generosity?”
This school was not the assigned school for them to attend. This says that people kindness could be taken for weakness.
3. What ultimately happened to Frances’s brother?
He ends up killing himself.
4. Was what happened to him justified? Why, or why not?
No, because Daniel lacked common sense.
5. How did Pettengill influence Daniel? Why did it not have the same effect on Frances?
Pettengill took advantage of Daniel because He knew that Daniel was a little bit more persuasive andd easier to run over rather than Francis who would have stood her ground.
6. What role did Andy play in the novel? As a character, was he necessary? Are there other characters that seemed expendable? Were there characters not present that should have been? Who and why?
Though appeare only a few times Andy played the role as a mediator.
7. Were you surprised with the progression of the story? The ending? What clues were there that satisfied the ending? That made it believable?
Yes, I was surprised with Francis’ reaction. I felt as if this story could have ended with a different twist.

Catherine Williams | 7 comments 1.I feel the most ostracized person in the book is Frances because everyone else is involved in the Unity organization. Frances is the only person they will not accept.
2. The grand plan does not work out because I dont think people are willing to give to a school that has so many problems such as Pettengill. The generosity that people share is shown previously because without the scholarships, Frances and the other students would not be able to attend.
3. Frances brother, Daniel is murdered by his girlfriend Saskia.
4. I believe the situation is not justified because he did not have to lose his life to stop the activity that was going on with Unity. I think the organization should have just been shut down.
5. I think Daniel was influenced so much because he started to hang around his girlfriend, Saskia. She proves to be trouble for him. also his friends influence him because they are involved in the same activities he is involved in. Frances keeps to herself and this is why she is not influenced so easily.
6. I believe Andy serves as a mediator to keep Frances calm when she needs to be. He will not lie to her because his learning disability keeps him from doing so. He is forced to give her opinions that are real.
7. I thought the story would have ended differently. When I discovered how and why Daniel died, I was a little shocked. I think Saskia seemed to be fishy but she was not a suspect in my mind. I thought it would have been the drug dealer. I knew from the beginning that Daniel did not commit suicide becasue Frances says herself that she recognizes no signs of turmoil or grief. His death happens to abruptly to be suicide.

message 7: by Kayla (new)

Kayla Harris | 8 comments The most ostracized character in this novel is Daniel.
2. This wasnt the school that they were suppose to go to, but it shows that some peoples kindness can be taken for a weakness.

3. Frances' brother ends up being murdered.

4. I felt as though it was not jstified because her brother seemed to be very naive when it came to certain situations. It was almost as if he lacked common sense in some areas.

5. Pettengill influenced Daniel because he was more persuasive. Frances could see through him a little better than her brother and she possessed more sense than him.

6. Andy was the mediator, however, his role was very minor in the novel so I felt that he was not necessary.

7. I was a little surprised by the ending with some of Frances' actions, but I was not that excited when I got to the end. I felt as though it could have ended a little differently.

message 8: by S.R. (new)

S.R. Toliver (sr_toliver) 1.)Daniel because he decides to be involved more in the community
2.)
3.)He was killed/murdered by his girlfriend
4.)No, he did not deserve to die in any right although he could have avoided his death
5.)He played off of Daniel's naivety. Francis just had more common sense, she wasn't going to let anyone influence her the way they had done her brother
6.)Andy was the mediator in the novel, and he didn't seem that important
7.) The progression of the novel surprised me a bit because Saskia wasn't on my hit list. But I was surprised by France's actions.
