Henryk Mandelbaum was born in 1922 to a poor Jewish family in Olkusz - Poland. When the German Nazis forced his entire family to move the Dabrowa Gornieza ghetto, aided by local people, he went into hiding. His parents were later transferred to the ghetto in Sonowiec, and thence deported to Auschwitz, where they were murdered in the gas chamber in 1943. He was arrested by the German police in April 1944 and sent to Auschwitz on April 10. As prisoner number 181970, he was employed in crematoria and gas chambers in Auschwitz II Birkenau. In January 1945, in the vicinity of Jastrzebie Zdroj he managed to escape from the evacuation march. The only other member of his family to survive was his sister. After the war he remained in Poland and gave testimonies during the trials of Auschwitz criminals. Mandelbaum was always willing to meet visitors at the Auschwitz Memorial. He died on June 17 2008.
