Stephen King 2026 Read-Along discussion

Welcome back Constant Readers to a new month and a new book, or in this case, short story. We're trekking on along with BooksandLala's buzzword readathon and for March the buzzwords are "This and That or These and Those". For March we are reading the short story "All That You Love Will Be Carried Away" from Everything's Eventual.

Everything's Eventual: 14 Dark Tales is a 2002 collection of 11 short stories and 3 novellas (one of which, "The Little Sisters of Eluria", is a part of the overarching Dark Tower series).

"All That You Love Will Be Carried Away" was originally written and published in the January 29, 2001 issue of the New Yorker magazine. It follows Alfie Zimmer, a traveling salesman that is quite literally at the end of his rope and considers ending his life at a Motel 6 in Nebraska. However, an unusual hobby that he has picked up while on the road might cause him to rethink things.

This story was made into several different Dollar Baby short films. The films were made by Scott Albanese, Brian Berkowitz, Mark Montalto, Chi Laughlin & Natalie Mooallem, James Renner, Anthony Kaneaster, Seth Friedman, Robert Sterling, Hendrik Harms, Chloe Brown, João Augusto de Nardo, Bolen Miller and Maria Delaossa. Dollar Baby short films are hard to track down so unfortunately, I was unable to find any of these on any streaming sites.

While we are only reading the one short story as a group, if you feel so inclined and have yet to read the remaining stories in this collection, I highly recommend it.

My personal favorites are "Autopsy Room 4", "The Man in the Black Suit", "The Road Virus Heads North", "Lunch at the Gotham Café", "1408" (an EXCELLENT if not dated 2007 movie adaptation starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson is available to stream on Apple TV and Amazon Prime), and "Riding the Bullet".
