Wandering
Once, there was a fox. A cunning and deceiving fox, once, but that was back in time. Now his muzzle grows grey as his memories become thin, worn threads. He is trudging in the forest, every step on his already worn out paw making him wince in pain. He trudges through the forest, and as the sun begins to dip, he finds a grassy knoll to sit upon. And as the moon dips, joining the sun, he is curled up, snores escaping from his snout as he sleeps, safe.
When he awakes, he finds himself swaddled in a soft blanket and in a house full of candles. Lavender and a faint hint of vanilla make its way to his sniffing nose as he hears soft steps coming towards him. A hand reaches out to smooth his crimson fur and he almost flinches. But then, he realizes, he is safe.
‘This lady wont hurt me. She smells of sage and of herbs,” little to know that the scent is one he would grow accustomed to.
“My name is Mae.” The nice lady says, and he smiles inwardly. “And yours shall be Crest.” She smiles, the warm emotion casting views of more sunsets and of honey in his mind. Crest. Like a badge. Crest, like crescent. Like the crest Mae found him on.

“Daisy. Don’t freak out, but we have a new pet.” She watches as Daisy puts down her bag with a soft smile and creased eyes. “Is it a squirrel?” She asks, and Mae smiles. She frequently brings in squirrels to help them.
“No, something bigger. And a lot more red.” Daisy’s eyes widen as Mae leads her to the living room and her eyes catch on the majestic creature sleeping on their couch.
“Oh Mae!” She says as Daisy rushes to his side.
“Crest,” she proclaims proudly as Daisy kisses her once, just a soft brush of her lips.
“I love you.” They whisper together as the sun fades and they curl up together with a new member of their family.

Daisy was used to having new pets appear in her and Mae’s household. From countless squirrels to even a fawn, it was usual. But this fox felt… different. Safe. Not cuddly cute safe but comforting
